ââmy sister Doctor Donna Strange,â Stephen said, as he introduced Donna to the donor heâd been ordered to charm. âWho agreed to be my plus one for the evening. â
âAh, two doctors in the family,â the donor, a Justin Hammer, said. âI donât believe Iâve heard your name.â He gave Donna a look that was both condescending and a little inappropriate.
âYou wouldnât have,â Donna said easily. âIâm a doctor of veterinary medicine,â she said.
âAnd the best veterinarian I know,â came a voice behind them. Stephen startled, turning automatically at the sound of Tonyâs voice. He was dressed in an elegant suit, smile genuine and eyes warm. For a moment Stephenâs heart raced and he wondered who, here, was making deals, before he realized that this was not Tony Stark the merchant, but Tony Stark the man. âHello Donna,â Tonyâs voice was soft. âStephen.â
Donna turned just as quickly as Stephen had and her eyes lit up. âTony!â She stepped in, and Stephen watched her lean in to press a hello kiss to Tonyâs cheek, completely ignoring the lack of proprietary. She had yelled at Tony only once, when she had learned that her life would eventually cost Stephen his. Then sheâd cried in Tonyâs arms and come out of it with some degree of peace that Stephen had never been able to give her.
Stephen suspected Tony just wanted to make sure that the people whose lives heâd helped saveâeven if he maintained Stephen and Donna were technically Howardâs dealsâgot to be lived fully. Though Stephen still suspected he and Donna saw Tony more than most.
âTony,â the donor, Hammer, said, tone obsequious. âSo good to see you. I wasnât aware you were friends with⌠veterinarians.â
âThe number of things youâre unaware of Justin would astonish no one,â Tony said dryly. âNow, if youâll excuse me, I had a few questions for the siblings Strange.â
Justin looked insulted, but he allowed himself to be not-so-politely shooed away.
Which⌠Stephen looked at Tony. âMy hospital director asked meââ
âJustin will try to match any donation I make,â Tony said, interrupting Stephen. âHe always does. Your hospital director will be rather pleased at you managing both of us.â He gave Stephen a once over. âYouâre looking quite dashing out of your scrubs,â he said. âI daresay I donât normally see you cleaned up.â
Stephen found himself flushing even as Tony turned to Donna, already complimenting her.
âAnd not that I donât love seeing you, Donna,â Tony added on. âBut one of these days your brother needs to find an actual date.â
âI told him that,â Donna said, sounding victorious, as though Tonyâs agreement would help her win their regular argument that Stephen needed to give the thought of love a chance.
It wouldnât, because Stephen wouldnât be persuaded.
âIâve told him he has plenty of time left,â Tony told her. âYou both do,â he added softly. âLong, full lives left to be lived.â
Stephen didnât know how they could both possibly have a long life ahead of them. But Tony quite literally couldnât answer most of those questions and probably wouldnât answer the other half.
âWell, Donnaâs not dating, either,â Stephen muttered. âSo why should I?â
Donna made a protesting sound and Tony laughed, the sound causing warmth to skitter down Stephenâs back. Sometimes it was strange to him how full of life Tony was, those times he saw him, when he dealt so much with death.
âWell, Donna, I have a few people I can introduce you to. And then perhaps youâll help me find someone for your brother.â
Stephen didnât like the sound of that, or the quick way Donna agreed.
âDo you interfere in everyoneâs lives this way?â he asked.
Tony grinned at him. âOnly the ones I especially like,â he teased, before he turned back to Donna. âNow, Iâm fairly certain youâre not hopeless, so letâs find you a lovely partner for the night thatâs not your brother and then you and I can work on finding someone your brother will give a chance.â

For my second prompt, any chance we can get a continuation to Hydra Hostage Stephen please?
I have finally put this one on AO3, so the link to all of the series is right here.
Magic. The word buzzed in Tonyâs brain as Stephen leaned heavily against him, breath still a little uneven as he came down from the panic attack that Tony had inadvertently caused.
Magic.
Admittedly, Tony wasnât as surprised about that fact as he wished he was. But heâd been sharing space with a flying, sentientâfully sapient, evenâcloak for long enough that it would probably have been weirder if Tony hadnât started catching a clue.
Stephen was magic too, or he had been and maybe still was. From context clues Tony could put together that Hydra had been trying to remove the magic from Stephenâor at least the ability to use magic, Tony really didnât know enough of the details of how the magic worked to even guess at that.
Mordo, whoever he was, had likely been another magic user. Someone who had betrayed Stephen to Hydra. That made him dangerous in more than one way. Dangerous in how far heâd go. Dangerous in how ill-thought out the plan was. If Hydra did learn something from what theyâd done to Stephen, some past alliance wouldnât protect Mordo if they decided to turn it against him.
But that, Tony reminded himself, did not matter right now.
Right now what mattered was Stephen and helping him.
Though Tony had no clue where to start. He wasnât even entirely sure what had brought the conversation about. Stephen still didnât talk much, most certainly not about Hydra or his past. The fact that heâd brought it up completely unprompted probably meant something, but Tony hardly knew what.
Stephenâs breathing was steadying, shifting a little to better look at him Tony realized that steadying wasnât the right word. It was deepening as Stephen was seemingly falling asleep. Tony glanced at his table and acknowledged to himself that he wouldnât be getting much work done in the near future, not with how Stephenâs weight was settling against Tony like Tony was a favorite pillow.
He ran a hand over his face. He hadnât meant to bring about this newest panic attack and it gave the lurking thoughts that he wasnât the right person to help Stephen back to the forefront. And now that Stephen was back in contact with Wong⌠well, there was a good chance that wouldnât be his responsibility for much longer.
Which was good in the sense that it meant Stephen was healing, but Tony still couldnât quite stop the sense of loss it filled him with, either. Which was ridiculous, because the whole point of Stephen being here was to help Stephen heal so he could return to his life. Which was what Tony wanted for Stephen. But the sting of loss didnât quite fade even with that knowledge.
âI have no clue what Iâm doing,â Tony said aloud. He looked up at the ceiling. âJARVIS, why didnât someone put a stop to this before I was made responsible for someone elseâs wellbeing.â
âPerhaps, sir,â JARVIS started, âyou are alone in finding yourself a poor choice.â
Tony made a face at the nearest camera, but was distracted by the shift of red in the corner of his eye.
He turned to see the Cloak had disentangled itself from Stephenâthough it kept a corner of fabric wrapped around Stephenâs wrist to maintain contact. The Cloak shifted so that it was in front of Tony, fabric rippling and lapels shifting in a way that looked like both question and remonstration.
Tony took a guess at the meaning. âIâm not saying I regret it,â he said. âIâm just saying Stephen deserves someone who actually knows what theyâre doing and can help. This is the second panic attack Iâve managed to send him spiraling into.â Presumably someone who knew what they were doing would be smart enough not to do that.
A flash of red and Tony received a gentle swat to the head.
âIâm not feeling sorry for myself,â Tony protested. âIâm just sayingââ
The Cloak crossed fabric the way a teacher would cross their arms.
Tony sighed. âI just want to do whatâs best for him,â he said quietly. âAnd as long as he wants to be here, he has a place here. I just donât know if Iâm whatâs best for him. I donât know what Iâm doing.â
The Cloak reached out and touched his cheek, almost gentle, before shifting to fall back on top of Stephen.
Well, at least the Cloak thought Tony knew what he was doing. Or at least thought Tonyâs fumbling wouldnât mess up things too much.
Stephen shifted against him a little, but Tony startled when Stephen spoke, rough and sleepy. âWant to.â
Tony frowned. âWant to what?â he asked.
âI want to be here,â Stephen said. âPlease donâtâŚâ He felt Stephen shudder against him.
âI wonât,â Tony said, guessing at how that sentence was supposed to be finished. âI wonât send you away.â
When Stephen felt healed enough, Tony would help him move on, but until then⌠Stephen could call Tonyâs place home as long as he wanted.
Could we have more of the one with cuddling for warmth? I think about it often ;). Thanks!
Sequel to this!
âIf you want to play an ice breaker, youâre going to have to go first.â Stephen chanced looking back at Tony and was met with the full force of Tonyâs smile, satisfied and a little conspiratorial, as if he was inviting Stephen to participate in something secret.
âAlright, letâs start with an easy one. Whatâs your name, gorgeous?â
Oh. My. God. If he thought heâd been blushing before, he certainly was now. Tony Stark was flirting with him. In an inescapable forced-close-quarters situation. With his arms around Stephen who was fully sitting on his lap. It wouldâve been a dream if it wasnât such a nightmare.
âStephen. Doctor Stephen Strange,â he said belatedly, realizing heâd just been staring. âI know who you are, of course.â
âBelieve it or not, I actually think I know who you are, too. The Strange-Palmer technique, right?â
Maybe this was a dream. There was no way Tony Stark was familiar with his research. âThatâs right. I didnât think surgical techniques fell under your purview.â
âThe research was promising for recovery from paralysis after a trauma. My best friend can walk today because of your technique.â
Stephen couldnât help it- he was too overwhelmed to do anything but tip his forehead down to rest on Tonyâs shoulder, effectively obscuring his face. There was no chance that this was real. Perhaps he was trapped in some kind of illusion, or he was going into shock and hallucinating. There was no way that he was somehow personally relevant to Tony Starkâs life, enough that he knew Stephen by name. And yet everything felt real and he couldnât sense any ambient magic in the immediate vicinity.
