Summary: For the few years that you'd been living in Charming, you knew far better than to ever associate with the Sons. They were dangerous and total trouble. But what are you supposed to do when Jax Teller suddenly takes an interest in you?
One-Shot Installments [Each one has it's own warnings/tags]
Five Minutes
While out with your friends at a seedy bar in Charming, you manage to catch Jax's eye–and he's quite determined just to get you to talk to him.
Get on the Bike
When something goes wrong with your car, you're left bringing it into the only auto shop around Charming–Teller-Morrow Automotive. You're surprised when you run into Jax and he still remembers you from that night at the bar a few weeks ago, but when you enthusiastically refuse his offer to give you a ride home on his bike, he finds your fear of his motorcycle incredibly amusing.
Walking into Trouble {coming soon}
The only way you'd find yourself at a Sons' party would be if you were completely out of your mind. So when your friends suggest partying at the clubhouse just this once, you're too buzzed and a little high after a bad day to argue about the idea. Which is how you find yourself directly in Jax's domain–somewhere your nervous, shy self doesn't generally belong.

However, he can’t deny his growing fondness for the single mom and toddler in apartment seventeen. (Nor his burning hatred for your baby daddy).
WARNINGS: this series includes a very chaotic reader with an even more chaotic toddler, mentions of abandonment, Jack's inability to consider anything good and worthwhile for himself, eventual smut, friends to lovers, mentions of previous abusive relationships, mentions of mental health struggles, miscommunication, age gap (reader is around 27 and Jack is in his 40's), medical inaccuracies and more.
A/N: I am very very excited to share this series and bring it to life. It started as a very random idea that quickly transpired into a huge story in my head within a matter of minutes. It does touch on some potentially triggering topics but warnings will be given in each chapter!

Author's Note I feel really emo about this ending!!! This series is how a lot of people found me so It will always be so special to me. I love this story so so much. I hope you've enjoyed it, too.
xoxo
It eats at you all day. You stay in bed thinking about it. You mope around the apartment, pretending to clean up, thinking about it. You chew your nails down to the quick trying to mull it over.
The video interview had gone really well. North & Vine had caught wind of you when the new menu launched, and all that social media buzz paid off. It made them dig into your other menus. They were impressed with your ability to bring in classic techniques with trendy desserts and modern flavors. It was just the kind of energy they wanted to bring into the restaurant.
This is what you wanted. An out. A step up. You should be excited. You should be bouncing off the walls and calling your friends with the good news.
And yet.
And you know exactly why you’re not.
Jack doesn’t know. You planned on telling him multiple times, but you haven’t seen him for longer than a few minutes. The one night you slept over his place, you were deep asleep by the time he came home. It’s hard to sit down and have a conversation in person when you know there’s a time limit. You rushing out to get to work, or him collapsing in bed when he gets home.
But this is killing you. It’s your choice, your life. You've never needed anyone else's opinion before. But you want Jack’s opinion. You need to know what he’ll say about this. It feels wrong to even consider this without talking to him first.
You go over to his place unannounced. Which isn’t uncommon. But Jack is irritatingly perceptive, and knows something is up almost immediately.
“Something is wrong,” he narrows his eyes after you greet him with a kiss.
“What?” you step back, kicking your shoes off. “I can’t kiss you now?”
“Don’t weaponize kissing,” he says, following you into the kitchen.
“You started it,” you look over your shoulder. “Do you still have that chocolate mousse I left here the other day?”
Jack is quiet for a moment.
You open the fridge to see the container gone, and laugh. “Well, at least I know it’s not going to waste.”
“You need to take a break from leaving stuff here,” Jack groans. “I’m actually starting to get fat and happy. You’ve gotta start terrorizing your own coworkers with sugar.”
“Actually,” you take a breath and step back from the fridge. “That’s what I wanted to talk about.”
Jack furrows his brows. His lips quirk. “Are you terrorizing your coworkers? I can get behind that.”
“No,” you shake your head with a smirk. “I’ve…I’ve been offered a new job.”
