Thirty minutes left…

Approximately. If your estimates were correct, Jeno, Renjun, Jaemin, and Donghyuck would be arriving in thirty minutes, but only if they had left on time, which would’ve been a miracle in itself.

Your phone chimes next to you, as if to ease your worries, notifications popping up on the screen.

Jaemin: we’re about thirty minutes away… you better start getting ready!

Hyuck: if Jeno talks about how much he misses you and how he cant wait to see you ONE MORE TIME I WILL KICK HIS HEAD THROUGH THE WINDOW IDC IF HES DRIVING

Your lips twitch into a smile at Hyuck’s ridiculous (yet typical) message and Jaemin’s reminder. You missed your friends. No one tells you how empty a table feels without the presence of four boys, even if their seats are filled with other familiar faces. However out of the four of them, you missed Jeno the most. It may be cliche, but Jeno was the classic best-friend-turned-boyfriend character that people gushed over.

There was never a certain beginning to your friendship; Jeno was always there. He was the boy you grew up with, inseparable: you couldn’t have one without the other. You slowly fell in love with him, year by year, not realizing it until your first dance during freshman year, where he asked you to dance “as friends” and you started to wish that it could be “something more”. The boy, who you didn’t think reciprocated your feelings because you never asked, too scared to ruin years of friendship, until he nervously asked you out to prom two years ago, dropping the “as friends” with a sheepish smile on his face and a blush dusting his cheeks.

So…

Jaemin’s text may have reminded you of the surprise you had planned for Jeno. One that probably should involve you not leaving things for the last minute, even if one of the few steps is just picking a movie out on Netflix.

After all, you still needed time to buy snacks.

Ten minutes left…

You’re on Jeno’s front porch, familiar and welcoming as ever, with snacks stuffed into a bag that’s slung over your shoulder. You knock on the door and are welcomed by a woman with a smile just as sweet as Jeno’s.

“You can go wait in his room, he said he’ll be arriving soon,” she tells you, a knowing smile on her face as she heads towards the kitchen to grab you a glass of water.

“You don’t mind if we watch a movie upstairs?” you ask, fingers fidgeting with the strap of the bag.

“Not at all! Jeno’s your best friend, not to mention your boyfriend, so you two probably want to spend some time together face to face,” she responds, and you are relieved, even though you’ve known Jeno for almost as long as you’ve been alive and have spent just as much time in his house as your own.

“Don’t tell him I’m here, I want to surprise him,” you say, as you open the door to Jeno’s room.

Jeno’s room is uncharacteristically clean: the bed made, clothes put away nicely in drawers or hung up in the closet. Nothing seems out of place and everything seems too clean, but that’s what happens when the main occupant leaves for college. The other three occupants are curled up in their beds, content and happy. You try to be as quiet as possible, but you don’t know if it was the crinkling of the bags or just your general presence that woke them up. Bongshik, Jeno’s oldest cat, is the first to approach you, probably with the intent of receiving treats, which you are all too willing to give.

Fifteen minutes after…

When Jeno arrives fifteen minutes later than expected, his hair a mess and wearing those half-frame glasses that you think are adorable, he finds you curled up on his bed, playing with his cats. He’s out of breath, clearly having run to his house, with a bouquet of flowers in one hand and some of your favorite chocolate in another.

“If I didn’t know better, I would think you were only dating me for my cats.”

You nearly bolt upright and run to him, but you don’t, because there is a cat in your lap, purring happily, and you don’t think Seol would like the sudden movement.

“That’s where you’re wrong. I only became friends with you because of the cats, dating you was an unexpected benefit.”

“We both know that’s a lie.” He runs a hand through his hair, smirk on his lips.

“Just come here,” you say, motioning towards him, impatient for the hugs he had promised earlier. Seol has long since abandoned your lap, and is now lying down on the other side of the bed, still sleepy as ever.

“Fine,” he sighs, his arms wrapping around your waist, and you place your head on his shoulder, feeling each breath he takes as he pulls you closer.

