are you still into 三國演義 and 2. if yes where do you do your sanguo posting... and 3. did you finish reading it? 4. spare thoughts on diao chan and/or lü bu?
(p.s. i adore your chinese calligraphy and art. i used to do it when i was a kid but stopped when i was 14 due to school taking over and i miss it...should take it up again)
hell yeah, thank you for the kind words! i've never stopped San Guo posting! i post most of my Romance of the Three Kingdoms content on my side blog @grand-theft-carbohydrates, for other chinese history stuff, I also work as the social media intern for the first emperor of china, Qin Shi Huang @qin-shi-huang-di
now as for my thoughts on everyone's favourite Problematic Himbo, and Girlboss of the Century. i have many.
i fucking LOVED the 1994 tv show's musical send off to diao chan, i think it does a fantastic job of acknowledging the tragedy inherent of a Honourable and Self-Sacrifising Female Character who's only purpose in life is to be a plot device. in the original ming dynasty novel, she is trapped in the archetype of the Virtuous Girl, who bravely sacrifises herself for the country, and is unceremoniously ushered off-stage after she had served her narrative purpose, never to be seen again. the tv show dedicates this incredibly heartbreaking song to her, describing the sacrifice of a young girl whose life had effectively ended before she had a chance to live it, and i think it's power lies in the fact it doesn't try to pave over any of the blind spots or misogyny.
I LOVE this musical video of Lu Bu, because it completely reshaped my perception of him. i originally considered lu bu to be an entertaining dimwit, all brawn and no brains, who was much too one-dimensional for me to be really emotionally attached to. this music video really brought out the tragedy of his character by reframing him as a chess piece (a knight specifically), marching towards his demise, slowly running out of good moves, to be used by more intelligent players but ultimately unable to function on his own. his astounding agility and power (ability to leap over other pieces) is ultimately just an illusion that grants him no real freedom, he can't leap off his chessboard any more than he can change his reckless nature. i think in this way, he and diao chan have a lot in common.
BONUS:
whoops, forgot the answer question #3. i haven't technically finished reading san guo all the way thru, but between podcasts, wikipedia, and the tv show, i feel pretty confident with discussing the plot post-liu bei's death in broad strokes. (oops spoiler: they all die).

my flipflops are rapidly becoming unusable. and there’s a whole bunch of dry grass near my house. what i’m asking is does anyone have a good straw sandals tutorial they could point me to
ok i've found two videos which can be combined. the modern method uses rope, and once you've got that down, you can just sub in the straw.
Here's an example of the straw sandals i've made. This pair is hemp rope, its pretty soft and comfortable. I've also made a pair using sessile rope and they are SUPER prickly and can't be worn without socks. so if you're buying rope to use as ties, i recommend hemp.
video 1: rope tutorial
video 2: straw tutorial
Here is an example of traditional methods made using rice/wheat straw. main takeaway is they beat the straw with a giant mallet first to soften the fibres so the stalks can bend when you weave it. I've also seen another video where they soak the straw in water first (then beat it) and weave it wet. i reckon you can just put the straw down and stomp on it for a bit, or pick it up and wack it against a surface like they do with flax.
i've never seen this done with normal grass, so let me know how it turns out! and remember, if two stout, heroic men ask to be your sworn brothers, say yes!

so a few days ago I accidentally spilled some hot chocolate on my copy of Durrant’s the cloudy mirror, (which critically evaluates the strengths and biases of the historian Sima Qian) and i was in the uni gym for 1 hour painstakingly drying the pages with a hairdryer
today: i thought it would be funny to officially make an offering of some hot chocy to the Grandaddy of East Asian History himself, Sima Qian.
I brought a bar of whittaker’s just for this lol. no expenses spared.
Sima Qian’s Special Hot Chocy has 3 squares of dark chocolate, 1 tsp of sesame paste, 1 tsp of decaf coffee, a pinch of cinnamon, 2 marshmallows, a wafer stick and 1 cup or hot milk. now, i cant be sure that i am the first person in history to offer Sima Qian a cup of hot chocy, but i can be sure that this cup is the most unique, delicious and decadent!
Sima Qian was not present in person so I drank it on his behalf
Almost forgot, underneath it are a pile of history books from the zhou-han dynasties, the majority of which would not have been written had not been for the works of Sima Qian + “sexual life in ancient china” by RHV Gulik for laughs.
some context for the non-history fans: sima qian was castrated by emperor han wudi for daring to speak up for a college accused of treason. instead of choosing to die by suicide, as was expected of a member of the gentry, he chose to live on in ignominy, and finish the historical chronicles started by his father, creating one of the most important and comprehensive works in chinese history

