For example, the show *hates* defense attorneys. Even the characters we are unambiguously supposed to see as heroic and morally upstanding like Peralta or Jeffords universally treat them as slimy cartoon scumbags deliberately trying to let criminal go free and put people in danger. Even the one defense attorney the show portrays sympathetically is often used as an obstacle for the heroes to overcome so they can put the bad guy in jail, and she ends her relationship with cop main protagonist Jake because he arrested her boss that very openly talks about doing illegal drugs. In the show's eyes, anyone a cop - or at least the cops working the 99th precinct the show is about - arrest is automatically an evil criminal villain that needs to be put in jail, and the idea that genuinely might not be the case is treated like a betrayal of the concept of justice.

This kind of bleeds into another way the copaganda is visible in a really scary way: arrest quotas.

Instead of the dystopian nightmare that creates several of the fundamental institutional problems with the police as an institution that it is, the show treats the arrest quotas as morally neutral facts against policing. Captain Raymond Holt, the openly gay black man who started his career as a cop in the 70s and who's defining character arc in the story is battling discrimination from within the force, is somehow just...okay with arrest quotas conceptually.

Captain Holt is definitely autistic or at the very least neurodivergent. He experiences hyperfixations, specifically surrounding police work at a young age. Other fixations I have noticed is his love for trains (s4 ep18) and classical music which he's droned on about to the squad numerous times (off-screen implied.)

He has strict routines that he abides by and does not want disrupted (adjusting chair, moving podium, moving cheddar figure, etc.) Has the textbook "strong sense of justice" which probably accounted for his interest to police work.

Throughout the show he struggles to show emotion through his facial expressions.

He has a monotone way of speaking. His language is sharp and direct and he often struggles to lie or comfort people.

He has picky taste and doesn't like "flavorful" food (chocolate, pizza, Candy/soda, etc.) Choosing to have (what we consider) plane dishes such as his favorite plain toast, plain bagels, beans, and has even been shown to eat ice-cream when sad.

"Sure, my husband is a hot piece of ass, but he is so much more than just that. Raymond Holt is as smart as anyone in this department, but he choose to use his intelligence to make this city a better place. One day I hope to live up to the standard you set. You make me want to have a wetter brain."

But to me, Jake leaving the force was foreshadowed back in season 5. After Jake’s time in prison he realised for himself just how messed up the system was and how badly the inmates got treated. When he gets out he talks to Holt about how he doesn’t know how to do his job properly after experiencing the consequences of the people they arrest.

When Jake put his pen in Doug’s pocket to help him escape, it was probably the final straw that in his mind, that the moral thing to do wasn’t what aligned with his job. It plays a big part of why he decides to leaves the force, because he didn’t totally believe in it anymore.