Jack’s face lights up. His ears even perk up. “Hey, that’s great! Which restaurant stole you away? One we’ve been to?”
“Uhm,” your gaze drops, and you stare at your toes. “It’s called North & Vine.”
Jack doesn’t respond. His face starts to fall as he tracks your movements. He can pick up your mannerisms. The way you’re dragging this out, afraid to say the important part out loud. He’s waiting for you.
“It’s in Boston,” you say, sliding your gaze up to him.
“Oh,” Jack says, processing your words.
You swallow hard, and wait, trying to read him and his reaction. It’s silent. Maybe just a minute, but it feels like longer.
“When did this happen?” Jack asks.
He doesn’t look hurt, just confused.
“Last week,” you say. “Well, the interview was yesterday. The recruiter found me last week.”
Now he looks hurt.
You close your eyes for a moment, trying to figure out how to get through this conversation.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Jack moves closer.
“I am telling you,” you say. “Now.”
Jack just looks at you, brows knitted together.
“I was waiting until the interview was over,” you sigh, “If I didn’t think it was going anywhere, there was no used in bringing it up, right?”
Jack drags a hand over his face, rubbing his eyes. He settles against the kitchen counter.
You inch closer, testing the waters, moving next to him, your shoulders brushing. He doesn’t move away.
“Boston’s far,” is all he says, looking forward.
“10 hour drive,” you nod. When Jack’s eyes snap to you, you shrug, “I looked it up.”
“Are you thinking of taking it?” his mouth is still a flat line.
“There isn’t an official offer yet. They want me to come out and stage for a few days. If you had asked me that six months ago, I would have said yes hands down,” you sigh.
“And now?”
“I’m not so sure,” you look up to Jack.
His gaze holds yours, eyebrows drawing together slightly. It’s hopeful. He drags a hand behind his neck, deep in thought.
You don't know what response you're looking for from him. Do you want him to tell you to take it? Give you the green light? Do you want him to say to turn it down?
All you know is that you want the truth, and you can always trust Jack to give that to you. You have no idea what you're going to do with it, though.
“Hey,” you bump your shoulder against his. “What is it?”
“It’s selfish,” he shakes his head.
“Tell me anyway.”
“I just found you,” he says softly. “I don’t want to let you go.”
You close your eyes and pull him down to you, kissing him gently.
“We can make it work,” Jack says softly.
Your heart melts. You look up at him, studying his gaze. “I don’t want you to have to do that,” you sigh. “You deserve someone who’s here. With you.”
Jack straightens, looking down at you. “What are you saying?”
“I’m not saying anything,” you sigh, leaning back.
“Then say something,” he says, pushing gently. “Please.”
“I don’t know what to say, Jack!” Your voice comes out louder than you mean it to. “I’ve never been in this situation before. I’ve never had someone tethering me somewhere.”
You immediately know how it sounds, and wish you could take the words back. Rewrite them into something less bitter.
“Tethering you,” Jack repeats. He takes a half step back.
“I didn’t mean that as badly as it sounds.”
“Really?” Jack says, “Because it sounds like I’m holding you here. Holding you back.”
“That’s not fair,” your eyes snap to him.
“Then say it, tell me what you mean,” Jack’s jaw flexes.
“I care about you! You idiot!” Your voice is rising now. “I care about you a lot! Which is embarrassing because I’ve only known you for like, 3 months.”
Jack doesn’t move. He doesn’t interrupt. He listens. You wish he’d say something. But you’re glad he’s willing to let you get this out. To work through it. Even if it’s messy and poorly worded.
“I don’t make connections with people like this, usually,” you wrap your hands around your stomach. “It’s always so easy for me to pack up and leave, onto the next thing. But you’re making it kind of hard.”
“Good,” Jack says, his mouth still flat.
“Good?” you repeat.
“Yeah. Good. I don’t want this to be easy for you,” he steps closer to you, almost toe to toe, chest to chest. His voice is lower, more careful. “I want it to be hard for you to pack up and leave. Because much as I want you to be happy, I selfishly want you to be happy with me.