âAre you alright?â Tony asked, his voice gentle.
âIâm sorry, I- Iâm just overwhelmed. This is-⌠not a situation I ever thought Iâd find myself in. Several times over.â
âI get that. Itâs not every day a beautiful, non-hostile magic user portals into my house and then turns out to be a famous doctor who by all accounts disappeared in 2016.â
âI was neither famous nor did I disappear,â Stephen shot back, choosing to ignore the compliment Tony had slipped in. âMy friends knew I was alive and in New York.â
âWell, when Dr. Palmer consulted on my friendâs surgery she didnât seem to know where you were.â
âWhen was that?â Stephen lifted his head, his embarrassment washed away by shock. Christine had met Tony Stark and sheâd never mentioned it?
â2016. Not that long after you disappeared.â
âAh. It did take me a while to⌠re-establish contact.â Perhaps Christine had been afraid that Stephen would react poorly to learning that the modern Da Vinci had looked for them after heâd lost his hands.
âDid you go away to learn magic?â Tonyâs voice was curious, but still gentle.
âYes, and no. I went to heal my hands. I found magic, instead, and realized that I could do so much more like this than I could as a surgeon.
âThatâs quite admirable. Itâs not always easy, choosing to help people like that.â
âI bet you know a thing or two about that.â Stephenâs voice came out much softer than he intended, and Tony offered him a smile that was a little bit sad and a little bit resigned and entirely removed from the smiles he gave people at events and things. For whatever reason, Tony clearly trusted him enough to get a little vulnerable, and he didnât want to make that trust misplaced.
âYeah. Anyway, I think itâs your turn to ask an ice breaker.â
âRight.â Heâd almost forgotten they were doing this. âLet me think of one.â
Please feel free to tell me if Iâm hogging your prompts. I just have so many ideas⌠and if some are not your thing, itâs more than okay to pass. I think itâs obvious by now that I love your writing :).
What about a shorter one for inspiration this time? I have a great fondness for the âmagic turned Stephen temporarily into a catâ trope. Maybe he enjoys being a cat, but still has bad pain days with his hands/paws, and comes to appreciate Tonyâs newly discovered weakness for pampering cat!Stephen.
Thanks for bringing it up because I want everyone to know that there's no such thing as hogging my prompts! The more prompts that are sitting in my inbox, the more likely I'll see one that grabs my brain and allows me to write it for the day. To that end, if anyone has sent a prompt in that I haven't delivered on, know that I have been thinking about how to proceed with it and it'll show up someday! If I pass on a prompt, I'll do so pretty quickly once it comes in, so if you haven't seen your prompt come up it is still sitting in my queue waiting for inspiration and opportunity to line up.
Now, on to the actual prompt!
Stephen bit back a grimace as another spasm caused his right hand to sieze painfully. It was dreadfully cold today, and his hands had been crushed tightly to his chest in a fight with an errant soul squid, so it was safe to say that in pain was an understatement. Sure, he was used to pain, but that didn't stop it from hurting.
He'd already taken what medication he could and now there was little he could do but wait. He couldn't even Astral project to escape the pain- they weren't called soul squids for nothing- and the only other thing that even sort of worked aside from knocking himself out was now ruined forever, because Tony Stark had swept in and improved it and it wasn't the same without... those improvements.
Well.
There was one thing he could do. He could call Tony and beg him to have pity on him. The very thought of doing so made his heart race. Lately, every moment they spent together was draped in tension. It was as if there was an invisible spring between them that kept winding tighter and tighter with every inch they grew closer, and sooner or later it would snap.
Stephen's bet- and his hope- was that it would be soon. But asking Tony for this felt entirely too soon. It was the kind of treatment one gave their partner, and the only reason he'd gotten it before was because he'd gotten attacked on his birthday and Tony had demanded to try and 'fix' his day.
What had followed was the most comfortable and physically satisfying evening he'd ever had in his entire life, and they hadn't so much as kissed. Tony had run him a bath and cooked him dinner and given him a massage, which he was unfairly talented at. And then... he'd indulged one of Stephen's deepest wishes, the kind of thing his touch-starved, emotion-choked childhood self had daydreamed about. He'd let Stephen retreat into his second form- a cat- where some sensations were pleasantly dulled and others were pleasantly sharpened, and then he'd spent nearly two hours lavishing that form with the same kind of attention.
Normally, on nights as bad as tonight, he retreated to his second form, but after experiencing Tony's attention he knew it would feel hollow, and he might do something he'd regret. A sorcerer's second form was a representation of their being, usually taking the form of an earthly animal. The second form was a mark in mystic education, and it was meant to allow a sorcerer to gain a greater understanding of their feelings and desires. For Stephen, it was also a reprieve from his pain, especially in his hands- physical touch was slightly duller but warmth was stronger, and the magic supplemented his paws to allow him to walk on them. It was the most comfortable he ever got these days, but he knew it would no longer hold the same comfort it had before.
The last time he'd been in that form, Tony had been there. Tony had held him, and petted him, and didn't seem at all phased by the fact that he could do things like scratch between Stephen's ears and idly stroke his tail and best of all, the most hedonistic thing Stephen had ever experienced: he'd ever-so-gently massaged Stephen's paws. Tiny, gentle-pressed circles and careful stretches and slow soft pressure that not only pushed the pain away completely, but replaced it with pure comfortable pleasure. It was so, so rare for him to feel a resting neutral, to be not in any pain at all- to be granted a reprieve from his pain and receive pleasure in its place was something he'd long given up the hope of achieving. And yet Tony had gone and done it, casually, as if there was nothing wrong with Stephen needing to be a cat, as if he was just as worth being around in that form as he was a human who could meaningfully reciprocate interaction.
Taking his second form had brought him comfort before, but nothing could compare to sinking into Tony's extremis-enhanced warmth and being massaged and petted and utterly, perfectly comfortable and content. The second form was meant to let sorcerers get more comfortable with their desires, and he knew that he could never take his feline form again unless Tony was there, or there was a strong chance he'd go to wherever Tony was and demand his attention again. He could not let that happen.
No, if he was going to ask Tony for something so... intimate, he would have to do it person to person. And he didn't feel he had the right to do that. So, he resigned himself to an uncomfortable evening sulking in bed. The Cloak was wrapped around his hands, gentle but warm, and he tried to focus on that instead of on the gnawing desire that had been ignited since the moment he knew it was a possibility.
And then the air shifted with the soft whoosh that came with the Sanctum's warping, and Tony Stark was suddenly standing in his bedroom with one hand raised as if to knock on the door.
"Stephen!" Tony exclaimed, clearly just as shocked as he was. "Did you do that or did the Sanctum? I didn't even manage to knock on the front door."
"The Sanctum must've done it. I wouldn't warp you without telling you first."
"Okay. Uh, can I come in? I meant to knock."
Stephen couldn't help but smile- sometimes Tony seemed almost shy in a way that was utterly endearing. "Yes, you can come in. You can sit, too, if you'd like."
Tony offered him a cute, shy smile and stepped forward to sit on the edge of Stephen's bed. Stephen counted himself lucky that he'd been sitting up in bed when Tony had arrived- it saved him the trouble of revealing how sore he was by trying to move now.
"I brought some food, if you're hungry. I heard you had a rough day so I brought a utensil option, a finger food option, and also a drinkable soup." As he spoke, Tony set the bag he'd apparently been holding down on the bed, as if in offering.
"I-..." Stephen was overwhelmed by the care displayed in Tony's actions, which of course only made his hands shake harder. "I'm honestly not sure if I can hold anything right now. It's been a bad day for my hands."
"Are you hungry? I can and will feed you if you want me to."
"What, you want to nurse me back to health on your night off?" It was meant to be a joke, but he sounded a little too shocked for it to really land.
"You think I've got something better to do than bring you a little relief?" Tony asked, knocking him completely off any axis he'd been clinging to. "So do you want pesto ravioli, charcuterie-snack-box-slash-appetizer-plate, or soup? I've got congee with a little extra broth and egg drop soup."
"You brought all of this just because I might be hungry?"
"No, I brought all of this because I thought you might not have eaten. I knew you'd be hungry eventually so the food would get eaten no matter what."
Stephen was quiet for a moment, processing that. Tony wanted to care for him so much that he was building contingency plans into his attempts. If it hadn't been before, his heart began to pound. This was a kind of care and intimacy he'd never been afforded by anyone. And here Tony was, offering it freely as if it were easy to do so, as if it were fact. The spring coiled tighter and for a moment he thought it would snap.
Then, Tony opened a box and the smell of something deep-fried hit Stephen's nose, and his stomach grumbled- loudly. To make matters worse, Tony laughed. Moment thoroughly broken.
"Do you want a fried pickle chip? I've also got fried onions and fried green beans- wasn't sure what you'd prefer- as well as mozzarella sticks, Mac and cheese bites, and popcorn chicken, plus the charcuterie stuff."
"Tony, that's so much food."