“Your hair is so messy,” you murmur, as your fingers attempt to comb through the soft strands.

“But you love it like this,” he responds, smiling, eyes turning into crescent moons, and he quickly leans in to press a kiss to your lips.

“Anyways,” you start, pulling away, “care to explain why you were so late?”

“I was going to surprise you but you weren’t home, so I texted Jaemin and he said you would be here.”

You feign an expression of shock, clutching your chest. “Jaemin? Before me? I’m hurt!” you pause, “though that does explain the flowers and the chocolate.” Laughing, you lean back in for another kiss, only for Jeno to pull away, sneezing violently.

You manage to make out a few words amongst the sneezes: something along the lines of “forgotten allergy medicine”.

“You know, sometimes I have to ask myself why I’m dating an idiot,” you sigh, sinking back down into soft sheets.

time to write the most cliche rich kid falls for the poor kid au,,,,,,

donghyuck,,,,,to put it super simply,,,,,,,is filthy filthy rich

his parents own a billion dollar company and practically everyone else’s families work for them in one way or another

the school you both go to named a wing of the library after donghyuck’s family 

and rumor has it the cuff links on his uniform are made of 24k gold

where ever he goes, people follow him around in this circle of other rich snobs and girls desperately feigning for his attention

donghyuck is always in the center

barely paying attention to whats being said, instead he’s either fixated on scrolling through his phone 

or every now and then lifting his eyes to track down some unfortunate poor student and just smirk

you,,,,,,,have been the target of that smirk on many occassions

your family isn’t even close to rich

you got into this elite stupid school on a soccer scolarship

and instead of gold cufflinks and prada backpacks

you’ve been sporting your older siblings rucksack and grass stains on your button down from practice

you’re what some of the other rich kids call a ‘rugged pleb’ 

not only do you not have the same allowance as them, you don’t have the time or money to put into your looks 

so hand-me-down clothing and your soccer uniform are all that you’ve got

and to be honest you don’t,,,,,,,hate donghyuck or his money,,,,,,,

you hate the fact that all his stupid friends look down on you - even though you worked twice as hard to get what just seems to fall into their lap

donghyuck doesn’t bully or do anything directly toward you

but like you’d mentioned - those smirks

his eyes that peel away from the screen of his phone and meet with yours

the corner of his mouth lifting up almost teasingly, showing off his perfectly white teeth 

ugh it drives you insane

why does it seem like recently he’s only been doing it to you too?!?!!?

as much as you try not to dwell on it - it’s hard because as the months lead up to the end of the term

which lead to the end of the term dance

the entire school is buzzing about donghyuck’s after party

“i heard his house has THREE pools!!!! who needs THREE pools????”

jisung exclaims, sitting down your desk and throwing his backpack down by your feet

you rest your cheek against your hand and shrug “i guess donghyuck needs three pools.”

“who cares about the pools, i heard that he’s getting catering from that super expensive resturant thats owned by that super popular idol,,,,,,to be honest im going just for that.”

chenle says with a shrug of his shoulders and you all turn to look at him

“you got invited to the party?!?!”

chenle pulls out his phone and shows you a text from an unknown number

“everyone did, check your phones.”

and although you’d fought long and hard with yourself about going to this party

the evening after the dance

you found yourself infront of donghyuck’s house

gigantic, almost like a castle more than a house

and completely swarmed with people 

you think,,,,,,maybe you’ll just turn on your heel and make a run for it 

but chenle is already parading inside and jisung and jeno waste no time pushing you toward it as well

parties are for one not your thing - you like the get together the soccer team has when you win but that’s just pizza on the school roof

girls twirl past you - their long, expensive and pretty dresses from the dance brush against every side

and the boys follow after them, holding bottles of something you’re sure they’re not allowed to have

you feel trapped but your friends seem to be laughing and enjoying themselves

so you don’t want to ruin that

instead you look down at your own outfit, frowning to yourself because it’s definitely nothing to brag about 

and too tight and fancy for your liking anyway

you wish you’d just stayed back at the school - ran up to your locker and changed into your comfy soccer unifo-

