Yeah. [It’s easy to lose track of what’s going on in the movie – mostly because it’s super old, but partially because Maria had had more wine than was arguably necessary for a movie on the couch session. But who’s going to stop her? Maybe Nat, if she still lived here. And even though it doesn’t work that way, Maria has now officially lived in this apartment longest and therefor has seniority and therefor can watch 80s movies on the couch at 2AM without question.
She fishes the strawberry out of the bottom of the glass and takes a bite.] Except like, I don’t know anyone alive who wouldn’t turn Parker into a dog if they had the chance. [And that’s probably mean, but Ira of all people knows that there’s not much of a point in putting a magic spell on him anyway. He’s practically there on his own. She thinks about saying it out loud. But that’s definitely mean.] Parker’s a good dog’s name, I think. And besides, he already spends a good chunk of his time with his head in the toilet.
[She offers the oreos to Ira.] I say we should go for it.
[Ira missed these nights with Maria. They still happened, but a lot less frequently than they used to. And that was okay. Ira had stuff to do, girls to hook up with. And Maria had stuff to do, boys to choose. But it felt like eons since they’d sat here and gotten drunk together, watched some dumb show together. Ira always retreated to her room these days and between Parker and Aaron, Maria was over at the boy’s apartment a lot. It was tough ---- juggling two guys. Probably. Ira was always just the third party in infidelity situations: just as guilty but without the aspect of probably being as easily forgiven or thrown away. Either way.]
Wow. You’d turn your own boyfriend into a dog. [Ira takes an oreo, then takes a bite, her smile not having died down even a little. Even with all those negative thoughts, her best friend was being the cutest drunk in the world. She continued with her mouth full of oreo.] I want you to remember this night. [Then, she snatched Maria’s wine glass and took a sip.] Because next time I whole-heartedly insult Parker, I want you to recall how you said he had all the traits of a dog.
[She stuffed the second half of the oreo in her mouth.] Mm ---- where do we get our powers? Should we summon Manon? [Just an allusion to another girls’ night movie favourite of theirs.]

Yaaaay, Ira’s here. [Though drunken and giddy, Maria’s voice slips into what it probably the most contented it’s sounded since everything became this hectic nightmare that it’s been for the last few months. What with the boyfriend and the other boyfriend and the surprise brother and all the things that she is not down to think about right now because Ira is here and Teen Witch is on and there’s a strawberry in her wine.
So she’s content. And warm enough with that happiness to accept this moment for what it is – to not bother with thoughts about tomorrow, or even five minutes from now. She tries, as normally Maria would be concerned over if she’d had too much and if she’s going to get sick in a half hour and if she’s going to be hungover at work tomorrow and if Parker’s going to get pissy over her drinking without him there because he thinks she’s going to cheat on him or something – and oh my god she is cheating on him. And oh my god this is exactly what she’s supposed to not be thinking about.
She takes a long sip of her wine, until the strawberry bumps into her lips.] My PE coach in the eight grade used to call me sunflower. [She says, slowly realizing that she should be horrified by that.] But okay this is the best movie because if you were the teen witch, I would be the old short lady with all the costume chests who helps you when you turn your brother into a dog.
[Maria’s happiness was infectious. Sure, maybe it was drunken happiness, but Ira didn’t think that made it any less real. Especially not here and now. It was nice to see Maria this happy, too. She didn’t know if cause for drinking was good or bad because the girl drank just as much as the rest of them (and maybe sometimes more ---- Parker had rubbed off on her), but either way, Ira would pry later when she was sober. Now maybe wasn’t the time. Though, now maybe was the only time she’d be able to get Maria to talk about the mess that is her love life.] Yes. Celebrate me, for I am here. [She let out a breath as she spoke, readjusting her legs on the couch with Maria’s atop hers.
They both watched the TV for only a few seconds before a random drunken thought popped into Maria’s head and then out loud. And it worried Ira some. That was weird, but nothing really said cause for concern and it wasn’t something she could easily just say. “Hey, did your PE coach get a little too close for comfort?” wasn’t wine talk.