"It's one of every appetizer on my home chef quick menu that doesn't require dexterity to eat."
Another shockingly thoughtful layer to the action. Stephen couldn't help but blurt out his most prominent question. "Why are you trying so hard to take care of me right now?"
"Because it makes you happy," Tony responded simply and without hesitation, and Stephen immediately felt his face flush. "You deserve to be taken care of just as much as anyone, and I know you don't get that enough. If I can provide that, why shouldn't I?"
For a moment, twin flames of exhilaration and panic burned bright in his chest and Stephen could do nothing but stare at Tony, shocked and red.
"You told me that your birthday was one of the best nights of your life," Tony continued, reaching out to lay a hand on Stephen's leg. "If dinner and a massage is all it takes to give you that kind of happiness, I want to do it for you regularly. You deserve the opportunity to have those needs met."
"I don't need-" Stephen began, but cut himself off roughly. The truth was, he'd been touch-starved since Donna died, and that night with Tony had eased an ache that was damn near permanent. Despite himself, he'd been unable to hide the impact it had had on his mood- he'd ridden that high for almost two weeks. Of course Tony would have noticed that. "I- what do you get out of this, exactly?"
"Peace of mind, knowing that you've eaten well. A sense of fulfillment, knowing that I'm giving you something you need- something we both need- via physical touch. A sense of pride, knowing that I was able to stop your pain for even a little while. And, selfishly, a sense of pride in knowing that you trust me enough to let me see you in your other form- if that's something you'd be interested in doing again."
There was a hopeful edge to that last statement, and Stephen took a slow breath to try and calm his racing heart. "You want to do that again? It wasn't... off-putting?"
"Off-putting? Try captivating. Stephen, getting to- to hold you and pet you was exhilarating. That you'd choose to take on such a small, fragile form and then place yourself in my arms, that you let me massage your paws, that it helped? I loved it. I've always had to fight for people's trust. My whole life, I've had to earn the trust of my loved ones and the media and the public over and over again, but you... you just give it to me freely, like it's not even a question. And I know you're not like that with everyone, and it makes it easier for me to trust you. Isn't that... special?"
Stephen's heart soared, and a wave of fondness crashed over him, leaving behind a spark of desire. "Just to clarify, are you hoping for a platonic arrangement or a romantic one?"
"This is on a separate axis from that. I would want to do this with you regardless of whether it were romantic or platonic. This is something that you and I can do that's undeniably intimate, yes, but it doesn't have to be one or the other. What you and I have is what you and I have, and it matters to me regardless."
The warmth that had crept up Stephen's neck and across his cheeks spread across the rest of his body as Tony rambled. It was better than an admission of romantic feelings- Tony had just boldly stated that Stephen was important to him in any capacity, that he was worth keeping around even if their entire relationship was on Stephen's terms.
"While that was perhaps the best answer I could've gotten, I'm asking because I want to know if I can ask you to kiss me."
"Oh!" Now it was Tony's turn to flush, and Stephen couldn't contain his grin. Tony was adorable. "Yes. Yes, please."
"Tony?"
"Yeah, Stephen?"
"Come here and kiss me."
Tony's smile was as radiant as the sun as he scooted closer and leaned in for a kiss. Stephen tried to meet him partway, but Tony must've noticed his stiffness because he gently guided Stephen back with a hand on his chest.
The kiss was gentle and languid, like Tony wanted to savor it. Stephen hummed, freeing his hands from the cloak's makeshift muff to reach for Tony, one shaking hand curling loosely over his waist and the other coming up in a weak approximation of grabbing his shoulder. Even the sheer act of laying his hand on Tony's shoulder was enough to trigger another strong spasm, which made him gasp, regrettably cutting the kiss short.
"As nice as that was, we should get some food in you so that I can help you with that. If you'll allow me to."
Stephen smiled despite the pain- even now, Tony was acting like it was a privilege to grant Stephen's most selfish desires.
"Why wait? I'm not hungry."
Without waiting for a response, Stephen slipped into his second form, which to Tony would look like him flickering into a cat. Tony gave a single shocked laugh.
"Okay, but I will make sure you eat before going to bed, which means you can't cat nap on my chest all day."
Stephen paid him no mind as he climbed onto Tony's lap and settled there, just barely managing to withhold his purrs until Tony's fingers skimmed over his fur. He was far too eager for this to wait long enough to eat first, no matter how hungry he was. And even if this meant this session had to be shorter, something told him that Tony would be willing to indulge him again very soon.
It was official: Tony had outdone himself. He was now responsible for entries one and two on Stephen's list of best days ever. He could already picture the satisfied smile Tony would make when Stephen told him... later. Right now, he got to just sit back, relax, and enjoy for once, and that was just what he was gonna do.
They started as comrades in arms, became friends, and are now lovers.
How should they deal with such a change? How can they avoid the mistakes of the past? Tony and Stephen are taking their first steps in their new relationship.
It's not easy, but it's worth the effort.

They just deserve both so much love...

âBoss, Doctor Strange is at the front door.â
Tony's heart leapt when he heard Friday speak.
It wasn't particularly surprising, though.
After all, they had been visiting each other's homes almost every week for the past five years.
Except today was different.
They were no longer just friends, but lovers too.
At least, if Tony wasn't mistaken about what had happened the previous night at the S.I. charity gala.
There was a soft knock at the door.
Tony had informed Stephen that he could access the portal; it had been a considerable time since magic, at least Stephen's kind, had caused him alarm, but the sorcerer had always maintained that he wished to respect those boundaries.
Tony took a deep breath and ran his hand through his hair for the umpteenth time that day before going to open the door.
It was indeed different.
The ease that had characterized their previous encounters was gone.
Tony's usual easy, relaxed smile had given way to a softer, more hesitant expression.
"Hey," Stephen said, his voice lower than usual.
"Hey," Tony managed to say, his voice weak.
"Come in."
Stephen walked past him, their shoulders brushing in the doorway. Tony closed the door; the click of the latch echoed in the apartment's silence.
âTea?â
Without waiting for an answer, Tony headed to the open kitchen to prepare their drinks: coffee for himself and tea for Stephen. As he took out the mugs, he spoke to Stephen, his back still turned.Â
"My God, what a morning! The weather has changed, hasn't it? They're forecasting unstable skies this afternoon. Isn't it funny how the weather forecast is never wrong when it comes to predicting bad weather? Anyway, I hope there won't be any emergencies because I hate flying in the rain. I thought we were going to have a sunny week. The atmospheric pressure is completely unstable. I hope Ororo has nothing to do with it."
He was rambling. He knew he was rambling. Tony wanted to bang his head against the kitchen counter.Â
However, his anxiety was so intense that he couldn't control what he said. He was terrified of realizing that yesterday had been a dream. That their friendship was ruined forever.Â
So he used his most effective defense: drowning his interlocutor in a flood of information.Â
As he continued, he focused on the tea infusing in Stephen's mug and the coffee dripping into his.Â
Why was it dripping so fast, anyway? He wasn't ready to turn around yet.Â
Once the mugs were full and the machine was off, he had no choice but to turn around. Unable to back away any further, he finally turned around, holding both mugs.
He almost spilled them when he jumped because Stephen was right in front of him, just a few inches away.Â
Stephen was so close that Tony could feel the heat emanating from his body.Â
The sorcerer took the mugs from Tony's hands. Tony opened his mouth to make a trivial remark, but he couldn't continue because Stephen gently placed a finger on his lips after setting the mugs on the counter behind him.Â
Without giving Tony time to think, Stephen leaned in and kissed him, replacing his finger with his lips.
It was a light press of the lips at first. Soft and tenderânot the frantic, desperate kiss from the night before, filled with years of unspoken feelings.Â
It was different. Even better, if possible.
This time, it was slow and deliberate. It was a soothing, comforting kiss. Stephen's other hand rested on Tony's neck, his fingers digging gently but firmly into his hair. Tony's hands rested on Stephen's waist, clinging to the soft fabric of his shirt, while Stephen's lips erased all his doubts.
When they finally parted, their breathing had quickened slightly. Stephen rested his forehead against Tony's and smiled slightly.
"Sorry I didn't ask your permission to kiss you this time."
Tony chuckled softly. The tension that had been gnawing at him for hours finally dissipated.
"Did I give you the impression that I didn't enjoy it?"Â
All traces of awkwardness disappeared in the simple, shared humor of the situation.
With their steaming mugs in hand, they settled onto the large, comfortable sofa in the living room. They sat side by side, as always, but this time their bodies touched, the distance no longer necessary.
Stephen took a sip of tea and said with a small smile, "It's going to take some getting used to, isn't it?"Â
Tony nodded, his eyes fixed on the dark liquid in his mug.
"Yeah, it's a bit unsettling. I want to talk to you like usual, but I also want to..." Tony made a vague gesture between them. "I mean, you know. I don't know how to do it. There hasn't been anyone since Pepper, and even then, it was... Anyway, the past is the past. All that to say, I'm a little rusty."
Stephen replied with a half-smile, "There's no protocol, at least I don't think so. I'm not really an expert either. But if we take things as they come and talk about them, it should be fine. We're doing pretty well so far."Â
Tony laughed softly. "Improvising, huh? I built my first suit of armor in a basement in Afghanistan with my heart connected to a car battery, so I know a lot about improvisation. But..."
