Started showing my wife Orphan Black last night and god. Maybe it's because I watched in high school but I really did not appreciate enough the fact that Sarah Manning is a Protagonist Of All Time right out of the gate. Amoral ruthlessly resourceful grifter. Absent mom. Willing to chug soap and make herself throw up to maintain a con. Saw a woman identical to her jump in front of a train and leapt straight to identity theft and faking her own death with zero hesitation. Like yeah I'm probably a clone being hunted by a shadowy organization but I got a scam to run so I don't have time for that. Absolutely no notes complete banger of a character.
god I hate antis.
maybe you don't deserve fandom content or community, maybe you deserve corporate slop and the burning itch to see something made by passionate artists instead of carefully curated marketing decisions made in a boardroom, but no means by which to scratch it.
for eternity.
people complaining about ao3 site “not looking aesthetically pretty” is so funny to me because it’s super clear these people are used to wattpad and other social media platforms where you can have aesthetic layouts, but what they fail to understand is that ao3 is an archive. it’s a library with the purpose of keeping/storing/archiving fanworks. it’s not a social media.
also, you can technically make your ao3 page look aesthetically pretty by applying your own customized skin/layouts on your own ao3 page. according to people who use their own customized skins, it’s easy once you learn how to do it (I personally don’t know how to do it because I’m not interested in learning or applying any fancy skin, and I just use dark mode there) it may not be as easy as decorating twitter or wattpad layout, but that’s because the purpose of ao3 is to archive fanworks, not to be a place for users to show their aesthetic layouts.
once again, ao3 is a non-profit organization, an anti-censorship archive/library that welcomes all kinds of fanfics/fanworks. it doesn’t prioritize “looking aesthetically pretty” because looking aesthetically pretty like a social media platform has never been relevant to its purpose.
here’s the list of things you need to know if you’re new to ao3
Please return us to a world where Notp and squick are used for a ship you don’t like instead of just making up a load of bullshit about how immoral it is or w/e lol
a short selection of concepts and phrases that used to be commonplace in fandom and we’d really benefit from making that a thing again:
NOTP: the opposite of an OTP (One True Pairing). It is a ship a fan strongly dislikes. The word is a portmanteau of ‘no’ and ‘OTP’ and thus is not a contraction of any particular phrase.
Squick: anything that is a deep-seated, visceral turn-off. Squicks may be shared by many fans or be specific to one; one person’s kink may be another person’s squick.
YKINMKATO, or kink-tomato: Your Kink Is Not My Kink, And That’s Okay: used to indicate support for fannish diversity and to distinguish between disapproval or kink shaming and simply having different taste.
DLDR: Don’t Like, Don’t Read: a phrase used to warn against complaints about an aspect of fic or meta. A “live and let live” philosophy of fandom, which places the responsability for avoiding content one doesn’t want to see on the side of the fanwork consumer, rather that on the creator’s.
SALS: Ship And Let Ship: similar to the above specifically about shipping tastes.
YMMV: Your Mileage May Vary: a phrase used to acknowledge that any given individual’s personal opinion on the topic at hand may differ due to their own tastes, standards, values, experiences, etc.
As the OP points out, all of these crucially imply no moral judgment of what they’re designing.
(definitions lifted more or less wholesale from fanlore’s relevant pages)
bring the healthy fun back to fandom!

sorry, prev, your tags are too true to be silenced
the one addition that truly makes this clip even more powerful is knowing that Mr Sterling is this guy:
I am in awe trying to imagine the sheer levels of non sequiturs they would be able to produce together.
New reaction meme just dropped
I know we talk a lot about the literacy crisis and the horrible anti-intellectualism happening rn but I think we need to talk more about how much of an entitlement complex the stupidest among us have developed
I was sitting with an opened dictionary and a notebook to write down words, just to get through the first chapter of gideon the ninth (im bilingual) and I loved every second of it, these people have no curiosity left in them and the mental stagnation is going to make their life miserable.
YOU! RANDOM CITIZEN!