Your bottom lip quivers before you can will it to stop.
“I want you to care about me that much. Because I care about you too much to let you go easily,” Jack’s voice is steady, but his breathing is not.
Jack’s hands twitch towards you, then still, fingers flexing like he doesn’t know how much he’s allowed to take. You notice.
“I don’t know how to stay,” you say quietly. “I don’t know how to stop looking for the next thing. I don’t know how to stop moving.”
Jack drops his forehead to yours and takes a deep breath. You tentatively reach out for his hand, grazing his knuckles. He quickly moves to lace your fingers together.
“Do you want the job in Boston?” he asks softly. “Or are you just used to moving on?”
“I-“ your voice catches in your throat. Jack squeezes your hand reassuringly. “I don’t know.”
It’s not a good answer. But it’s the truth. Before this conversation, it seemed simple. Would this job pan out? Why not take it?
Because of Jack. That’s why not. And you’ve never had a why not.
“I will support you in whatever decision you make,” Jack says, “I don't want you to stay for me, and eventually resent me- resent us- because you passed this opportunity. It has to be your choice. But just know, I want you to stay.”
Jack kisses your forehead gently, leaving his lips pressed against your skin for a moment longer. Your heart feels raw, skin prickly. You need time, space, you need to untangle the thoughts whirling around in your mind.
You step out of Jack’s grasp. Not unkindly, just enough to give you some air.
“I think I’m going to head out,” you say, moving back towards the door.
“You don’t have to-”
“I know,” you look back up to Jack. You press a kiss to his cheek. “I just need to think. I’ll call you, okay?”
Jack pulls his lips in, nodding slowly.
You slip out of his apartment just in time to hide the tears welling in your eyes.
The conversation keeps you up most of the night. You look up reviews of North & Vine (pretty stellar) and even try looking for job openings in Pittsburgh (not many).
At one point, you even draw out a list of literal pros and cons of moving to Boston.
Pros: Better pay, never lived in Boston before (adventure?), could be a better kitchen environment, better career press, lobster rolls
Cons; Never lived in Boston before, would have to start over (again), may not be a better kitchen environment, no Jack
No Jack.
That one was underlined. Twice.
There was no way you could stay together if you moved. He had already been through so much losing his wife, you weren’t going to put him through that. It wasn’t fair.
You look around your apartment. It’s been about a year of living in Pittsburgh, you’re almost coming up on resigning your lease. You would have to get rid of most of your stuff, since moving it would cost an arm and a leg.
But this apartment has Jack all over it, too. He’s laid with you on the couch, completely tangled with you while you watch a terrible, straight to video movie he claimed was a classic. You’ve cooked together in this kitchen. Jack didn’t even make a snide comment when butter leaked out of the pastry you were baking and almost set off the smoke alarm.
Is the possibility of better worth losing him? Worth losing the possibility of forever?
And you think of the alternative. You can’t stay at Brindle Bay for much longer. The writing is on the wall. Passing on this job would be easier if you didn’t already plan on leaving. This job offer came at just the right time in some ways. And has the worst timing in every other way.
The next day you wake up without an alarm. Just the sun beating against the blinds and construction coming from somewhere down the street. You groan and roll over, feeling like you've been hit in the head with a sledgehammer.
You have two missed calls and a text from Wes, and a text from Scottie.
Scottie: Dudeeeeee you're going to freak
Wes: Hey. Freezer is fucked. Need you.
You slam your phone back down, wishing you could go back to sleep and pretend that you didn't read either of those.
Eventually, after dragging yourself out of bed, staring out the window for 3 minutes, and tossing cold water in your face, you call Wes.
"We need you here, now," not even a hello, how are you.
"What happened?" you groan.
"The fridge shut off at some point last night. I put in an emergency grocery order for ingredients, but a lot of your prep is fucked.”
Your cakes. Your tart shells. Containers of buttercream. Baked crème brûlées. Just sitting in a lukewarm room for who knows how long.
"We are dangerously low on dessert numbers now," Wes continues. “And by low I mean most of it is spoiled.”