Tony took a breath before continuing.Â
"About my reputation." He glanced at Stephen.
"You know what the papers have said about my romantic entanglements. A few years ago, Stephen, I'm not gonna lieâwe'd probably both be in my bed right now. But Iâve changed. Maybe you don't believe it, but I have. Really. What we have is special, and I donât want to ruin it by rushing things.â
Tony set down his mug and looked down, waiting for Stephenâs reaction. The sorcerer set down his mug and turned fully toward Tony. He took his lover's hand and gently stroked his palm with his thumb.Â
"I've never paid much attention to the tabloids, but I won't lie and say that I've never heard or read anything about it. The most important thing, though, is that I know you. The real you."
"You're the one who didn't rest until you erased the memory of the Merchant of Death."
"You're the one who spends sleepless nights hunched over your screens until you find the solution to a problem that is usually someone else's."
"You're the one who remembers how I drink my tea and always makes it to my liking."
"You're the one who was able to forgive his parents' murderer because you saw the man, not the crime."
"You're the one who pays attention to details, to the point of finding a perfect nickname for anyone you meet."
"You're the one who is capable of giving everything for a world that has hurt you more than once."
"You're the one who is funny, intelligent, compassionate, and aware of your mistakes, constantly seeking to correct them. You."Â
Stephen lifted their joined hands and pressed a long kiss on Tony's knuckles.
"That's the Tony I know and want."
Not knowing how to answer, Tony leaned forward and kissed Stephen, expressing his gratitude in a way that was much more eloquent than words.
A little later, they were chatting on the sofa like they did before their relationship shifted. The difference was that now their conversation was punctuated with kisses and caresses. A soft kiss after a shared joke. A light touch after a moment of vulnerability. A playful kiss following a teasing remark. Everything was amplified because they no longer needed to restrain themselves.Â
In the middle of a particularly passionate kiss, Tony shifted and swung one leg over Stephen's knees to get closer. He found himself lying on top of Stephen, their bodies pressed together from chest to knees. Stephen's arms held Tony tightly, pulling him close. Tony rested his head in the crook of Stephen's neck simply because he could.
The silence between them was comfortable. At that precise moment, Tony's mind, usually in perpetual motion, fell completely still. He was aware of only one thing: Stephen.Â
For the first time in what felt like an eternity, Tony wasn't thinking about what he had to do next. He wasn't planning his next project, mentally mapping out a blueprint, worrying about a deadline. He was just...there. Lying on top of his lover, he relished the overwhelming simplicity of the present moment.
He lifted his head, and Stephen took his lips for another slow, languid kiss that lingered.
Suddenly, the familiar sound of a portal opening interrupted them, and they turned their heads to see Wong appear in the circle of sparks.Â
Wong scanned the scene impassively while Tony, who had sat down next to Stephen, noticed a slight, knowing twitch at the corner of his lips.Â
âStephen, I'm sorry to interrupt,â Wong said, unable to completely hide his amusement, "We have an emergency. "
He nodded toward Tony and added with a small smile, "It's good that you're here."Â
Tony snickered. After all, he was in his own home.Â
Wong continued, "We'll probably need your expertise."
Without waiting for a response, he closed the portal and disappeared from their view.Â
For a brief moment, they stood motionless.Â
Stephen grumbled, "Looks like I have no choice." "
Tony nudged him gently with his shoulder. "You did say we had to improvise, didn't you?"
"That's not what I meant."
Tony pressed a light kiss to the corner of his lover's lips and said, "It's part of it, isn't it? Sorcerer, superheroâthe whole shebang. Who better than me to understand?"Â
Stephen let out a small laugh and stood up.
In one swift movement, he donned his Sorcerer Supreme outfit under Tony's appreciative gaze. This time, Tony did not hide the effect that seeing his lover in this guise had on him.
Stephen asked, "Do you need some time to get ready?"
Tony winked at him. "Only a few seconds longer than you, my dear Sorcerer Supreme."
With a press of his thumb to the watch on his wrist, the armor unfolded over him like a second skin, leaving only his head exposed.
Stephen moved closer, and, cupping Tony's face in his hands, he pressed a tender kiss on his lips.Â
Tony laughed.
Stephen raised an eyebrow.
Between laughs, Tony explained, "I was just imagining the headlines: 'Sorcerer Supreme Passionately Kisses Iron Man. Is Tomorrow the End of the World? Is Iron Man Bewitched?"
The sorcerer rolled his eyes before opening a portal in front of them. He stepped forward and turned to Tony with his hand outstretched.
"Ready?"
Tony grabbed his lover's hand and nodded.
"Together."
Stephen smiled, and they stepped through the portal together.

Tony and Stephen sharing a bath. Either established relationship or get together. (I'd be impressed if it was a get together fic, but part of the idea of the prompt is to give you an easy one, so don't feel you must take up the challenge. LOL)
âSerious question,â Tony started.
Laying on the mat beside him, Stephen made an inquiring noise, clearly under the impression that forming actual words was too much work. Tony didnât blame him, he didnât particularly want to be putting in the effort either. Tony didnât know who had thought it had been a good idea to have a âweek-long bootcampâ, but it had been a bad idea and Tony should have faked an injury on day one.
âCan we just never move again?â He stared up at the ceiling, his whole body feeling soreâhe wasnât even sure if it was a good sore or a bad sore at this point, it was just soreâas he contemplated the best ways to never have to move again. The suit was pretty adaptive right now, it could probably just float him along.
âI canât currently think of a good reason for why we would need to,â Stephen said. âBut that might change once the sweat settles.â
Just the thought of it made Tony shudder. He actually enjoyed working up a good sweatâa good workout, heavy work in the lab, sexâbut he hated staying sweaty. Worse, now that Stephen had mentioned it, Tony could feel the sweat where it was cooling on his body. âYou just had to say that. Now I have to move.â
âShame on me,â Stephen said, sounding not at all ashamed.
Tony rolled his eyes, thinking longingly of getting into a nice, hot both. âI miss my Malibu mansion bath,â he said. âOr the tower bath. That one was nice, too. The compound is just so⌠practical. Donât get me wrong, the water pressure is great, the heat is phenomenal. But just so⌠economical. I should have stayed a hedonist. What was I thinking?â
Stephen let out a low laugh at that. âYou should have known better. Being a hedonist makes life far more fun.â The words reminded Tony that before Stephen had become a surgeon, heâd been a neurosurgeon who drove fancy cars and lived in a luxury apartment. He would understand the value of an excessive bath setup. âWhat would you give me if I fixed that for you?â Stephen added.
Tony perked up a little. âWhat do you want?â Tony asked, because heâd probably offer Stephen just about anything he wanted and he should probably not negotiate against himself by promising Stephen the worldâworld domination was an awful lot of work.
âWell,â Stephen said. âAfter all that work, I wouldnât mind using the bath myself.â
Seriously? That was all? âDeal.â
âYou should wait until I finish,â Stephen teased. âI was going to say I wouldnât mind using the bath myself, with you still in it.â
There was a hint of teasing to the words, but at the same time⌠Tony was pretty sure Stephen meant that. A flush of pleasure ran down his back. Suddenly cleaning off the sweat was only part of the reason why he wanted that bath. âYou promise?â Tony teased. âBecause thatâs a deal twice over.â
Stephen was on his feet faster than Tony would have expectedâthough maybe the Cloak had helpedâsmug look on his face. âWell then, Iâll meet you in your bathroom.â He had opened a portal and stepped through before Tony had even gotten to his feet.
Well⌠This was sure to be interesting.
By the time Tony made it to his apartment within the compound and into the bathroom, magic had completely reworked the area. The annoyingly practical bath was now a large, spacious tub already half-full with hot water. Stephen was already de-robing and Tonyâs mouth went dry.
Stephen had been serious.
Maybe Tony had fallen asleep on the training mats and was dreaming, because this was a dream come true.
He didnât hesitate to undress himself and it was only a minute later that he was slipping into the tubâfull of gloriously hot waterâwith Stephen. He let out a sigh of pure relief as his muscles relaxed. He eyed Stephen, wondering just how far was too far in this little deal of theirs. He was pretty sure he knew where this was going, but he should probably ask.
âSo,â he said. âNow that Iâve got you wet and naked⌠does this mean I get to put my hands all over you?â
Stephenâs smirk was so damnably smug. âOnly if I can get my hands all over you in exchange,â he said. âIt would only be fair.â
Well, far be it from Tony to deny Stephen a fair exchange. âYouâve got a deal.â
AHHHH FINALLY CAUGHT IT WHILE DOING FLASHCARDS FOR MCAT STUDYING
Could we get continuation to hydra hostage Stephen?
I hope studying is going well!! Good luck with MCAT studying, you've got this! Sequel to one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, and thirteen.
It was a good middle ground, Stephen decided, as he and Tony waited in Tonyâs mostly-unused office within the company parts of Stark Tower. It meant Stephen didnât need to leave the tower, but kept Tonyâs apartments untouched by this interaction.
