Don’t get me wrong, Hallmark Christmas movies have a lot of problems – they’re heavily pro-Christian, almost entirely white and heterosexual, and glorify a vision of rural life deeply at odds with its reality. They are often poorly written.

But every year they get mercilessly, endlessly mocked for being movies about women who reject corporate culture, become small business owners, and meet nice men who respect their boundaries and wishes.

Ok, I see y'all getting wild over Elliot Page coming out, and I think we should keep in mind that there's a lot we don't know. I have checked Elliot's Twitter and his wife's Twitter, and I have also read several news articles on this subject, and as far as I can tell, we still don't know:

Elliot's specific gender identity. We don't know whether he identifies as a trans man, nonbinary, both, or neither. He could also be agender, genderfluid, genderqueer, bigender, or some combination of these. If it's important to him, I'm sure he'll share that information publicly at some point in the future.

How Elliot labels his sexuality. In his post, he self-identitied as queer. Many people do use queer as their primary identifying label, and that's incredibly valid (I also do this). That said, he might also identify as gay, or he might still identify as a lesbian (YES, he/they lesbians exist, die mad about it). Maybe he's bi, or possibly even straight (straight trans people also exist, so yes you can be straight while also being queer). Again, if it's important to him, I'm sure he will share that information publicly in the future.

How Elliot wants people to use his pronouns. Some people who have multiple pronouns want other people to switch between them. Others are fine with other people picking one and sticking with it. It's a personal preference. As Elliot has not announced which of these approaches he prefers, please stop yelling at people about it. Once more, if it's important to him, I'm sure he will share that information publicly in the future.

Basically, all we know is that his name is Elliot, he uses he/they pronouns, and he's queer and trans. He might choose to provide additional information at a later time, but he might also choose to keep that information private, and he has EVERY RIGHT TO DO THAT. We are not entitled to this information. LGBTQ+ people do not owe you every intimate detail of our identities. Please, PLEASE do not demand this information from him. Newly out trans people need room to breathe as much as they need support, and Elliot's wife has specifically asked that we respect their privacy at this time. It's fine to be happy about this news and to celebrate Elliot, but let's avoid overwhelming him with questions or jumping down each others' throats due to assumptions.