"Okay," you sigh. "I'll be there soon."
"Stop by the store on your way in," Wes says. "We need butter and eggs."
"Can't someone else stop?" you ask, reaching for your clothes. “If I need to remake these things? Send a line cook.”
"It's for your prep," Wes replies.
"And I can't get any help?"
"Just, stop on your way in. I'll see you when you get here."
The line cuts out.
You can't handle this right now. But you will. Because you always do.
It takes an unreal amount of work to get even close to the numbers you need for tonight. The entire time, you wonder what the hell you’re even doing there.
The guys help where they can, pulling cakes from ovens and lining tart shells with dough for you. But they have their own prep to do, so most of it lands on you.
You’re basically playing catch up through service. Things that would normally be done before hand, you have to do on the fly. Cutting the cakes, filling the tarts, unfolding crème brûlées.
It’s hell for everyone. But you’re the one moving slower. Since you don’t have anyone else on your team.
A small part of you knows this isn't right. With or without Boston, you can't stay here. It was good for a while. But this place isn't worth staying for.
By the time service is almost done, you're running on fumes, unable to regain control of you emotions or your hands. You’re shaking as you try to wipe down your station, exhaustion blurring your vision.
You organize your tools, packing them away in your knife roll. You don't say anything. You don't make a scene.
Scottie looks over at you and sees what you're doing. He stills.
When you make eye contact, he just nods solemnly.
"I'll see you around," you nod.
"Good luck," he says as you walk out.
Wes is in the dining room having a much needed drink. You slide into the seat next to him and sigh.
“We need to talk,” you look over at him.
“I know,” he nods.
At 2 in the morning, you're pacing back and forth in your apartment. Sleep came in fits, an hour here, thirty minutes there, and eventually you stopped trying.
You're desperate to see Jack. Desperate to talk this through, see what his reaction would be. If you made the right call.
You’re so emotionally raw. The truth is, you need him. You need his stupid voice and his level head and his way of comforting you when you think the world is ending. You can’t sleep, you feel like you’re going to die, and you need him.
You walk through the hospital doors before you can talk yourself of it. You had texted Jack that you needed to talk to him, and figured that he was working. After trying to sleep it off like an adult, waiting for a time that would be good for him, you gave up.
You tell the woman at the front desk of the waiting room that you need to see Dr. Jack Abbot.
“Who should I say is here?” she raises an eyebrow.
“Girlfriend,” you nod.
“This isn’t an office building.” She looks intrigued, but ultimately unamused. It is the middle of the night.
“I know,” you swallow.
“I’ll see if he’s available.”
The time it takes for her to page Jack leaves you to stand and think about what you’re doing. Showing up at his job in the middle of the night like a crazy person. He could be in the middle of saving someone’s life and you’re- what? Overly emotional and sleep deprived?
You’re about to tell her to call him off when the door swings open.
Jack comes through in his dark scrubs, concern etched on his face when he sees you.
“Hey,” he says, moving quickly towards you. "Everything okay?"
“I-I’m sorry,” you look around, breath catching in your throat. “I shouldn’t have come here. This is insane.”
“Hey, stop,” Jack places a gentle hand on your arm. “Come on back.”
He takes you by the elbow through the hub to a quiet room in the back of the ED. Multiple eyes snap up as you walk by. Many with confused expressions. Jack ignores them all.
But the ED is, for the most part, quiet. Not necessarily calm, but quiet.
Jack closes the door behind you. It’s an on-call room, you realize, evidenced by the unmade bed in the corner.
“What’s going on?” Jack says. He’s close, but not crowding you. He has no idea if this is going to be good news or not.
“I, uhm,” you sniffle, the tears welling in your eyes. “I quit my job today.”
Jack’s eyebrows raise. “Oh.”
“Yeah,” you say, swiping at your bottom lash line. "I can't stay there. I've been looking for a way out for a while, I think."
Jack doesn’t speak for a moment. He flexes his fingers, processing.
“So, then I guess you’ve made your decision,” Jack nods. It seems like he's already moved to the acceptance phase. He leans back against the far wall, putting more space between you.