What was the last fresh fruit you ate?
I've always written everything by hand before typing. Staring at a blank word document doesn't inspire the words to come.
But a blank paper and a blue pen and the words come at a steady pace.
As traditional handwriting is progressively being replaced by digital devices, it is essential to investigate the implications for the human
aaaand here's a link to the paper :)
There's a pretty damning commentary on this paper: https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/psychology/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2024.1517235/full
In short:
they didn't actually measure changes in learning; they measured theta waves which don't have a clear link to learning
They evaluated adults, not children
They didn't have participants do any encoding activities; they were mindlessly typing the same thing over and over
They didn't allow participants to actually type; they had them 'type' with one finger of their right hand, when there's plenty of evidence that using both hands while encoding information leads to increased brain activity.
They couldn't see what they were typing (no visual feedback), so any error-correction processes the brain would usually run were impaired
The handwriting part of the experiment was completely normal and representative of using handwriting to record information.
They didn't actually report the raw data or conduct any statistical analysis for the two parts of the experiment individually; only the differences between the two groups.
Honestly, that is....shockingly bad. Like I'm surprised this passed peer review and it makes me wonder about the journal. Of course educational science is a joke of a field anyway with little scientific rigour over the last 50 years, so maybe that's not surprising. But this sure as hell sounds like this researcher walked into this project already convinced that handwriting is better for children's learning than typing and screens, and then rigged an experiment to support that bias. If I were the editor I would retract the paper, not just include a link to the commentary.
they had them 'type' with one finger of their right hand
The incandescent WHAT?! that boiled out of my mouth had my spouse worried I was reading some world-ending news.
I mean, look, I love the idea of "writing by hand helps with learning" because it sounds good. There's a feel good to it I can appreciate, and as someone who was worked for hours upon hours to have beautiful penmanship, I was ready to accept this.
But I've also written two books by hand, and I've written several books via typing, and there's no difference cognitively speaking. If anything, typing is more efficient, easier to edit, and less stress on my fingers because I would often write pages and pages within a day until half my left hand was bruised.
This is just one of those posts I'm glad I went all the way through, because my initial knee-jerk reaction was "huh, neat." followed by "I don't know if this tracks..." and then ending with "Oooooooh, okay. That makes sense" when I got down to the last bit about how it was basically the writing version of the vaccines cause autism paper. (i.e. the author had an end result they wanted, and made everything fit that).
And hey, writing by hand is both fun and valid, and rock on if that's how you do it, but don't let some slipshod paper powered by what feels like a very snobbish "pens and penmanship are superior" dupe you into thinking you're making cute little brain pathways vs your drooling typist peers.

I feel like in the past ten years, boycotting has stopped being a tool for forcing action on specific policies and become a form of harassment and monastic self-denial. Less “I will not be giving my money to you until you improve these specific conditions” and more “don’t touch the contaminated thing, lest you also become contaminated.”
Its become a moral purity thing. If you purchase from a company doing something bad, you are deemed complicit in the bad thing because you spent $5 on shampoo.
Boycotting is not about keeping yourself morally squeaky clean. it's about forcing companies into stopping and changing bad behavior, with the power of multiple people's dollar.
Also, boycotts should have a specific and feasible demand. I will not buy from this company until their workers' union has a new contract. Or until they stop buying materials from a specific place where there's tons of exploitation going on.
Part of the point of a boycott is that the company in question should see their sales bounce back if/when they comply with the demands of the boycott, because if they lose you as customers permanently they lose all incentive to listen to you in the future.
write it out in spanish if that's the filmmaker's vision! some lines should be translated and some should be transcribed. 0 should be waved away.
for real though, if you don't translate it, you should transcribe the original language. if a bilingual viewer can understand what they're saying just from listening, then a bilingual viewer who relies on subtitles should also be able to understand those lines.
I can't think of a single food that is not improved by mustard
I swear you have a deficiency in something.
i dont care how corny iris by the goo goo dolls is bc i love iris by the goo goo dolls and i will continue screaming iris by the goo goo dolls from the top of my lungs every time i hear iris by the goo goo dolls for the rest of my miserable life
and I
DON’T WANT
THE WORLD
to see me
Cuz I DON’T THINK that THEY’D UNDERSTAND
Sometimes my husband will put this video on just to feel something. You are not immune to Goo Goo Dolls - Iris (Live in Buffalo, NY 7/4/2004) [Official Video] and neither am I
I HIGHLY recommend the Song Exploder episode about “Iris” because clearly John Rzeznik feels the same way about that song and he wrote it.

Seeing people I know and like using AI is making me understand the protagonists of those old time sci fi dystopia's.
"Oh I don't normally use AI, I just wanted it to plan my trip"
You lived on this planet for decades, you know what you like, there are hundreds of websites where you can type into any search engine " things to do in [area]" and have at least a hundred different options.
"Oh I only use it so I can figure out what to make during the week with what I have"
The most popular website as you type in "recipes" into google have sections where you click dinner- quick and easy and those usually rely on staples + 1 or 2 items. I found 30 recipes on chicken alone.
"I had a writing idea, so I typed a few sentences into Chat GPT and I was able to write 20 pages with it."