Supposedly, sex in sunflower fields was.] Okay, let’s be honest here: if anyone in this house would turn their brother into a dog, it’d be you. Well, no ---- it’d be Jules, but only because it’s Parker.
[Maria had been half asleep. Or – rather – half-drunk when Cody Lee and Jules had come in. She told Cody Lee to take her bed because this couch belonged to her and she had bunkered down there and no one was going to make her move. Oreos. White wine. An abundance of white chocolate covered strawberries good enough to remind her that the white wine wasn’t doing her any favors, but at least it wasn’t dark chocolate, so it’s pretty much whatever.
It hardly even bothers her that she’s not sure if she put her vibrator back into her nightstand drawer before telling him he could go in there. Why worry about it? Who cares? Teen Witch is on.]
IRAAA. [Okay, three-quarter’s drunk.] IRA TEEN WITCH IS ON. AND THEY’RE ABOUT TO DO IT IN THAT FIELD OF SUNFLOWERS. [Parker and Aaron can probably hear her across the hall. She puts a strawberry in her glass of wine, because that feels like the right choice.]
[Ira had work in the morning. Seriously, she had to work. And no, it wasn’t like her job demanded the most physically or mentally (though talking to assholes that were usually pigs all day wasn’t easy on the psyche), but still, she wanted like a solid six hours before she had to wake up and police the population of customers that were entirely disrespectful about just sticking their dick in something. Discretion was the name of the name and no sleep because Maria couldn’t stop yelling about fucking in sunflowers would not help.
So, at first, Ira angrily rolled out of bed and exited her room, a slow walk because it was her best friend and she wasn’t fuming, but a completely unamused face on. She wanted to say a hundred different things, but she then caught the girl just in time to watch her drop a chocolate covered strawberry into her wine. She remembered when they first met, dropping blueberries into it and mushing them down. They tasted like shit afterward.
With the culmination of that memory and drunken Maria’s decision, she smiled and shook her head.] Jesus, I can’t even be mad at you for waking me up. [She walked the few steps forward to the sofa and held Maria’s feet up, sitting beneath them so she could lay them on her lap.] I could never do that --- the field of sunflowers. There is no such thing as sexy sneezing.
cass-armenta:
[Ira was probably Cass’ favorite person in the group — these people that she’d unwittingly befriended by way of music and spectator infidelity. How she became privy to all of the information that she’d had thrown her way, she had no idea. But she’d grown used to Maria and the Fuckboys: playing live five nights a week. She liked Jules plenty, as well. And somehow Nigel had become a part of the group as well, so it was easier to have a friend around.
But still — she liked Ira best. Maybe because she was the easiest to chill with, or the fact that she’s so detached from all the drama that makes these people a Texan soap opera.
Maybe it’s because she talks more shit about Tongue Ring than even Cass does. All of it factors in, makes it so that when everyone else bails on getting black-out, she’s happily settled at the bar with the other girl — no complaints.
She knocks one back, pretending a little that it doesn’t burn the back of her throat as bad as it does. She’s toker more than a drinker; sometimes it shows.]
I mean, that’s fine, if you wanna like, be a total lightweight about it. Whatever. No judgement.
[God, she's cute. The kind of cute, too, where if she batted her eyelashes, Ira would probably do most anything she asked. She'd draw the line at really murder someone-- depending on who it was. She wasn't too far away from the two guys that had already approached them as if because they were at a bar meant they were both heterosexual and looking for some macho man to take home tonight.
Ira just smiles at her, that inadequate, somewhat snarky smile that means she knows she's gonna take this shot, even if her stomach will probably hate her as much as her head will tomorrow. Hard alcohol doesn't process the way it did when she was twenty.]