“oh, you made it.”

your thoughts are sidetracked by a voice all too oddly famaliar

you turn, seeing donghyuck standing behind you

he still has on the suit you saw him wearing at the dance, but the jackets been abandoned somewhere and it’s just him in the slacks and a dress shirt you’re sure costs the mortgage of your parents house

he adjusts a watch on his hand when you don’t respond and then rolls his shoulders back

“don’t think i came here of my own will.”

you snip, usually you don’t engage with donghyuck like this but right now you’re not in a mood

you’re sure he’s come over to either make fun of you or kick you out

so you don’t think there’s any reason to be nice

but then you notice that donghyuck has kind of frozen

he’s staring at you,,,,,well more like he’s staring at what you’re wearing and the more he doesn’t answer

the more you feel increasingly embarrassed

“yo-you know i cant afford anything expensive. stop looking at me like im wearing some kind of potato sa-”

“you look different. you look,,,,,,gorgeous.”

“oh so you think - wait what?”

your words sizzle out to a shocked silence ,,,,,,,,,, you try to make sure you heard right

he said gorgeous? right? no,,,maybe he said grotesque? what?

donghyuck reaches out and touches the side of your face but you jump back

“i always knew you were more than that dirty uniform”

“HEY it’s not dirty, and of course im more than my uniform i dont just always play soccer - poor people dont just do one thing-”

donghyuck brushes his fingertips back across your cheek and once again your words die on the tip of your tongue

what he’s doing,,, why’s he acting all mesmerized by you all of a sudden

and why isn’t he doing that stupid smirk of his?

donghyuck lets his other hand come out and he tugs you forward toward him

the house is packed so his little entourage is probably somewhere in the mess

but in the moment it’s just you and him

and donghyuck doesnt even seem like his usual nose-in-the-air-rich-kid self

he seems ,,,,,,, softer

and before you know it he’s leading you through the house and out into the backyard

past the groups of laughing teenagers and making out couples until you two are alone 

and donghyuck turns back to you - taking your face in his hands 

“are you going to kiss -”

you try to ask, frantic but it’s too late because donghyuck does kiss you

and it 

it isn’t the worst thing in the world

and when he pulls back you’re staring at him, slightly dazed but even more so confused

“finally, i got to do that.”

“yo-you’ve wanted to kiss me?”

“of course, i thought i was making it obvious with all the stares i was giving you.”

you blink, “wait wait you mean the smirks!?! i thought you were making fun of me - like judging me for you know -”

you motion to yourself and donghyuck tilts his head

“judging you? i mean why would i do that if i like you?”

you feel like your mouth has gone dry and all the wires in donghyuck’s brain must have gotten fried

because rich kids don’t usually fall for poor kids

but donghyuck leans in to kiss you again

and you’re kissing him back 

because poor kids aren’t supposed to fall for rich kids either 

in which you work at the local library for the summer and kihyun wants to join the summer reading program,,,,,,,,,,,,

people like to tease you for volunteering at the library over your summer break because haha don’t you have enough of books and stuff during the school year?!?!

and you’re just like no,,,,,actually,,,,,i dont,,,,,i love reading as a hobby,,,,,

and they’re like LOL nerd and you’re like and what about it because tbh there’s nothing wrong with liking books

you acutally wish more people your age would be just as devoted to them

because nowadays the library is just full to the brim with senior citizens and parents trying desperately to distract their little with some sort of comic or fiction series about magical talking dogs

but no one of your age

yeah their are audiobooks and online apps you can read on for free

but ,,,,,, there’s something about actual books that just beats all of that

then again,,,maybe you just have a taste for the nostalgic 

the only other person your age who comes to the library is a tall, gangly looking student named hyungwon

and when you two talk - it’s mostly to debate which authors are better 

(you’ve been having a three month long feud about classic literature that has yet to be settled)

so it’s to your shock one afternoon when hyungwon comes in - making his usual beeline to the classics section

but behind him is a friend

a shorter,,,,but in your opinion very VERY cute friend

who looks around once, spots you, and breaks out into a big grin

“AH! hyungwon told me about you!”