As guilty as it made Stephen feel, he didnât want Wong to be able to visualize Tonyâs apartments. He didnât want Wongâhe didnât want anyoneâbe able to reach him too easily. Even though he knew that Wong wasnât at fault for what Mordo had done, it felt impossible for Stephen to extend the entirety of his trust to anyone right now.
The Cloak and Tony being the exceptions that proved the rule.
Although⌠he looked at Tony who was at his desk, busy on a tabletâgaze darting up every ten seconds or so to check on Stephen in his chosen cornerâand felt another twinge of guilt. He had no doubt that Tony had realized that there was more to Stephen than Stephen had shown. The Cloak, after all, was a glaring neon sign that there was more to the story. But Stephen hadnât been able to tell Tony any of that, yet. He had barely told Tony anything at all.
Why was Tony doing all this? Why was he so patient with Stephen? It was a question Stephen didnât have an answer to. It was a question he was terrified to ask, lest he draw Tonyâs attention to the foolishness of it all.
âSir,â JARVISâ voice came on. âMr. Wong has arrived. Shall I direct him up?â
Tony looked over at Stephen. âDo you want him to come up?â he asked, one last chance to back out.
Stephen hesitated and the Cloak squeezed his shoulders gently. Stephen took a deep breath then nodded. âYes,â he managed, the word hoarse.
âYou heard him, JARVIS,â Tony said. âLet him up.â
The minutes seemed to drag, Stephenâs nerves spiking as he waited.Â
When the door finally opened, it was almost a relief. Wong stood there in the doorframe for just a moment before he stepped fully into the room, though he didnât move beyond the entrance as the door shut behind him.
Stephen stiffened a little as Wongâs gaze focused on Stephen, taking him in. âItâs good to see you in one piece,â Wong said, breaking the tense silence. âWeâve been worried since you disappeared. We couldnât find trace of you, and our search for Mordo to gain answers had yielded us nothing.â
The flinch at Mordoâs name was entirely involuntary. Stephen licked his lips nervously, trying to figure out what to do. For all that Tony had given him several days to prepare, Stephen still didnât know what to do. Tony had never made him talk, and while Wong wouldnât force himâŚ
Stephen shifted to look at Tony, knowing his plea for help had to be visible in his eyes, trusting that Tony would understand as he always did. Tony knew, after all, where Stephen had ended up.
Tony stood, moving from his desk to close the space until he was sitting next to Stephen in the corner chair heâd chosen. He rested his hand palm up on his knee and Stephen realized, startled, that Tony was right. He didn't need Tony to answer for him. He just... he just needed Tony. He reached out and caught Tonyâs hand and, as though it was its own type of magic, Stephen felt the tightness in his chest ease.
He looked back at Wong who had watched it all with a thoughtful expression. âThe bill came due,â Stephen said, voice wavering only slightly. âMordoâŚâ He licked his lip nervously again. âHe made a deal, I donât know what, with Hydra.â He closed his eyes so he didnât have to see Wongâs expression, trying to breathe through it. âThey had me forââ He paused, realizing he wasnât actually sure how long any of it had been. He didnât know how long Hydra had him and heâd lost too much time in the aftermath to have accurately tracked how long heâd been free. âTony found me,â he said, instead of trying to figure that out. âHeâsâŚâ How to describe it? Heâd gotten Stephen medical care? Heâd taken Stephen in? Heâd taken care of Stephen? âHeâs helped.â How utterly insufficient.
Wongâs expression was touched with grief and a little angerâanger Stephen knew wasnât directed at him, but still made him want to flinch awayâeven as he nodded in understanding of all the things going unsaid. âIâm sorry, Stephen. That should have never happened. None of us could have ever thought Mordo was capable of that.â He glanced at Tony for a split moment. âI am not here to demand anything of you, Stephen. Just to ensure that you are well.â Wongâs brow furrowed slightly. âWhat do you need, Stephen? How can I help?â
It wasnât that Stephen had thought that there was anything particularly special about himâhe was brilliant, talented, and capable, yes, but that wasnât uniqueâbut at the same time, there had been something in him that had looked at the world and known that no one saw him. Maybe it was why heâd pushed so hard, pushed to be the best, the brightest, demanding that the world see him.
It was probably ironic, then, that it was after the Mystic Arts, after he learned to set that need aside, after he had accepted that it wasnât about him, that he found someone who saw himâunderstood himâperfectly.
Of course, if Stephen had ever considered what sort of person out there would be capable of seeing Stephen for everything he wasâand appreciating him despite, or perhaps because, of itâhe would never in a million years have guessed someone like Tony Stark.
Until, of course, he met Tony and realized that if Tony saw Stephen, then Stephen saw Tony just as clearly. And Tony⌠Tony was not who Stephenâd thought he was. Sometimes he thought Tony wasnât who Tony thought he was.
Stephen couldnât quite help the way he gravitated to Tony in the aftermath of Titan and that near end of everything. Tony had his own gravity and Stephen was helpless to it. Heâd be more disconcerted if he didnât think Tony felt something similar. Because Tonyâs gaze found him just as unerringly as Stephenâs found Tony.
For all that, though, it wasnât intense. All right, not always intenseâthe intensity was thrilling and intoxicating. No, there were times when they sat together on the roof of the Sanctum or in the chaos of Tonyâs lab and it was just them and the comfort of being seen and known.
âI should hate you, you know,â Tony said. They were leaning against each other, Stephen with his book exploring the source code of the universe and Tony with his projected schematics, the sort that would remake the world.
Stephen glanced at him, arching an eyebrow in question, because that was hardly the normal start to conversation. âYou should, should you? Fascinating insight.â
Tony just hummed in acknowledgment. âI lived my whole life trying to ensure people never saw me, just my shadow.â
âCan the sun cast its own shadow?â Stephen asked philosophically. Tony rolled his eyes, even if his lip tugged up in amusement. âI assume thatâs why you âshouldâ hate me?â Stephen asked. âBecause I see you?â
âShould,â Tony agreed. âYet somehow donât.â
âI always wanted someone to see me,â Stephen said. âI should love you for being the one who finally did.â
âShould?â Tony asked. âYet somehow donât?â
Stephen shook his head. âOh, no. Unlike you, I donât automatically try to do the opposite of what I should.â
Tonyâs hands paused where he was play with his schematics. âReally?â
âReally,â Stephen said.
Tony smiled slightly. âYou do as you should, when it suits you at least, I do the opposite, strange how thatâs working out for both of us, this time.â
I must venture a Midnight Suns prompt, if you're willing! Tony realizes he's disappointed whenever The Hunter separates him and Stephen for a mission (i.e., takes him but not Stephen, or Stephen but not him). How does Tony react to this realization?
I admit, I was very nervous to write my first Midnight Suns snippet. Hopefully it turned out okay.
Tony glared at the forgeâand very much did his best not to think about whether the Sumerian Fire Demon was staring backâin discontent. Heâd already analyzed the gamma coils from the last mission and the Hunter had yet to give any feedback on the latest suit that Tony and Stephen had developed for them.
Of course, when the potential end of the world was involved there was always something to do, but Tony found himself feeling strangely out of sorts and he didnât know why.
And there was always a why. Tonyâs default setting was working on some other invention of another. Just because heâd lost his beautiful labs in exchange for the scary demon cave didnât change that. Admittedly, he preferred being in the forge when Stephen was around, aforementioned Sumerian Fire Demon did give Tony the occasional creep. But it wasnât just that. Stephen was one of the best lab partners heâd ever had, even if he did at times go a little more verbose than the average lab partner.
And Tony wasnât just saying that because Banner had gone to the dark side and didnât seem likely to come back.
But Stephen was currently out on a mission with the Hunter and Blade to deal with a Hydra transport they suspected had a few of the Sanctumâs artifacts. It made sense that the Hunter had taken Stephen for the mission, though Tony thought he would have helped just as much as Blade could. Not that Blade wasnât competent, he was. But Tony knew Stephenâs fighting style better than probably any of the others. He would have been far better backup.
Tony let out an annoyed breath. Mostly with himself. Since when did he care so much about being picked? This wasnât recess in the schoolyard. He just⌠He just didnât like the fact that Stephen was out there without him.
The thought, finally fully coalesced, practically knocked him over.
Tony liked his fellow Avengers, even the Midnight Suns were growing on him, but he wasnât particularly bothered either way about which of them went on which missions. But StephenâŚ
Tony fought better with Stephen. Tony knew Stephen and Stephen knew Tony. It just made sense. They were better together.
In the fight.Â
Here in the forge.
They just were. And it wasnât just becauseâ
âShit,â Tony realized. âI love him. I somehow loââ
He stopped himself. NOPE. Not thinking that. There was no time for things like that at the end of the world.
He glared at the forge again, this time with actual intent. âDonât you dare tell Doctor Spooky I said that, Babs.â
The fire of the forge just crackled in what was probably fire demon laughter.
Tony decided to ignore it either way as he looked at Stephenâs station, currently empty of its resident sorcerer. Which was maybe for the best. At least at this exact moment. Because Tony had a few things he had to figure out.
Wong had disappeared some time during Tonyâs greetingâand kissingâStephen. Which was somewhat of a relief, because that meant Tony didnât need to try to explain anything⌠or deal with the judgment that was sure to be on Wongâs face.
