PERSONALITY
Isabel is enigmatic, her personality fills any room she walks into and she’s rather hard to avoid. She’s also reckless, she doesn’t think through her decisions, instead she follows her heart and lands where it leads. She’s been loud and brash her whole life, it started as way of self protection, then it turned into who she was. Growing up in a boys world Isabel was constantly having to prove herself. She is the dictionary definition of an extrovert and can find a connection with any stranger. She won’t hold back with the truth though, it just depends how she shares it. If she likes you you’ll get it kindly, if she’s less of a fan it’ll come with a lot less tact.
She is a people person and absolutely loves to be surrounded by others, that’s her happy place. She’s a social creature and so working in a bar is the perfect job. Isabel grew up with one dream and now that’s gone she’s not entirely sure what she wants to do next but what she does know is that she’s good with people, so she sticks to that. Sometimes doubt creeps in and Isabel worries that she's not really headed anywhere but quickly her enthusiasm for life takes over and she's back enjoying every minute.
WANTED CONNECTIONS
Flirationships: Isabel is gay so any ladies/nb dreams may apply. Friends: Isabel has been around for a few months and she's a big people person so hit her up for some friendships. Regulars: Isabel works at the bar so I imagine that there are some regulars there and Isabel definitely knows their names and drink orders. Rivals: Isabel doesn't always think through her words so she's probably pissed someone off along the way. Connections through Eliana: Isabel and Eliana dated for a few years and lived together back in LA. LA Friends: Anyone she could've met in LA when she was living there. Soccer Mates: Isabel has joined a local recreational soccer group, I imagine it's mixed genders. Isabel is not as good as she once was but she is still pretty good. 'Fans': Isabel wasn't a huge name but some people may be aware of her from her time at Chelsea, Angel City or on the England team.
BACKGROUND / BIO
triggering / sensitive content: injury
On the 4th March 1989 Isabel Mulligan was born at Chelsea Hospital in England. Isabel was raised to be a star. Her father always wanted a boy but a complication during her birth meant that she was going to be the first and the last. So Henry settled with what he had and Isabel became his surrogate son. Her father’s love of football ran deep and she wore her first Chelsea kit when she was only a few days old. She kicked her first ball before she could walk unaided and before her first birthday she attended her first Chelsea game.
All their quality time was spent outside with a football, no matter the weather. Isabel had always had a knack for the sport but it wasn’t obvious how skilled she was until she was put amongst her peers. They moved house when Isabel was 5 and in a bid to help her make friends before she started a new school her father enrolled her in a soccer summer camp. It was mainly boys but Isabel quickly put them in their place, out manoeuvring them, by the end of the week she was playing with children two years older than herself and had been offered a place on a local U7s team.
She played mixed football until she was 12. She had to continually prove herself against the boys, every new team they played underestimated her and it was her job to show them that she was more than capable. When she turned 12 she was told she needed to play with girls, problem was, there was no local girls team. Henry Mulligan was not going to let that stop his daughter’s progress though so he started one, coaching and managing it. The other girls were far below Isabel’s level to begin with but they worked hard and Isabel learnt to adjust to the female version of the game.
Her father’s dreams came true when at 15 she was accepted into the youth program at Chelsea Football Club. She made a name for herself quickly and many people wondered how she hadn’t been noticed before hand. The truth was her dad would’ve loved to have had her at Chelsea since she was a tiny but the price was far beyond what they could afford so she’d only attended the free summer schools. She absolutely loved the opportunity to play with highly skilled players, she was no longer the best on the team but instead of deterring her that just pushed her to work harder and to train more.
Isabel was 17 when she got called up to the Chelsea women’s squad. In her first appearance she played for 10 minutes and got one assist. It was a great debut but she was frustrated that her name wasn’t on the scoresheet, she felt she could do better. She continued to play for them for the next two years and her minutes increased however she never made the starting squad. In all honesty Isabel knew that she didn’t have the drive that the other girls had, she was good but to be great you needed to be dripping with passion and that just wasn’t Isabel. To her it was still a game, it wasn’t her life.
She was 19 when she suffered an ACL injury that left her needing an operation. Her contract expired and Isabel decided not to renew it, she wanted to heal without the pressure of going back to the team. For Isabel though it was a wakeup call, she had nothing in her life except for Chelsea and that scared her. She had no other skills, barely any friends outside of the team and hadn’t had a single relationship that lasted more than a few weeks. She had barely left the country, she needed to spread her wings. Then she got an offer to play at Angel City in Los Angeles. It was a chance to play the game she loved but also to figure out who she was away from her family.
Moving to America was the best decision that she ever made. She was able to be herself, she fell back in love with the game, made friends and even started dating. It was true freedom and Isabel didn’t always make the best choices, but they were her own choices and that was all that mattered. She met after a year and suddenly she was completely wrapped up in her, falling in love so quickly.
She kept playing at Angel City but she knew that the calibre of the club was nowhere near what she had been playing back in Chelsea. She spent her free time drinking and partying and getting closer to Eliana. Then everything blew up and soon Isabel was alone again. First love was amazing but first heartbreak was worse than a torn ACL. Once again her contract came to an end and Isabel threw in the towel once more. She stewed in her misery until one of her friends dragged her to her hometown in Maine for the summer. It was nice to be in a new environment, one that didn’t have memories of Eliana or football.
After the summer she decided to leave Angel City and she headed back home to England. She was picked up by Chelsea again and signed on with them initially on a 1 year contract. She was loaned out to Brighton and played two years there before moving back to Chelsea full time. She was older and more experienced and it was obvious on the pitch. She finally got her name on the starting lineup and everything felt like it was falling into place. Then something happened that hse'd not even dreamed of, she was called up to play for her country. She acquired a few caps over the years but the most exciting was being part of the 2022 Euros team that won the whole thing. She was a substitute but she was part of it, that was all that mattered. She was also part of the World Cup Squad but once that competition was finished she decided to retire from football.
Without football she felt a bit lost. Her whole life had become dedicated to a sport that no longer loved her back and her best few years had been dedicated to the girl of her dreams, now she had neither. Then three months ago she decided to go back to the place where she’d last felt free, Merrock Maine. It was impulsive and probably rather stupid, but she abandoned her lease in London and took up a new one in the small town. She got herself a job at Bonne Merde and decided to start fresh, even joining a local women’s soccer team.