You look up at him, your eyes glassy. “I have.”
Jack’s jaw shifts. He clears his throat. “I understand.”
“I’m staying here.”
You don't feel strong when you say it. Your heart is pounding. Risks are not hard for you. You’ve packed up your whole life multiple times, with nothing to go on but a job opportunity.
But choosing a relationship, a person, to be your home, your risk, makes you feel like you're free-falling.
Jack blinks, clearly caught off guard.
“But I thought you said-”
“I know. I did quit my job. But I also said no to the other one,” you sniffle and give a humorless laugh. “I’m unemployed now, I guess.”
“I’m confused,” Jack shakes his head.
“So am I,” you nod. You take a small step towards him. “I made a pros and cons list. There were a lot of pros to moving to Boston. But one of cons still outweighed them all.”
Jack doesn’t interrupt you. He holds your gaze, hopeful.
“I don’t want to let you go, either,” you say.
Jack swallows hard.
“I want to stay here and figure it out. I want to finally resign a lease more than once. I want to have habits and routines and be a regular at the shitty coffee shop that I only go to because my boyfriend likes the fact that he can get free refills on that fucking dirt water,” the words are tumbling out, now. Some things you didn’t even realize before saying them to Jack. “And I came here because I’ve had an awful day and I needed to see you. Because you make me feel safe."
He just stands there, absorbing your words.
“Jack, please say something,” you rock back and forth on your heels, wringing your hands nervously. “I’m kind of freaking out over here.”
“No you’re not,” he shakes his head, mouth softening into something related to a smile.
“You don’t know that,” you point.
“I do,” he says, moving closer to you.
He takes your hands, lacing your fingers together.
“There’s something else,” you say quietly, chewing on your bottom lip.
“What is it?” Jack furrows his brows. His thumb moves over your knuckles.
“I think…” you take a breath. “I think I’m falling in love with you.”
All of the muscles in Jack’s body tense, then visibly relax. His face softens. His mouth twitches.
“Which is not the same thing as saying ‘I love you,’” you add quickly.
“Of course not,” Jack smiles, leaning in closer.
“Because that would be insane and very quick in our relationship,” you’re rambling. You can feel it. You can hear it.
“Insane,” Jack repeats.
He kisses you gently, lips softly pressed against yours. Once. Twice. He squeezes your hand.
“Just so you know,” he whispers. “I love you.”
You let out a breath and look up at him, eyes still glassy. But in a different way. Still emotionally charged, but no longer sad.
“That’s sooo embarrassing for you,” you tease.
“Shut up,” he wraps an arm around your waist and pulls you in for a deep, real kiss.
And while you’re still terrified- terrified of not knowing if this will all be worth it, if this love will last, of being completely jobless for the moment- you aren’t worried. You would rather live an uncertain life with Jack than without him, and you would make that decision over and over again.
-
Being awake before 7 am is reserved for two things- first picks at the farmer’s market, and greeting Jack when he comes home from the hospital. Today, it’s both. You sit in the apartment, shoes on, waiting for the familiar click of the front door.
You reserved Jack’s breakfast on a plate set to the side, and fully intend on watching him eat before you leave. He has a tendency to crash immediately, and not eat a real meal for almost 24 hours. The amount of times you’ve had to convince your doctor boyfriend that a pb&j and protein bar are not sufficient calories is concerning.
You hear it. The lock turning, and Jack slips in, immediately dropping his bag to the ground. You hear the familiar thump.
When he rounds the corner into the kitchen, he gives a sleepy smile and presses a kiss to the top of your head.
“You’re up early,” he says.
“Market day,” you reply. “I need to get the rhubarb before the snobby coffee shops can get to it.”
His eyes fall on the plated breakfast, and a smile tugs at the corner of his mouth. “For me?”
“Of course,” you smile, pushing the plate closer. “Roasted red pepper, sausage, and cheese omelet with chives and ricotta.”
The sounds Jack lets out as he drops his weight into the dining chair is borderline obscene.
“Have I said I love you lately?” he says, grabbing the fork.