He got Stephen to the bathroom, mentally trying to figure out what he was going to say and how to say it.
But that could wait. First he needed to focus on checking Stephen over.
The head wound, once the blood was removed, only required butterfly bandages, but it wasnât as bad as Tony had worried it might be. Though Tony had to admit it was a little distracting, trying to pay attention to Stephenâs wounds when Stephen was looking at him like that. There was something soft and warm in Stephenâs eyes. Which wasnât necessarily unusual, except for in the extra intensity behind it.
He checked over the rest of Stephen. âWell,â Tony said, once heâd satisfied himself. âYouâre not going to die.â
That earned him a bright laugh, though Stephen grimaced at the slight exertion. âI could have told you that. You just happen to be a worrywart.â
âOnly because I have someone worth worrying about,â Tony said, watching a smile tug at Stephenâs lips. âWhich brings me to what I need to talk to you about.â He licked his bottom lip nervously. He could not mess this up.Â
Stephenâs brow furrowed. âYouâre not normally nervous like this,â he said quietly. âYou know you can tell me anything, right?â
Tony managed an actual smile at that. âYeah, I do know that.â He took a deep breath. âI love you.â He met Stephenâs eyes. âI need you to trust that, no matter what happens next, that I. Love. You.â
Stephen smiled, but it was clear he was concerned. âI get the feeling that thereâs a âbutâ coming.âÂ
âI love you,â Tony reminded him. He reached into his pocket where heâd stashed the letter the Sanctum had provided. âWhile you were gone, the Sanctum gave me something that I donât think you wanted me to see.â He pulled out the letter and handed it to Stephen. âHere,â he said quietly. He slid close, setting a hand on Stephenâs hip in a silent request that Stephen not try to flee.
Stephen stared at the letter in his hands for a long moment, a flicker of unease in his eyes. âTony,â his voice was hoarse, and he didnât open the letter. âDid IâŚâ He took a deep breath, then shook his head and slowly opened the letter. His eyes glanced over the letter to himself quickly and Tony watched as something like despair filled them. He looked up at Tony, grief in his eyes. âItâs true,â he whispered. âIâm sorry⌠When I got here I thoughtâŚâ He looked away. âI didnât mean to force you. I didnât know the Sanctum had guilted you with this.â
âYou didnât,â Tony said sharply. âAnd the Sanctum didnât guilt me into anything. Stephen, I love you.â He shifted to meet Stephenâs eyes. âStephen. I love you before the Sanctum ever gave me that letter. I never said anything because I didnât imagine you could ever feel the same way for me and your friendship was so incredibly precious to me.â He brought a hand up to touch Stephenâs jaw, tilting Stephenâs head carefully so that he could kiss Stephen. He kept it soft and slow, but this time he did not end it quickly, instead he filled the kiss with the devotion it was due.
Stephen made a noise into the kiss and then pressed in, trying to deepen the kiss.
Tony let it go on for a long while, until Stephen seemed fully relaxed, like Tony had kissed away his fears. He pulled back. âNext time you write that letterââ and they still needed to discuss that, but Tony didnât want to risk this getting lost in what was sure to be a heavy discussion, ââyou can remind yourself that I love you too. Maybe even that Iâm your boyfriend.â
That earned him a real laugh. âBoyfriend?â
âIâm willing to workshop it,â Tony said teasingly. âPartner, lover, beloved, sweetheart, paramour, darlââ
âParamour?â Stephen asked, amused. âYouâre hardly an illicit partner.â
Tony shrugged. âOkay, so I guess weâre not using paramour. Weâll workshop it.â He met Stephenâs gaze. âBut Iâm yours,â he said. âIf you want me. And next time you can write that in your reminder letter. Because itâs true.â

Tony and Stephen almost get caught on a recon mission and end up either hiding in a cramped space together or making out to hide their faces
âTony?â Steve hissed. âStephen?â There was no answer except for the sound of something hitting the door. Steve went quiet, wondering if that had been a subtle attempt to tell him to shut up. He could hear strangely hitched breathing, but the steps of their unexpected visitor had faded away a few minutes ago.
They had heard steps coming on their patrol, and theyâd all gone for the closet, only to find it was tiny. Definitely too small for all three of them, but it might have fit two. Tony had declared he had an idea, had shoved Steve into the closetâwhich Steve had obediently gone along with, because Tonyâs spur of the moment plans did tend to work outâbefore shutting the door behind him.
âTony,â Steve hissed again. He nudged at the door, feeling slight resistance, like someone was pressed against it. Steve could open it anyway, but he was pretty sure it was either Tony or Stephen resting against the door, and he didnât want to send them flying into the opposite wall by shoving the door open. âThe patrol passed.â
There was an annoyed noise at that, but it was only a few moments later that the door was opening.
Steve stepped out, brow furrowing a little as he took Tony and Stephen in. It looked like the two of them had been the ones to end up in the closet, not Steve. They both looked a little rumpled, almost as though theyâd⌠âSeriously?â Steve asked as the most obvious explanation hit him. âDid you two make me wait in the closet while you made out?â
Tonyâs expression was perfect feigned innocence. âSteve, weâre on a recon mission. I treat those very seriously. We had to make sure the coast was really clear before we let you out.â
Steve gave Tony his best exasperated look. âRight.â
âIt had to look genuine,â Stephen added, adjusting his shirt slightly so it didnât look quite so rumpled. âLike Tony and I really had gotten lost in our⌠passion-fueled wanderings.âÂ
âWhy was I the one who ended up shoved in the closet anyway?â he asked.
Tony smirked. âJealous?â he teased. âWhich one of us did you want to be making out with?â
Steve spluttered. âWhat? No! Thatâs notâ I didnât meanââ He covered his eyes with his hand, feeling a heavy blush staining his cheeks.
âI didnât think either of us were your type, but if youâre looking for a three wayâŚâ He waggled his eyebrows lasciviously.
âStop,â Steve pleaded, because Tony was never going to let this go, and the moment the rest of the Avengers found out, Steve would never live the question down. He shuddered at the thought of Sam and Buckyâs teasing. âWhat happened to taking recon missions seriously?â
Stephen laughed, nudging Tony gently. âWe should finish,â he said. âThen you and I can go back to the Sanctum to⌠practice our diversion skills.â Never had those words sounded so loaded with innuendo. It was probably for the best that the two of them hadnât ended up in the closet, Steve realized, because Steve didnât want to know what darkness and very, very close quarters would have led to. âWhile we got the job done, I think we can do better next time.â
Steve made a mental note to make sure that he was not the one who got sent with these two the ânext timeâ. Who knew how long heâd be stuck in a closet while they made sure the coast was clear.
More of the vigilante!Strange, please?

I loved it!
Sequel to this one.
Well, this was infuriating. After all that work trying to find the strange magic do-gooder, and the strange magic do-gooder found him. Or rather, the strange magic do-gooder saved him. Not that Tony couldnât save himself. He totally could have, even if heâd still been trying to figure out how in the world to deal with the hundreds of little fairy type things that were annoyingly hard to hit with a repulsor blast without causing more damage to the things around the fairy things.
Still, never let it be said that Tony couldnât take an advantage of an opportunity. He caught the manâs elbow, before the man could vanish. âSo,â he said. âWho are you? What the hell was up with the fairies? And can you please explain how your cloak became sentient?â He hadnât realized that from the footage heâd had of the man, but the Cloak that had been in most of the footage had oodles of personality that really couldnât be simulated.
For some reason, that last question seemed to be what actually made the man stop and look at him.
âOf all your questions, thatâs one of them?â
Tony shrugged. âIt is clearly a very remarkable cloak.â The cloak preened at that, which totally proved Tonyâs point, that sort of preening was very real. âIf Iâm going to thank youââ which he was still on the fence about, yes he was grateful for the assistance, but this man had been aggravating Tony for months which put a damper on that gratitude, ââthen I need to thank the cloak, too.â
The cloak poked the man in the cheek, preening some more. Tony was pretty sure he was putting himself in the Cloakâs good books, which⌠not something heâd thought heâd be saying today, but it was an almost pleasant addition to the aggravation of the situation.
It made the man smile, which Tony noted with aggravation was entirely attractive. He was not allowed to find this man attractive until heâd verified whether this man was trustworthy.
The man sighed. âMy name is Doctor Stephen Strange. They were pixies, not fairies, and they snuck into our dimension from a crack in reality.â That answer had opened so many more questions than Tony wanted it to. âAnd as for the CloakâŚâ Strange paused. âWell, actually, I donât know how the Cloak came to be.â He tilted his head to look at the lapels near his cheeks. âHow did you come to be sentient?â
The Cloak radiated smug wouldnât you like to know in a way that was truly remarkable from a piece of fabric.
âNow, if thatâs allâŚâ
âIt is absolutely not all,â Tony protested. âI have so many questions.â He could tell the man wasnât interested in answering them, so Tony turned to his new friend. He looked at the Cloak. âI have some very quality laundry detergent and fabric conditioner,â he said. âI will spoil you with all of them if you convince Strange here to answer my questions.â
The cloak straightened, clearly excited.