he exclaims and an old lady shushes him almost immedatly 

lowering his voice, he gives a tiny bow as an apology before turning his attention back to you

“im kihyun! hyungwon and i take classes together, but i usually use the campus library. it’s closed for renovations so he told me i should come here - i heard you guys have a summer reading program!”

you’re shocked by the mere ability of kihyun to say all of that without a pause to breath

but you’re also trying to hold back laughter because -

“th-the summer reading program is for middle schoolers!”

kihyun’s eyes widden almost comically, and he whips his head around to glare hyungwon’s way

but ,,,,,, hyungwon is nowhere to be seen

(you’re sure he’s just hidden himself in a shelf somewhere - but thats besides the point)

with a dramatic turn kihyun is back to looking at you again

“really???? there’s nothing for college students??? nothing for adults???”

with a solemn shake you explain, “adults don’t really like being told what to read”

“i like being told what to read”

kihyun crosses his arms and for a moment he looks like a grumpy middle schooler which might have annoyed you - but on him,,,the look fits

you sigh, “well - the most i can do for you is maybe give you some of my recommendations. but believe me they aren’t that g-”

the sparkle of life returns to kihyun’s eyes

and he reaches out to take your hands in his almost causing you to startle backwards

“really!?!? that’d be great!! hyungwon only ever recommends books about existential dread or whatever - im sure you know of something exciting i could read!”

this time you do chuckle, and then promptly bow to all the old people who turn to shush you 

“to be honest maybe you’d enjoy the middle school reading program, a lot of the books are adventure series!”

kihyun scrunches up his face, “don’t make fun of meeeee - i cant be mad if the librarian is so cute,,”

this makes you almost blush and you gently tug your hands out of kihyuns

“well, i can make you a list - just tell me what genres you like”

you try to steer the conversation away, but kihyun is seemingly hellbent on being close to you

his head peeks over your shoulder when you try to pick a book from off the shelf

and you nearly fall over again as he wraps a hand around your waist to make sure you don’t teeter over

kihyun finally sort of narrows the list down (he talks about a lot of different things but you settle on some sci-fi and some historic stuff)

hyungwon appears after god knows how much time, once again claiming that he could give better recs than you

but kihyun just snorts and tells hyungwon all he’s good for is using his limbs to get things down

“not my fault your short”

hyungwon says as he strolls out of the library

kihyun seems to want to get another jab in, but instead turns to you

“ill come pick up the books tomorrow then?”

you nod, telling him your shifts going to start at 12 so then would be a good time to drop by

but just as you’re about to say goodbye 

kihyun gives a little smile and goes

“you,,,,,when does your shift end tomorrow?”

“im just a volunteer so around 4, why?”

kihyun gets a little shifty eyed but then all of a sudden he’s shining like a christmas tree light

“then,,,,,ill pick up my books but ill also pick you up for a ,,,,,,,,,, a date! a date after your shift - ok? ok! well i have to go catch hyungwon before he gets lost - see you tomorrow!”

and in a blink of an eye kihyun is out the door, supposedly chasing to keep up with hyungwon

and you’re like 

wait

did i just get asked out?????

There were many things your grandmother had told you that you lived by. She was the woman who’d raised you. She brought you back to earth when you thought you were at the sky and picked you up when you fell—the grainy dirt in her fingernails the proof.

She had a unique way of looking at the world and you found life went smoother when you followed the wise woman’s advice.

For one: you’ll find friends in the oddest places.

It was a clear day out when she told you—ironic that her advice would come to play years later. And in the rain.

When she first gave you that advice, she was busy in her garden when you’d stumbled through the front gate, your eyes drenched.

