And I do love you. And you are awfully interesting. And I want to protect you from all pains and terrors.

“and at some point I thought to myself: ‘no person deserves this,’ and I realized that includes even me.”
— Unknown
“If you’re brave enough to say “goodbye” life will reward you with a new “hello”.”

promises made to the moon
there was a time when delicate fingers draped across your chest and mine were the antidote to our affliction.
"where are we getting each other's names tattooed?" "on the hollows of our necks," i’d cry,
vowing all good things would never learn the language of endings. you watched the water run over my skin as i shampooed my hair.
i let down my guard when i sang in front of you.
you told me i was the prettiest thing you’d ever seen.
and i thought it was an ode, not an omen of things to come.
it wasn’t love
when the photo frames in my room became collateral damage,
and i hung my head in my hands until i slipped into a foggy stupor, trying to understand the shape of your words. there was no space for questions in devotion.
only trembling hands holding tightly to the lullaby of forever:
a ring on my finger, a baby in my arms.
signing "i’m sorry" in rehearsed little staccatos,
you became a broken record. you aren’t my favourite song anymore. your ghost rings out in echoes now.

Albert Camus, from a letter to María Casares featured in Correspondance, 1944-1959
And maybe that's the tragedy of people like me. We keep offering water to a world that left us thirsty. We keep building homes in our chest for people who never planned to stay. And somehow, after all of it, we still leave the porch light on.

Not big on love anymore. But, Oh man, you should've seen me when I was...