“You have,” you lean forward, resting your hand in your chin.
“Well, I do. I love you,” he takes a bite of the omelet and melts. “I love you even more, if that was possible.”
You let out a soft laugh and rise to your feet. “I love you, too.”
“I’m going to head out, you get some sleep,” you press a kiss to Jack’s cheek. He turns his head and pulls you back in for a real kiss.
“After I finish this, I’m dead to the world,” he says, shoveling the eggs in his mouth.
“I’ll be back later for prep,” you say, grabbing your bag. “Robby’s coming too, right?”
“Yes,” Jack nods. “I reminded him before I left. He said he wouldn’t miss it for the world.”
“That’s sweet,” you smile. “I’m going to pick up regular groceries, too, we’re out of milk.”
“Would you get out of here?” Jack smiles. “You’re going to miss the rhubarb.”
Your pop-up series has been extremely popular. It started about a month after you left Brindle Bay. After being out of the kitchen for so long, you had become antsy, coming up with new recipe ideas and desperate to try them out.
Your experimenting made you very popular with Jack’s coworkers, since you were constantly sending him in with something new. Shen gave you extremely detailed feedback. Dana started sending handwritten thank you notes back with Jack. They welcomed you into their little family. It felt good to have people.
The pop-ups were actually Jack’s idea first. You were looking at jobs, and he made a passing comment that with the amount of baking you were doing at home, you could probably just keep making money doing that.
It’s not steady income, so you’ve been taking pastry and cake orders in between. It’s enough to keep you busy, and your bills paid. Which has been less stressful since you moved in with Jack.
Tonight is a very important pop-up. Today marks three years since you went out on your own. Three years since you decided to bet on yourself.
It wasn’t always completely smooth sailing. There were many moments where you cried on the floor over a failed batch of macarons or improperly proofed dough. And every time, Jack was there to scoop you up, calm you down, and run to the store for more ingredients. You couldn’t have done it without him.
Three years of Jack. Three years of slow dancing in the kitchen and holding him through occasional nightmares. Three years of staying. And you don’t regret anything.
You leave the apartment with your market list in hand, mentally running through everything that’s going to happen tonight. You have everything planned to the minute.
Except for the one part you can’t plan for.
The part where, when the pop up is over, and you’ve completely sold out, and you’re enjoying a glass of celebratory wine with Jack and Robby and Val and your closest friends, Jack clears his throat. The part where he gets down on one shaky knee (his good knee) and asks you to spend forever with him. The part where you break out into tears, barely able to even get the word out before you’re dragging Jack back up to his feet, peppering his face with kisses.
The part where you still don’t know what’s next. But you know where home is.

JACK ABBOT
I Hate You, Jack Abbot
Pairing: Dr. Jack Abbot x Reader
Reader: She/her pronouns, no fixed face claim
Genre: Second-wife angst, grief, stepmother angst, emotional neglect, marriage tension
Summary: Jack Abbot thought he was ready to remarry. You were steady with his son from his first marriage, patient with his grief, and gentle with the parts of his life he still could not touch. But being loved by Jack does not mean being chosen by him. It means living in his first wife’s shadow, loving a child who is afraid to need you, and slowly realizing that sometimes love is not enough when it arrives at the wrong time.

Genre: Celebrity AU, established marriage, talk-show interview, domestic fluff, humour, family life
Summary: After winning an Emmy for your performance as Nurse Clara Bennett on PTMC, you sit down on The Graham Norton Show with Lewis Hamilton, Zendaya, and Pedro Pascal. Warnings: Fluff, humour, established relationship, married couple teasing, children mentioned, veteran themes, prosthetic leg mentioned, charity work for veterans and their families, mild swearing, medical discussion, Jack being quietly supportive, reader being lovingly roasted.

The team finds out you are married. Then they find out you have kids. Somehow, that is the bigger shock.

Then Brendon Park starts noticing you in ways you do not know how to survive. He notices the worn shoes, the skipped meals, the careful silences, and the way you make yourself small before anyone can ask you to.
