"you said you wanted to tell me something, why are we just sitting here in silence?"
Trafalgar Law furrowed his brows not understanding what exactly he was waiting for. Luffy stared off at the horizon with a smile that differed from his usual bright childlike ones. This one conveyed a sense of peace and longing. Suddenly his eyes brightened up as he pointed forward
law turned his gaze to where the boy was pointing but got a bit blinded by the sudden bright glare of light that emerged from the horizon.
"thats right, when we were younger my brothers and i would sit on the edge of a cliff and watch the sun rise and set over the sea"
law turned his head abruptly towards luffy. He thought Ace was his only brother so why would he say brothers? Theres more? he wanted to ask but he noticed that same lax smile on luffy's face again and decided that it was best not to interrupt him. He'll ask about it another time.
"during those times we would talk about our dreams and promise each other that we would achieve them no matter what. So even when we were apart from one another we would all move forward knowing that the others were also doing their best. And somehow, even though ive been sailing without them, when i sit here and watch the sun it makes me calm, as if ive got them by my side again"
Luffy went quiet and kept looking at the sun as it slowly rolled out from the horizon. Law simply stared at the boy as the dawning light shone over his face. When suddenly, out of thin air, he saw it. Standing behind luffy as plain as day, it was fire fist Ace. Law jumped back in a panic, nearly slipping off the edge of sunny's head in the process. Luffy turned to him, startled by his shout. Law regained composure and looked over luffy's shoulder again and saw that Ace was in fact there, chuckling slightly at his excessive reaction.
"no way, behind you, its-"
he mumbled in disbelief but stopped when he saw ace put his index finger against his lips, telling him to keep quiet. At that moment, Law took notice of the slight translucency of his body, the rays of sunlight seemingly passing right through him.
"huh? behind me? i dont see anything"
Luffy curiously looked around everywhere and even looked directly where Ace was standing yet he seemed to go completely unnoticed.
"I uh- yeah sorry, must have been a bird or something"
"ha? you got scared of a bird? youre pretty weird"
Law fixed his hat and sat up straight again, cautiously looking up at Ace who was smiling fondly. He put up his hands and started gesturing and mouthing something to him but he couldnt really understand since no sound actually came from his mouth. Was he trying to say something?
he watched his lips as he mouthed the words and pressed his hands together in a praying fashion.
"take good care of my little brother for me"
he pointed down at luffy who had been babbling to himself the entire time while law was too focused on the image before him to pay any attention to him. Ace began dissolving like a cloud of smoke and as he completely disappeared a small breeze ruffled luffy's hat, making it fall on his back.
law finally snapped out of his trance and looked down at luffy.
"huh? how am i like the sun?"
luffy turned to him with his signature big smile on his face.
"being around you calms me and makes me feel like im not alone"
he looked so childishly giddy despite saying such serious things. Law was taken aback by those words but only sighed in response before reaching out to ruffle the boys hair.
"dont be stupid, youre never alone. youve got all your friends by your side"
Luffy's laugh resonated in his heart and he couldnt help but smile too. He looked off at the horizon, his smile not leaving his face.
"Its nothing, lets go back, the cook said breakfast will be ready soon"