[first] open windows showing the most beautiful city you’ve ever been : venice. italian soft breeze making the white curtains dance and these curtains belonged to a secret room where love named itself “the protector of a sacred passion”. it was 10 a.m, you were not a morning person and neither was he, so you both decided not to leave the comfortable bed, the same bed where earlier, you took the time and the innocent pleasure to explore each other’s body between gentle kisses and chuckles. the caring sun, through its honey-colored rays, ticked your skin, while sweet air was rocking both of you, in a slow lullaby. nature was there to take care of ten and you. everything was calm, serene. until mischievous ten woke up.

alright so junhui

when he moved to seoul from china he needed a job that required little to no conversation with people since he was still learning the language

so he ended up finding a job as a car washer!!!

it was more labor intensive than what he preferred but it was something he could do

not to mention it was a great arm workout

so anyways, junhui would be THAT person out in the sun, wearing sleeveless white tanks, have his hair messily slicked back, while rocking a pair of aviators

we all know what happens to white clothes when it gets wet! it becomes see through

so needless to say, junhui brought in a lot of business LMAo

people would be driving down the street and then when they see him holding and waving around a sign for a car wash with a little smirk on his face, they are intrigued

like why is this model guy out here??? washing cars and not walking down a runway???

junhui would ALSO be that guy that when he reaches over the windshield, he flexes

he knows the people inside are watching and probably drooling

so he just has that knowing smirk on his face

people would give him quite the generous tips, in which he responds with genuine smiles

who would’ve known that a job as a car washer could pay so well! only if you’re junhui

so anyways

you too were looking for a part time job

and after countless applications to restaurants, stores, basically anywhere

the only place that called back was for a car washing job!!!

you were honestly very tempted to turn it down, considering you applied not even thinking they would get to you

but luck works out in mysterious ways!!!

so you say screw it and go for it

and you got it!!!!! much to your despair!!!!!!

let’s just say you are not much of an outdoorsy person, you prefer to be in a nice air conditioned room rather than outside in the smoldering heat

but a job is a job, and you needed money

plus this was one of few jobs that would take tips so!!! extra $$$

so on your first day, dread filling your system, you walk up to the little kiosk that is your new workplace

where you are greeted by none other than the man!!! wen junhui!!!

and you were kinda starstruck for a moment because w o w he is a beautiful man

but then he kinda just gave you a small smirk and nod before he was off

snapping back to reality

you go in and greet your boss, who was expecting you

“y/n you’re here!!! oh, did you see junhui on his way out?? that’s going to be your new coworker!” he spoke enthusiastically to you

so now you had a name to the cute face

but then you realized he said coworker and you almost flipped

that means…you would be seeing that model man for the entirety of your career there

maybe it wasn’t that bad of a job after all heheh

so yeah your boss talks you through the basics

often referring to junhui as he was in the middle of washing a car right now

basically you were going to be his assistant lmao

so without further ado, you start working!

you and junhui developed a system where you would soak the lower parts of the car that you could reach, while junhui would take on the higher parts to flex

and by the time you were done with your first car, you were ready to take a break

but of course!!! another car pulls in

and you just have a done look on your face and you hear junhui chuckle a bit at you before nodding his head towards the car, a sign of him telling you to join him

so you do

and this is how the rest of your first day goes

you and junhui actually didn’t share any words at all, you thought he couldn’t talk until you heard him thank the customers that would come out to give him a tip

but you heard the little bit of an accent in his voice so you pieced all the puzzle pieces together

he was a foreigner unfamiliar with the language, not an unsocial butterfly!!

so the next day, you gathered up your courage to finally introduce yourself to him!!

“i’m y/n, by the way”

“oh ok”

and that was IT

literally you cringing internally at that conversation

but you convinced yourself he would eventually open up to you!!!

The moment Guy Gisbourne stepped into the kingdom, Mark had him arrested. His eyes screamed murder, but you knew Mark. With the prince’s attention diverted, you decided it was the perfect night to rob a caravan of cargo. Dressed in your typical Robin Hood gear, you set out. Equipped with the freshly drawn trade routes, you slipped away. With an uneasy feeling, you snuck your way closer. Unguarded.

