Rewatched BFDIA21... the way Coiny & Pin have been misunderstanding each other all along, realized they'd strayed too far, then RAN back the other direction and crashed into each other in the middle is really making my heart ache in the best way. This is sort of a defense of Pin but it's more of a Coiny 'analysis' This is NOT a groundbreaking analysis it's just my own weepy rambling thoughts lol
Pin was relying on Coiny - both BFDI-wise AND personally - for so long, that when she was finally able to play on her own again, she was fully invested in the game. She took for granted that they were close, but wanted to treat the game as if it was her top priority. When she realized she'd hurt him Personally by the detached way she'd been playing, she rushed to apologize for failing as a friend - because Pin never failed as an ally in the practical sense. Every action she took was practical, and in BFDIA 20 she even criticized Coiny for recovering her if he wanted to win. It's common sense not to recover someone who you literally are not allowed to team with anymore and has no official obligation to be loyal to you. I point out again that when Pin left Coiny to drop off the tower (she did not toss him down herself, mind you - she just rolled away. FRIES knocked him down.) he was still attached to TWO other competitors she'd be pulling up alongside him.
On a practical level Pin did nothing wrong. On an emotional level, however,
Coiny was driven in all his actions by his personal care for Pin. And she returned them throughout the entirety of the season so far! But when push came to shove, Pin disregarded Coiny's feelings for her because she was preoccupied with the game. That was her top priority. Pin was a good ally but a bad friend.
HOWEVER. The other side of this is COINY disregarded Pin's feelings of passion for the game because of his own personal relationship with her. His desire to be there for her (and, subtly, to be seen and appreciated by her) overrode his game. When he felt like Pin wasn't paying him back properly for everything he'd done for her - when Coiny felt like his slighted feelings justified him taking revenge and trying to get Pin OUT OF THE GAME she cared so much about.... he was lowkey acting like an ex taking the keys to the other person's car. He destroyed her game - which I maintain Pin would have respected - except he took himself down, too, because it was JUST personal.
Coiny was a good friend, but a bad ally.
When they both realize that theyve disregarded each other's priorities, it's also them realizing the other person's feelings have been right there in the open all along, and they've been ignoring the very obvious disconnect between them. As SOON as this becomes clear, they both resolve to toss away their own priority and try to get back what they lost - their closest friend and special person.
The rough thing. Specifically with Coiny. is the subtext here. What Coiny realizes, while he's sitting under this tree (putting himself in time-out) is that Pin all along wanted an ally. He was putting so much of himself, personally, into his partnership with her. She's literally the only person in the game he cares about. He's been doing all this for her but - for everything post the Tennis Ball enforced WHOA-bunch dissolution - it wasn't what she asked of him. He chose to revive her because he loved her , and when he decides to apologize to her - meet her in the middle - he is resolving to let go of his personal feelings and focus on the game. He decides to apologize for being a "bad ally" because he lost the game for them on purpose because he was heartbroken. Coiny apologizing here is Coiny resolving that staying in Pin's good graces means having a professional relationship with her - an allyship, nothing less and nothing more. His apology is letting go of his friendship with her.
So when Pin expresses that she WANTS Coiny to be her friend. That she was the one who messed up, and their relationship is more important than the game...
Coiny LOCKED HIMSELF IN A TOWER FOR A MONTH when Pin let him drop. He was Hurt and also embarrassed. After months of feeling like he's the idiot, that he's probably just been convenient for Pin to win & that he's been doing ALL he's been doing for someone who doesn't gaf about him. After months of trying to come to terms with the fact that he loves someone who doesn't love him back.
This moment is his realization that she does return his feelings.
