Yeah, anti-piracy never makes sense, but I have seen some of those people condemn libraries and secondhand bookstores. There was a discourse on Japanese Twitter a while ago where somebody said they didn’t want to know, and that writers shouldn’t be told that their readers read their books from libraries because it would hurt their feelings. And that tweet has hundreds of thousands of likes. Well, Japan is an outlier but you know what I meant.

Not much has changed for Ezidis ever since the start of the genocide at the hands of ISIS that will have it’s 4th anniversary in August of this year (2018). While over 3000 women and children still remain in captivity, thousands of other Ezidis are displaced, either living in refugee camps or returning to destroyed villages with no sufficient infrastructure anymore. There is an immense lack of basic needs such as medical care, food, shelter and education for children.

A lot of abducted women are reported to have been further sold into sex slavery into other countries and many of the kidnapped children have been sold to Muslim families. Those who were kidnapped at a young age do not remember their roots, their culture and their religion anymore. Cases in which children have been reunited with their real families show they need to be reintegrated into their communities again which proves to be difficult as many have forgotten their mother tongue. The liberated Ezidi woman and children are still in need of psychological help for the mental and physical abuse they received at the hands of ISIS during their captivity. Unfortunately to this day the world barely knows about them or their situation so efforts to improve their circumstances are only going very slowly.

It breaks my heart how over 7 years (2021) after the Ezidi community was uprooted in the most violent way in their homeland, every word above still stands as their reality. Still almost 3000 women and children are in captivity. In spring of this year a seven year old Ezidi girl was saved from human trafficking in Turkey. She was an infant when she was kidnapped by ISIS members and ever since sold several times. Her fate is that of thousands of Ezidi children and women whose whereabouts are unknown to this day. Whatever efforts are made to find them, are coming from within their community, despite the promises and obligations of the international community to support the survivors. Ezidis are rotting away in IDP camps in Iraq which lack most basic sanitary facilities. Lack of water, electricity, most basic education. Fires in the summers and not adequate shelter in the winters. There is a whole lost generation of Ezidi children and adults all the same who experience extrem mental health issues because of the trauma ISIS genocide inflicted on them. There has not been a single month this year without reports of suicide cases in IDP camps. Please consider supporting these amazing organizations that have been on the ground since day one, assisting the survivors: Khalsa Aid, Yazda, Nadias Initiative and Free Yezidi Foundation.

In your experience whats the book that has had the best portrayal of poverty that you've read?

Hmm, the first story about poverty that made me cry was The Pearl by John Steinbeck. We studied that at school lol.

As an adult, I remember reading Laskar Pelangi by Andrea Hirata, which describes rural poverty in Indonesia very well, and despite being Malaysian, I found it relatable. But I'd say the best works I have read that speak about poverty very well are the short stories of Lu Xun, Saadat Hasan Manto, and Premchand.

My recommendations for fiction about poverty are going to be Sula which I was very surprised to see because it captured a kind of poverty i only ever saw/experienced in rural africa and didnt believe americans had any understanding of. And then the What It Means When a Man Falls From the Sky which has a couple of stories that do a good portrayal of how you desperately keep on selling parts of you to make ends meet when you're poor.

In non fiction i don't think i've read much about poverty that felt memorable to me. Though also some academic work can be very sterile in a way that makes it easy to forget we're dealing with real people. Though i should read more and less by americans and academics™

Honestly, I'm glad they want to suspend military assistance. One of my biggest criticisms of the Malaysian government has been its continued military cooperation with the US, including allowing our armed forces to train together and hosting military arms exhibitions in Kuala Lumpur while the genocide is ongoing.

On the topic of piracy ...

Some people do not realise that us people in the Global South (even if we have the money to pay for things) have no avenue available for us to pay for them.

Just month ago my sister found an author offering their entire book series for the price of one book ... she couldn't buy them because the online payment system doesn't work in the we live in.

Also ... in my home country (I am not currently live there) Amazon is not available, no streaming service work and no global book or movie distribution company delivers to us ...

So they want us to sit and never consume any form of media!! ... how dare they call us entitled ... if thay want us to pay for them make them fucking available.

I wish y'all approached this from a "this is cultural genocide and a nazi's 'burn the books' wet dream" perspective rather than simply "this is theft."

When the Aqsa Flood Battle started in Oct 7, 2023, the first thing Palestinian cultural centers around the world did was digitalize books, movies, and music to preserve their heritage from being permanently annihilated, and they did so and made it accessible to all FOR FREE.

What is happening right now with purchased media is NOT distant from that mass action. It's retaliation and a challenge we can only overcome with piracy, printing, AND sharing (!!!).

Whether your sales figures adequately compensate you is a matter for you and your publisher to resolve. That is the agreement you voluntarily entered into. The rest of the world is under no obligation to pay you perpetual "rent" simply because your work continues to exist. Your dispute over compensation belongs at the negotiating table with your publisher, not at the feet of readers especially those who have neither the means nor the contractual obligation to pay you.

If you're self-publishing, your inability to make money from your work is entirely due to your inability to market yourself as a writer. It is not the fault of people who don't have the money to support you.

Piracy has nothing to do with your lack of sales. If your writing is good enough, people will find a way to support you, one way or another.

Also self published books that arent selling are very difficult to pirate and almost never pirated bc there is no demand for it and no seeders and no archives for it.

This is an entirely ficticious hypothetical. Like if nobody is spending money to buy your book at all how is it going to be found in any archive for piracy? If nobody wants to read your book for free who is going to pay for it?
