✅ What we do know

Sushila Karki was appointed interim prime minister of Nepal on September 12, 2025. AP News+2Reuters+2

Her appointment followed violent anti-corruption protests, led by Nepal’s youth (“Gen Z”), which forced the previous government under K.P. Sharma Oli to resign. Reuters+1

⚠️ What is unsure / possibly false / unverified

Claims that ChatGPT was directly consulted by protesters (or that protesters used it to pick Karki) are unverified in authoritative sources. I found articles and posts making this claim, but they appear in less substantiated news outlets or blogs, and not in primary, reliable reporting.

Major international / well-known news agencies like Reuters, AP, etc., when reporting the protests, Karki’s appointment, and the youth movement, do not mention that ChatGPT was part of the decision process. Reuters+2AP News+2

Some reports say that protesters did online votes / debates in forums, but using human deliberation, not necessarily AI tools. South China Morning Post

🔍 My assessment

It seems plausible that the idea “they used ChatGPT to pick their leader” is either:

a misinterpretation/misinformation that spread via less reliable sources

based on informal / anecdotal mentions (e.g. someone saying “we asked ChatGPT who might be good”)

or a sort of metaphorical saying — that AI tools were “consulted” in conversation, not in official political decision-making

But no solid evidence shows that the decision was formally made using ChatGPT or that the protesters formally followed an AI recommendation as binding.

What’s fueling the rumor?

A Times (UK) piece and a few blogs/social posts claim protesters “used ChatGPT” while debating candidates. These are not corroborated by Nepal’s main outlets or wire services. Treat as unverified. The Times+1

Tech/finance coverage and Indian media highlight the Discord deliberation itself (sometimes implying or embellishing with “AI”), but again, no solid proof that ChatGPT actually made the choice. The Times of India+1

What local/Nepali reporting says

The first individual outright discourages the usage of Chat GPT.

In the second, "CHAT GPT NAYA MINISTER???" translates to "CHAT GPT IS THE NEW MINISTER???". To me, their inquisitive tone and text in itself implies that they were joking since some were using Chat GPT to analyse who would be a good interim PM.

The third person, did in fact use Chat GPT, however, from the random screenshots I took based off the two live recordings of this online discussion taking in place (this and this, more determined people are more than free and encouraged to look for more), I have found no evidence of them being a participant—let alone speaker.

“Dreaming of a prosperous Nepal is a sin”

Following similar unrest in Bangladesh and Indonesia, Nepal’s youth poured into the streets on Monday, September 8, to denounce alleged government corruption and a newly imposed social media ban with peaceful protests.

As they spread across the country, the demonstrations in Kathmandu quickly turned violent, killing 22 people — most of them reportedly antigovernment protesters — and injuring hundreds.

Police used live ammunition, water cannons, and tear gas against the protestors, many still in school uniforms. The unrest prompted the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. 

By Tuesday, angry protesters disregarded a police curfew, ransacking and setting fire to Nepal’s public institutions, historic landmarks, and private businesses. Among the most notable sites destroyed was Singha Durbar, a historic 1908 palace complex that served as the administrative hub of Nepal’s government.

Beneath the flames lies a profound frustration that long predates the protests — rooted in corruption, nepotism, and a political culture many young Nepalis believe has robbed them of a future. For a generation that grew up connected to the broader world, the attempt to silence them through the digital ban only deepened their determination to be heard. Many demonstrators view this as not just a fight over social media, but also a reckoning with decades of broken promises.

Since abolishing its 239-year-old monarchy and becoming a republic in 2008, Nepal has gone through more than a dozen governments. Still, the deadly chaos of the past few days is unprecedented in recent times. As the country reckons with the aftermath of this historic moment of youth-led civil unrest, it faces a pivotal moment in its political journey.

Communications Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung's house was set on fire

Current leader of Opposition and ex PM Pushpa Kamal Dahal's house was also destroyed and set ablaze

Ullens School (elite school) was also up in flames

UML party office was vandalized and set on fire

The TIA airport was closed.

Quarters of Bhaisepati where many ministers reside was set on fire and vandalized also.

Former PM Jhalanath Khanal's house surrounded and vandalized and he has fled. His wife was set on fire.

Former PM Madav Kumar Nepal's house was surrounded and vandalized too.

Protesters entered Singha Durbar and the Parliament building and set it on fire.

PM KP Oli has resigned and is trying to flee.

Former PM Sher Bahadur Deuba and Minister of Foreign Affairs Arju Rana were beaten up.

The police officer in-charge of murders of protesters yesterday was stripped and paraded in his underwear.

Information and videos have surfaced of vigilantes patrolling the streets with firearms, while escaped criminals are moving rogue. There are increasing accounts of individuals disguising themselves as police officers to create fear and confusion among the public. Incidents of arson, looting, and harassment are escalating by the second.

It is becoming clear that what began as Gen Z's demonstrations for justice is being hijacked by opportunistic groups attempting to exploit the unrest for their own agendas.

Thus, as a result, the original cause is being overshadowed, and the nation is being dragged further into disorder.

Nepal, be on guard. In such times, trust is a life's gamble.

thousands of young people—students, many still in their school uniforms—took to the streets in peaceful protest. they demanded an end to corruption and accountability from those in power. they marched in their school uniforms, unarmed, carrying nothing but their voices and placards.

police answered with brutality. tear gas. rubber bullets. live rounds fired into unarmed crowds. at least 19 are dead. students who only stood for what is right are now gone.

The government is trying to downplay this uprising as nothing more than “anger over a social media ban.” sure, 26 platforms were blocked, but the truth is clear, this movement runs deeper. it is about corruption, repression, and abuse of power.

and now, reports say the government is preparing for an even harsher response—internet blackouts, silencing of media, and more force against demonstrators. they want to cut the world’s eyes away from what’s happening.

this is not protest control. this is inhuman. this is a massacre of voices that only wanted justice. my heart aches seeing nepalese youth, my fellow students, shot and killed for daring to demand for what’s right.

The death toll in the Gen Z protests against corruption and the government's social media ban has risen to 14 in Kathmandu, according to hospital reports on Monday.

The deceased include six at Trauma Center, three at Civil Hospital, three at Everest Hospital, one at Kathmandu Medical College (KMC), and one at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital.

The number of injured remains uncertain due to the large volume of cases. The injured comprise Gen Z protesters, security personnel, as well as journalists.

Hospitals including Civil Hospital and Trauma Center are reportedly struggling to accommodate patients and have begun referring them to other facilities.

Authorities said the identities of the deceased and many injured are yet to be confirmed.

The recent gen z protest against corruption has taken a violent turn, the police are throwing tear gas,using water cannons, shooting rubber bullets and live ammunition at the unarmed crowd. Young college students and children getting home from school have gotten hurt and even killed.

The government has issued curfews but the social media ban makes it immensely difficult for people to contact loved ones near the protests to leave the area and ask if they are safe. Areas near the hospital talking care of the wounded are being tear gassed, our flags are strewn on the ground and drenched in the blood and brains of those who fought.

Even Mount Everest cowers at the face of our "lawmakers'" hunger for power ,wealth and blood.
