“Oh, that’s cool. I graduated from UNC in May. What does your brother’s girlfriend major in, because if she is a History or a Women’s Studies major, I might know her.”

“She studied law with a minor in Women’s Studies. Do you know a Martha Lange?”

“Shit, I had a couple classes with her. It’s a small world.”

“I’m from Maryland, and though it’s south of the Mason-Dixon line, it’s not really a Southern state. However, I went to college at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and there is a Chick Fil A on campus.”

“I don’t consider Maryland a Southern State. I believe the border of Virginia is the end of the South. I love UNC! My brother’s girlfriend goes there. And Chick Fil A is the most amazing thing.”

It was only one flight, but still, I was sad that my phone screen broke. Plus, I can’t get an upgrade until September. I’m on my parents’ phone plan, and once that upgrade comes in September, I’m taking it. My sister Marnie isn’t taking it, even though she complains about her iPhone 5S and that she wants an iPhone 6 Plus. Um, Marnie, the 5S is still a good phone.

My phone is older than her’s and her upgrade comes in January 2017, when she’s 20. I told her she should have gotten the 6 Plus, but she got a 5S and is already whining about it. Oh, Marnie. Nobody at St. Mary’s College of Maryland will care if you have an iPhone 5S. 

“Are you from the South? Because pigs in a blanket and sweet tea sound familiar.”

“Yeah! Georgia. Are you?”

“Your older brother had style, then. These glasses are pretty dope.”

“Yeah. He was also one of the cool kids in school, being captain of the Men’s lacrosse team in 12th grade. Lacrosse is a big thing where I’m from.”

No, it fell out of my pocket, took a tumble down the stairs, and spiderwebbed my screen. But now I have gotten it back!

“Yes, it’s an actual thing.” 

“Well, feel free to tell me about it,” Mason replied, putting on his best flirty grin in hopes of seducing the crap out of this dude.

“So what it is actually called is the circadian rhythm. It is the behavioral, physical, and mental changes in one’s body that follow a roughly 24 hour cycle in response to lightness and darkness in your environment. In adult humans, the times you are the sleepiest are between 2 and 4 am and 1 and 3 pm. Though it depends whether you’re a “morning person” or “night person”. In most teenagers, it is delayed, which is why it’s difficult for many teenagers to fall asleep before 11 pm. If school starts at like 7:30, many of those teenagers won’t be getting enough sleep. When I was in high school, even on nights with very little or no homework, I did not fall asleep until midnight. But I had school at 7:25, so I had to wake up at 6 am, only after 6 hours of sleep. I was sleep deprived throughout high school.”  

“I’ve done that once I got home from finals when I was in college. Bad idea. Threw off my internal clock so much.”

“Internal clock? Is that an actual thing or just something people say when they go to sleep at a weird time and then, therefore, are up at a weird time.”

“Yes, it’s an actual thing.”

“I’ve always been a history buff. And when I was a freshman, I decided to take a Women’s Studies course to fulfill my social sciences requirement. Turned out, I loved the class so much, I decided to minor in it. And Women’s Studies minor pairs well with a History major, because your history books, for the most part, are written by white men. Women’s Studies, on the other hand, is an interdisciplinary field that involves history, politics, psychology, theory, literature, and sociology, all from a feminist perspective. So with my minor, I got a different perspective of history, rather from just the perspective of white men. Now, I’m not saying that white men are the enemy, but rather they are the privileged ones.” 

“Wow I can hear the passion you have for it, it’s just wow. It’s clear how much you love the subject. So do you know what you want to do with it, as in job wise?”

“I want to be a professor. Right now, I am taking a year off between undergrad and my masters’ program, because I felt burned out during my last semester of undergrad. So I decided to delay grad school, which brings me here. My question for you is how did you decide you wanted to go on this show?”