Hi! I'm absolutely enchanted by your Sima Qian hot chocolate and am going to try to make some— what kind of sesame paste did you use in yours?
thank you! I was going to use peanut butter for it, but I ran out, so I used sesame paste instead, and it turned out really good! any type of asian sesame paste will work. you just need to make sure you melt the chocolate and sesame togather, and add in one tablespoon of milk at a time, to make sure there's no "curds" of chocolate. the finished product should be SUPER thick and smooth.

the people have spoken and i have listened! a second shelf has been created!
and thank you to everyone who gave me advice, i have decided not to use a racking for this one, bc my project is very small and i will only be putting light objects on it, but i will keep that in mind if i ever make a bigger bookshelf!
pretty proud of how shelf #2 turned out. it only took TWO HOURS to make! #myspeed #myimprovement
you have activated my woodworker trap card and I have two very important points:
If you still have all your fingers, you are not bad at diy woodworking! this is why I love this hobby. still got all your bits? not needing medical attention? whatever the wood looks like, you are winning! Pat yourself on the back!
point two if you want shelf #2 to Not Do That Shit and also you should do this for shelf #1 because with time It Will Do That Shit Too because of how wood behaves and misbehaves (technical term is racking--you know how a shitty bookcase ends up sorta...diagonal and turns into a folding bookcase over time? it happens bc of an interaction between the screws and the fibers of the wood--when you screw into the end of a board, it pushes the fibers apart! and since the screw is parallel with the fibers, this is easy to do so over time it pushes them more and more apart. which makes the screwed object kind of. not screwed. over the next few years or months or whatever, depending). The way you stop it is put a piece of wood that fits tightly between the upright supports on the bottom of the horizontal piece of wood. You can glue it or screw it or both--it can be fairly small, and you can use whatever you have lying around. Basically, it braces the shelf from the inside, and inhibits the side-to-side motion that allows it to wiggle and allows the screws to make their holes bigger and thus wiggle more. You can also just put a sheet of wood as backing--that's why Ikea bookshelves have the thin backing that you attach with eleventy billion nails and at least one bashed thumb, to keep them from misbehaving.
I hope this is useful--alas I rehomed all the shelves I built when we moved cross country but I might be able to find pics if you need illustration. Woodworking in the "I need furniture and I'mma build it now" mode is one of my favorite things in the world because it lets you be a feral gremlin re materials and I love me a hobby with a low bar for success (ie keep ur bits attached).
I think that would work! I was thinking something less prominent, like this…
Here’s what I did with a bunch of floor to ceiling shelves I made for our old house. It’s just a bit of scrap (old ikea bed bits actually) turned vertically and fitted under the second from top shelves. Featuring photobombing cats and two dogshit tables I built.
Here’s the bed! It actually folds but that doesn’t make it easy to move. This was my third iteration of the design; the first two were fulls, this one is a king. It does not wiggle or creak but it has been mistaken for being an addition to the house because I overbuilt it like woah. Also featuring photobombing cat.
Bed being assembled! No cats in this one, though.
Also fucking up the measurements is the most time honored tradition of carpentry. I’veseen professionals fuck up their measurements like once a week. If you look at the last picture, in the middle of the bed on the left side, there’s a section of lighter wood on the side of the bed under that big wide board? Yeah I was 4 inches short, and had to stuff an extra section in there to make sure the mattress could fit. Much swearing. But eh, didn’t lose a finger, it’s all good. As the guys I’ve been shadowing this summer say, “A little putty, a little paint, makes a carpenter what they ain’t” (someone who measures correctly lol).