Strange looked horrified that Tony had just recruited his Cloak to work against his attempts to be mysterious.
Too bad for Strange that Tony was great at making friends with unusual sentients. Tony was absolutely going to get his questions answered.
Tony didnât know what to do as Stephen shook in Tonyâs arms, like Tonyâs embrace was the only thing keeping him from falling apart. None of what had happened in the last few minutes had gone as Tony had expected when heâd finally bit the bullet to end his and Stephenâs relationship.
âPlease,â Stephen whispered. âIt wasnât me. I swear. It wasnât me.â The words made no sense, and yet the way Stephen said them, they felt terrifyingly real. But what the hell did that even mean? âDonât leave me. Please, Tony, donât leave me.â
Tony didnât know how to respond to that. âOkay,â he said quietly. âIâm not leaving.â For now, at least. Because he loved Stephen. But he couldnât stay in a relationship where Stephen didnât love him back. The last few months had been agonizing, Stephenâs subtle disinterest cutting into Tony more and more each day.
Except now Stephen was shaking in his arms, desperate for Tony not to leave.
âIt wasnât me,â Stephen whispered again.
What the hell did that even mean? âWhat wasnât you?â he asked.Â
âHeâs been in my head,â Stephen said, choking on the words. âHeâs been controlling me. He was me, but not me. A different Stephen Strange.â
Unease trickled down Tonyâs back. âStephen, I think we need to get you to the hospital.â It hadnât looked like Stephen had had a seizure and Tony didnât think Stephen was experiencing a break in reality. But what the hell did that even mean? A different Stephen Strange controlling him?
And if Stephen had seemed so different the last eight months⌠then there were rational reasons for that. Right? Not possession from some alternate Stephen Strange from somewhere.
âI donât need the hospital,â Stephen snapped, then flinched, burying his face into the crook of Tonyâs neck and one hand clutching at Tonyâs shirt in a way that screamed âsorry, sorry, donât leave meâ. Tony didnât intend to, even if nothing made sense right now.
âAll right,â Tony said after a moment. Heâd keep an eye on Stephen, and if there were any other signs that something was wrong, heâd press the hospital issue. âNo hospital, butââ
âYouâre supposed to be a multiversal truther,â Stephen said, but the words werenât teasing the way they were when he listened to Tony rant about close-minded idiots who said that just because they couldnât prove the multiverse was real right now, didnât mean theyâd never be able to. No, Stephen sounded dead serious. âHe was me, from somewhere else, and he had⌠he had magic. He took me over. And I couldnâtâŚâ Stephen took a deep breath. âI wasnât strong enough to evict him. But you were going to leave me. You were⌠I couldnât, Tony. I couldnât lose you.â
Tonyâs breath caught in his chest at the implications. The multiverse and the magic werenât even as startling as the implication that Stephen had fought so hard to get rid of the other Stephenâbecause that was what Stephen was claiming happened, right?âbecause of Tony. If all of it was true.
If.
It wasn't that Tony didn't believe Stephen, it all just seemed so... impossible.
Stephen seemed to recognize Tonyâs hesitation in Tonyâs silence, because he pulled back just slightly so he could meet Tonyâs eyes, even if the hand clutching Tonyâs shirt didnât loosen in the slightest. âI know it sounds impossible. Unbelievable. But itâs true.â He licked his lips. âAnd I think I can prove it.â
It's been a hot minute, but I'd love to have more in the Pen Pal AU!
I had to dig through your Tumblr all the way to November 4, but I found the most recent Pen Pal AU ficlet: https://www.tumblr.com/airas-story/799336335106260992/pen-pal-for-the-drabbles
Oh wow. It's been a while for this one! Sequel to one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, and sixteen.
Tony kept his expression genial and open, doing his absolute best to keep his amusement from showing too visibly as several of the nurses at the desk quizzed him while trying to pretend they werenât quizzing him. He was trying to make a good impression on Stephenâs coworkers. Stephenâs position in the hospital was important to him, and while Stephen would claim fiercely that he didnât need anyoneâs approval, it would make Stephenâs life easier if people werenât judging him for dating Tony of all people.
So far, it seemed to be going well.
Which was good. Stephen had already made a good impression on Pepper, so Tony needed to start doing his part on making a good impression on Stephenâs side of the equation.
âDoctor Strange will be coming out of surgery soon,â Jessica told him, giving him a smile that was just a little flirty. Tony didnât take it seriously, it was pretty clear to him that Jessica was like him in that way, flirtation came as easily as breathing to them. Sheâd made it clear, in that subtle way that Tony had learned to do himself, of making it clear it was all in good fun and not with intent. âI can page him down here once heâs scrubbed out.â
âThat would be great, althoughâŚâ He leaned in. âI donât suppose youâll help me with a bit of an inside joke?â
Jessica mirrored him by leaning in herself. âOf course,â she said, eyes glinting with excitement. âWhat do you need me to do?â
âWell, first, donât tell Stephen just why heâs being paged down here, after that⌠I just need you to give him a thing. Or two.â
Jessica got on board quickly, the other nurses at the desk joining in, and the moment their lookouts informed them Stephen was about there, every single one of the nurses was practically shooing Tony away.
Tony slid behind a corner, something soft and warm settling in his chest as he watched Stephen stride down the hallway, clearly in his element. Tony had read Stephen talk about medicine since theyâd been twelve, when Stephen had decided that he was going to become a doctor. Stephen had never once wavered in that, had only grown into the role.
For years, Tony had read about all of those things Stephen loved about medicine, and Tony had done everything he could to learn about medicine himself so he could be the conversational partner Stephen wanted and needed. The awards gala he and Stephen had first gone to had given Tony the opportunity to Stephen shine, a rising star in the field, but even that hadnât been like this: Stephen utterly in his element. Tony wished that he could actually see Stephen in the operating room, because if Stephen looked so utterly confident here, how would he look with a scalpel in his hand?
âDoctor Strange,â Nurse Jessica said, smiling sunnily at him. âA letter came in for you.â
Stephen looked somewhat confused at that. âA letter? Here?â
âSeveral, actually,â Nurse Alana said, something a little like a smirk on her face. âHere.â She slid a whole pile of letters that Tony had provided them across the counter for Stephen to take. âYou should open them now.â
Stephen clearly recognized Tonyâs handwriting, and it looked like he couldnât decide whether to be worried or amused at a bunch of letters arriving for him here of all places. He also looked like he was trying to decide whether or not he wanted to actually open the letters here or take them to his office.Â
âThey came with instructions to open them here,â Nurse Taylor asked, sounding deceptively hopeful that Stephen would give in.
Finally, Stephen opened the first letter, skimming over the few lines of Tony rambling about something nonsensical, doing the same thing for the next fives, looking more amused with each letter at Tonyâs inane ramblings. Tony barely even remembered what heâd wrote in each letter. Though none was more than three sentences long. Stephen looked progressively more amused and fond as he kept reading.
As Stephen started opening the final letter, Tony slipped out from behind his corner and toward Stephen, watching as the nurses tried to shift so Stephen wouldnât notice him. Of course, Stephen was tall enough that if he actually looked up heâd see Tony immediately.
He didnât look up, though. Not until he actually read the letter.
The letter that had been on the bottom of the pile, that only had two words: Look up.
Thankfully, Tony was in place when Stephen did. âHey Stephen.â He held up the bags of takeout heâd brought with him. âMiss me?â
âAlways,â Stephen said, but he was shaking his head in exasperation. âWere the letters necessary?â
âThey made you smile, didnât they?â Tony pointed out.
Stephen couldnât contest that, though there was no chance of him actually admitting that, especially while they had an audienceâeven if said audience had already seen Stephen smiling. âYouâre not supposed to be in New York.â
Tony laughed. âHavenât you learned already, that I never do what Iâm supposed to do?â
Stephen arched an eyebrow. âShame. Because I think youâre supposed to be giving me a hello kiss right about now.â
Well, Tony supposed he could do what he was supposed to do⌠just this once.
Stephen: Due to personal reasons I'll be marrying Tony
Tony, looking Stephen up then down: I'm going to allow that.
Thank you for your service đ
ââobviously itâs Tony,â Rhodey was saying as Stephen entered the room where the group was gathering for a movie night.
Wong snorted. Heâd beaten Stephen here, having cared less about sprucing up a bit before the movie night, and it looked like heâd taken that extra time to find some sort of disagreement to engage in. âIâll give you that Tony is audacious, but I assure you, Stephen has him beat by miles.â
âWhat have I beat Tony at?â Stephen asked as he examined the couches and who had set up where andâmore importantlyâwhere heâd have the best chances of getting Tony to sit next to him. Heâd already bribed Wong to sit next to Rhodey, which took out his biggest competition. Stephen had, of course, stacked his odds by bringing sour gummy worms, which Tony had a slightly unhealthy obsession for.
âWho in the group is the most audacious,â Steve informed him. âAnd sorry, Stephen, but itâs going to be Tony.â
Stephen arched an eyebrow at that as he chose his couch. âYou think Tony is more audacious than I am?â he asked, a little amused. He could understand where that assumption was coming from. Because Tony was⌠well, Tony was Tony. Maybe it might have even been trueâthough Stephen suspected heâd always have given Tony a run for his moneyâbut Stephen had had several million timelines to lose any hesitation he might have once had.
