I’ve never given much thought to how i would die, but right now, i wouldn’t really mind death taking my hand. I’m moving away from the only home i’ve known to live with Charlie in Forks, away from the sunny weather of Phoenix to a constant cover of cloud and rain. To make it worse, Ellie Williams seems to have taken an interest in me, and despite all the warnings i’ve received, i just can’t stay away from her. But the constant push and pull i’m receiving, and the mystery of her, is making me question whether she’s even human at all.

Angela replies, “Joel and Tess Miller’s foster kids,” as Jessica leans in, swinging into gossip mode. “They all moved down here from Alaska two years ago. They kinda keep to themselves.”
Jessica scoffs, “Because they’re, like, together. Like together, together. The dark haired girl, that’s Dina, and the guy with the strut, that’s Jesse.”
Dina looks to be around 18, dark hair midway down her back, but she has it tied in a ponytail. Alongside her is Jesse, same age, big and brawny with a playful glint in his eye.
“They’re a thing,” Jessica continues. “I’m not even sure that’s, like, legal.”
“Jess, they’re not actually related,” Angela defends.
“But they live together. It’s weird.”
Jessica’s voice fades into the background as I spot the last one of them to enter. Auburn hair tied back in a half-bun, freckles dusting her pale nose, muscles hiding beneath the long-sleeve flannel she’s folded to her forearms. She looks to be about 18 too, and seems inwardly turned, mysterious, but she has a boyish charm to her. She’s the most striking of them all, and I can’t seem to take my eyes off her.
Jessica turns. “That’s Ellie Williams.”
Suddenly, Ellie looks over. Her eyes meet my own, and I quickly I avert my gaze, hiding behind my curtain of hair.
“She’s totally gorgeous,” Jessica sputters. “I mean, look at her. But so aloof and kinda terrifying. Impossible to approach. And she never notices anybody.”
Across the cafeteria, Ellie smirks at something. The smile pulling at her lips makes her impossibly more beautiful.
“Anyway, don’t waste your time trying to talk to her.”
I’m pulled from my reverie as she takes a seat at the table alongside Dina and Jesse. Immediately, she begins playfully joking around and laughing with them. But her eyes wander back to mine, and I quickly avert them again.
“Wasn’t planning on it,” I finally respond.
