I will proudly scream I am Mexican I will raise my flag high and mighty I will speak my broken Spanish– the language torn from me at birth I will wear my culture on mi cuerpo: Los serapes, off the shoulder floral tops (clothes we made that gringas copy), everything with crazy bright colors I will dance bachata, merengue, y banda I will blast mariachi music I will love my naturally sun kissed skin, I will cherish mis abuelos y papas moreno skin I will sing Mexican songs at the top of my lungs I will not apologize when my “ghetto” mexican accent comes out I will eat and cook all the recipes mi abuelita and other strong Mexican women make: Los tamales, las empeñadas, y el pozole I will drink jarritos I will drink my “cinnamon rice water”– its called horchata by the way I will not be ashamed of who I am, of who my people are I will mourn for the families torn apart by border control I will achieve all the dreams they tried to come here for, I will do it for them I will take back my culture: My clothes, my food, my music, my language, my holidays, MY LAND Porque, YO SOY MEXICANA Y LA GENTE UNIDA POR MI VIDA Y SIEMPRE