âItâs Tony,â Steve said, as though it was explanation enough.
âWhatâs me?â Tony asked as he strolled in.
Stephen turned toward him, smiling. âThe person Iâm marrying,â he said.
âWhat?â came from several directions, the question ranging from please repeat I had to have heard that wrong to utterly baffled you would say something that wild.
Stephen just shrugged, pretending there was nothing odd about the declaration. âDue to personal reasons,â he started, as though clarifying, âIâll be marrying Tony.â
Tony blinked at him for a moment, before giving Stephen a slow, appreciative once over. âIâll allow that,â he decided.
âWait did you just propose to Tony to prove a point?â Rhodey asked, sounding offended on Tonyâs behalf.Â
As Stephen had known it wouldâsomeone would have asked, Rhodey had just gotten there firstâthat made Tony laugh. âYouâre using me to make a point?â he asked. âIs it a good one?â
Stephen shrugged. âThey didnât think I was audacious.â
âSo you decided to prove you were audacious by proposing?â Tony asked, grinning.
Natasha snorted. âI donât think that really counts as a proposal,â she pointed out. âMore a declaration.â
Tony moved over and fell onto the cushion next to Stephen. âI love a man who will go to any lengths to prove a point.â
âSo youâll marry me?â Stephen asked.
Tony answered by shifting a little and then reaching out to pull Stephen in for a kiss.
Stephen really hadnât planned on their first kiss having such an audience, especially when a subpar kiss might mess with Stephenâs chances on getting that wedding. Which meant Stephen didnât let his audience deter him from making it a very good kiss.
When Tony pulled back, he looked very satisfied at Stephenâs efforts. âOh, yeah. We're getting married.â
Stephen smiled at him, victory blooming hot in his chest.
In the background, he heard Wong sigh, clearly exasperated with Stephenâs antics. âI told you. He takes audacious to whole new levels.â
âGood,â Tony said, even though he didnât look away from Stephen. âI like my men audacious.âÂ

Not sure if prompts are still open but if they are can we get a continuation of this one? https://www.tumblr.com/ironstrangeprompts/807048234536157184/prompt-1753-quite-without-meaning-to-stephen?source=share
It wasn't a problem, but for future reference, it's a little easier for me to have the link to the snippet you want a sequel to, rather than the original prompt. Sequel to this one.
Tony stared at the cup of coffee that Stephen had just handed him, knowing without a doubt that it would be delicious when he got around to actually taking a sip, at least if the last time Stephen had made him coffee was any indication.
âYouâre deep in thought today,â Stephen said, tone indicating that Tony could talk to Stephen about anything.
Except Tony wasnât sure if he wanted to talk about it, yet. Or rather, if he wanted to ask the questions that had plagued him the last few days as he tried to figure out what Stephen wanted. He took a sip of his coffee to buy himself some time. The flavor was rich against his tongue, with the perfect balance of sweet and nutty. It was silky smooth and the temperature perfect against his tongue, eliminating the almost ritualistic tongue-burning first sip that he was always too impatient to avoid.
âSeriously, how do you make this coffee so good?â Tony asked. âI am a coffee aficionado and my coffee isnât this good.â
Stephen laughed. âI have a gift.â
Tony narrowed his eyes at Stephen. âAre you using magic?â he asked. For coffee this good, Tony could probably be swayed onto the side of magic if it gave him such a perfect cup of coffee.
âOnly to maintain the temperature,â Stephen said. âAnd thatâs on the cup, not the coffee. I would never feed you something Iâd performed magic on without your consent.â
Well, that was good to know. Even if Tony had to acknowledge heâd already known that Stephen wouldnât do that to anyone. âStriking magic off the list of potential secret ingredients,â Tony acknowledged.
Stephen looked at him consideringly, then seemed to nod to himself. âIf youâll forgive me for being clicheâŚâ
âRisky,â Tony teased. âSome cliches are unforgivable.â
Stephen laughed. âI suspect youâll forgive me this particular cliche.â
âDebatable,â Tony warned, but he doubted Stephen took the risk of Tony not forgiving him very seriously. âBut go ahead, reveal which terrible cliche youâve fallen prey to and what it has to do with your perfect coffee making skills.â
âYou know what they say,â Stephen said, eyes glinting with amusement and something⌠else. âThe best foods are made with love.â
The words took a second to penetrate and Tony nearly dropped his cup of coffee as he felt an entirely unexpected flush of heat cross his cheeks. He opened his mouth to respond but found he didnât know what to say. He closed his mouth.
Stephen just watched him, waiting.
âYouâve been⌠itâs beenâŚâ Tony took a deep breath. âItâs been months,â he said finally. Not the coffee, necessarily, but everything else that Natasha and Steve had pointed out Stephen had been doing and that Tony had been dissecting. âWhy⌠why say it now? Why make the move?â
âIâm not making any moves,â Stephen said. âIâm not saying this with any sort of expectation at all, really. Before now you werenât twisting yourself up in knots to try to understand what was going on between us. I didnât want you getting all twisted up about something I could explain. I love you and I like taking care of you. I intend to keep doing so.â
âEven ifâŚâ
Stephen shook his head. âMy loving you isnât dependent on you loving me, Tony. Of course, if it makes you uncomfortable, thatâs one thing, but so long as thatâs not the caseâŚâ He shrugged as though to express that he didnât see the need for anything to change. âLike I said, this wasnât some grand plan to make you fall in love with me. Iâm not trying to make a move, right now, I just want to put your mind at peace.â
Tony stared at Stephen for a long moment, trying to make sense of any of it.
Stephen loved him.
Stephen wanted to take care of him.
Stephen wasnât going to ask for anything from him.
Stephen didnât expect anything from him.
And that⌠that was something Tony had no idea how to make sense of, except⌠âAnd if I want you to make a move?â
Stephen looked momentarily surprised, but then he smiled. âWell, never let it be said that I canât be adaptable.â
Stephen and Tony fake!dating for a mission. Theyâre just a little too comfortable with each other though.
âShit,â Sam said, leaning back in his chair as they watched the video feed of the security cameras of the cruise ship from the helicarrier, far enough from the cruise ship to be out of sight as long as their retro-reflective panels kept working, ready to be called in if necessary. Not that he thought it would be necessary, Stephen and Tony were both competent on their own. Together? Sam honestly didnât think there was much they couldnât handle. They had worked well together from the start. Watching them? Sam was starting to think there were a lot of things about the two of them that⌠worked well together. âDo they realize?â
Steve gave Sam a confused look while Natasha shook her head. âThey have literally no idea.â
No idea. How could they have no idea? Watching them it just felt so obvious. Stephen and Tony had finagled their way onto this specific couples cruise last minute, and now they were âplayingâ at being deeply in love while they carefully planted a few bugs on a certain select people and in certain select places. Sam had to admit he was impressed, because even watching he hadnât actually seen Tony place any of the bugs, but four had already gone online after being properly set.
Natasha had said Tony was sneakier than he looked, but Sam honestly hadnât believed her. Natasha had also been the one who said that Tony and Stephen could pull off this particular con. Sam hadnât believed that either, not until now.
Steve cleared his throat slightly, clearly looking for an explanation. âWho doesnât know what?â he asked.
Sam waved at the video feed where they were all watching. âThose two. Theyâre in love with each other.â
The look Steve gave him was baffled. âYeah. Thatâs how itâs supposed to look.â
Sam shook his head. âNo man, theyâre in love with each other. And they donât know.â
Steve shook his head. âTheyâre notââ
âNo,â Natasha interrupted. âSamâs right. Theyâre in love with each other and donât know. Why else do you think I said we should send Stephen and Tony?â
âThis is a new terrorist cell working with a disgruntled apprentice who left Kamar-Taj and is using love charms to control people,â Steve reminded them. âStephen handles the magic, Tony gets into the files on this new group.â
Natasha pointed at Steve as though heâd hit the nail on the head. Even though he very much hadnât. âExactly. An apprentice who is using some sort of love charm. Love charms canât work on people who are already in love. I asked Wong about it. Stephen and Tony arenât at risk for getting compromised.â
They all looked at the security feed again. Tony was laughing, head thrown back and the delight obvious on his face even through a security feed. Stephen was watching him smugly, a soft expression on his face. It was that expression that had clued Sam in. Finally. Because that⌠that wasnât something the average person could fake. On the screen Tony stopped laughing, grinning at Stephen and the look in his eyes was⌠well, smitten.
âHuh,â Steve said, tone thoughtful. âAnd they donât know?â
âThey have no idea,â Natasha said. âI was kind of hoping this mission would clue them in. Knowing them, though, theyâre going to convince themselves that theyâre just that good at acting.â
Steve frowned, and Sam could practically see him deciding that they obviously couldnât let that stand.
Sam wasnât sure if that was a good thing or not, because when Steve decided things couldnât stand, he didnât exactly just sit back. He had to do something. Sam almost felt bad for Tony and Stephen, but really⌠it was for the best. And if Steve decided they had to do something about this⌠well, Sam was always up for helping Steve when it was a good cause.
And this? It felt like a good cause.