This was going to be a piece of cake. You dropped from the tree branch where you were perched to the tail end of the caravan. Cutting a small hole at the top, you slipped inside.

It was times such as these that you regretted your actions, but even then, you would’ve done it again if you had the chance. “You have people at your beck and call. You get to relax by a warm hearth at the end of the day. The silence between you—the thief, and him—the soon-to-be King was pregnant. He was struggling to find his words, and you had already spent yours.

“They deserve better, that I know,” his voice was hoarse, and when you met his eyes you noticed the glassy quality.

“But you’d know that, wouldn’t you…Y/N?” he whispered, your breath catching as he muttered your name. He walked up to your shackled frame, his fingers ghosting over your hood and mask until he pulled them off—the bars constricting his movements. Your eyes met his in a clash of colors and emotions.

You looked down at your hands, “How’d you know?”

“You were my best friend.”

“Cut the hogwash,” you sighed, rubbing your thumb against your palm.

“You’re the only one who could’ve possibly known the trade routes, aside from me. I set up a trap route, and placed it on my desk…I tried denying it—I didn’t want to believe it. But then you spoke to me the other day—I’m not a fool. I know what you look like, I know your voice. I know you. Or… I thought I did.”

Silent tears were streaming down your face, Mark was crying too. Dignity aside, he didn’t bother hiding it. Hiccupping loudly, his hands raking through his hair as tears fell freely from his eyes.

“I didn’t say anything, because, I understood it. I was happy for you,” His voice cracked, forcibly you shut your eyes. Seeing him so hurt and betrayed—you couldn’t bare it, the knowledge that you had done this to him.

“I never meant to hurt you,” you cried out, unable to mask your own tears.

“My brother was starving, and I couldn’t barely afford to get food for him. The village kids were all so sickly and hopeless, I couldn’t stand there and do nothing!” You voice was rich with despair.

An air of deep sorrow and morose settled over you both.

“I meant what I said, Y/N. I will make this better.” Mark finally said, leaving you to brew in your own sadness. You missed the shadow of a smile beginning on his lips.

Jeno was your next visitor. In his arm, he carried a bundle of silks, hanging off his index finger was a set of keys.

He unlocked the bars, ushering you out of the dungeon.

“Nope, I have orders,” He winked—tugging you down an eerily familiar hallway. A knot of dread settled in your stomach—this was the way to the throne room.

“Sorry Y/N,” he muttered before throwing you over his shoulder in one swift movement. You felt an urge to yell out in protest, but considering you were technically wanted, you decided against it.

Unceremoniously, you were dropped in a heap at the base of the throne. You shot a glare at the boy who had broken you out of jail, but he payed you no mind. Instead he retreated back to the doors of the room, hastily shutting them.

Rubbing your knee, you looked around you. Your eyes met shined leather shoes, tracing upwards. Your jaw dropped.

Sitting in the throne was Mark, and he was smirking at your shocked expression.

“Welcome to the free world again, Y/N,”

You scrambled to your feet, “What the heck is this?” you demanded, he couldn’t break you out of jail like that and not have consequences from his board of advisors.

“No one knows that Robin Hood was captured—only Jeno and me.” He began, standing up to walk to his window that overlooked the kingdom. You watched, your stomach in your throat. You knew it, you were about to be banished. Oddly enough, that would be easier than having to stay.

“Robin Hood can stay a fugitive, as long as you don’t,” He sighed, turning towards you, his words throwing you a curveball. He wanted you to stay.

“I promised you. I promised that I’d make this better,” He took your hand in his, his index finger lightly tracing at the raw skin around your wrist. He used his other hand to lift your chin, making you meet his intense stare.

“…but I can’t do it alone Y/N. You always said you’d be there for me, and I’m going to need your support for this. I will make this better, but I want your help.” He paused to take a ragged breath.

“I’m not asking you to marry me, because I know that’s overstepping, all things considered.” He let out a quiet laugh.