This is peer pressure. And I won't do it. ...After this shot. [What was the fun in being there if she couldn't get drunk? She tosses the shot back, makes a slight face, then looks at Cass expectantly, as if she's gonna get some medal or a kiss or some medal for not being a lightweight.] There. There. It's gonna be drinks now, because that fruity shit is delicious. [Sure, all the sugar was a guaranteed hangover, but it was a lot better than this. She was twenty-seven, she didn't have to pretend she liked beer or anything she didn't like anymore. And though, she did like tequila, it was already making her stomach gurgle.] I say we order a few of those, or whatever you want, and then go suck at a game of pool. Unless you're actually good-- then just suck for my benefit.
[Everybody was supposed to come out to the bar, or at least when Cass and Ira made these plans, they were brought up. However, everyone whittled down the numbers one by one until it was just Cass and Ira. And truth be told, she wasn't complaining. It was nice to get away. Maria was her best friend and she cared about Aaron and Parker, despite it all. Jules was cool and Cody Lee was, too, but it was nice to go out and do something with someone that she hadn't known for years-- someone who was related to them because she played drums in their band.
Plus, she liked Cass. She liked how she didn't feed into any of it, how she laughed it off. Ira was always so stressed about everything, so serious about the secrets she kept and it was refreshing to have a friend that could shrug things off.
She also liked the way Cass smiled at her when she didn't hate everything. They had just put down their fourth shot in about five minutes, deciding to get drunk enough that they'd have to take a cab home, or drunk enough that someone gets good at pool.]
If I drink one more shot, I'm gonna puke. Seriously, you've been warned. My stomach cannot handle five shots of tequila in a row.

[She grins at the only voice in the building that she recognizes that doesn’t give her a splitting headache she can feel in her teeth. Half of her wants to believe that the girl figured she was out here because of the smell, and came out to say hi. But then, Cass is one of those generous smokers who tends to smoke people out if they just acknowledge that she’s there and she’s getting high. It’s more fun when there’s someone to be in the clouds with.
And she extends upon that thought, offering the joint to the girl for a second time since they met. Take a hit, pass it back. She knows the drill. But then, Cass would probably let her take a few and not bother to ask for it back for a little while, just because she’s cute.] Did you know that apathy is a documented medical condition that can be treated with organic substances such as these? [With smoke blowing out of her lips in slow puffs that she’d been holding in.] What a world we live in.
[Ira takes the joint as if it's some kind of peace offering and they needed an offering for peace, which is to say, tentatively. It's fun and she enjoys it and she really doesn't give a shit if the blonde is always smoking it, but she wonders if it'll be a stipulation to every time she sees her. Regardless, it's only two out of three times so far (that she knows of), so she puts it to her lips and sucks in, holding it for as long as her lungs will let her before she has to breathe it out. And then she hands it back.
Everyone's got some kind of problem. Better apathy than fucking your best friend's boyfriend, giving up your kid (and consequently worrying that every day when you wakes up, somebody will come knocking on the door and tell you they think you're their mother, your grandmother standing beside him).] I hear you can get happy pills for that. You know, because that weed stuff-- that's bad for you. It's a gateway drug. I mean, next thing you know, I'll catch you smoking meth. You gotta be careful, Ringo. [But only because he was the first pothead drummer she could think of.]
[This has probably been the worst band practice yet. Which is saying a lot because they’ve all be relatively terrible excluding the way they sound when they play music. That’s why she doesn’t bail; they’re actually a pretty good band when they try hard enough. But Cass knows too much and not really enough to fully assess the bullshit situation she’s gotten herself in. She doesn’t want to give a shit. But they played a show and it was good until afterward when sad eyes and the scientist were practically sobbing and making out at the same time and no one else seemed to notice. Especially tongue ring. Does he ever pay attention to anything?
Except now sad eyes is being extra sad and which means being extra moody towards tongue ring and it’s a fucking nightmare. She walks out to the balcony to clear her head. Or, rather, fog it up just a bit before heading back in.]
[It's not like Ira was following her, but as a frequenter of the system the new blonde drummer was using to get away, she was easy to follow. But not like she was following her, just that she was... behind her. And there. There was no real excuse to solidify how creepy it probably seemed, but it was a little better considering she wasn't a male offender. Or something. Considering she wasn't their landlord? Lucky for Cass, she didn't have to deal with it. But, as a woman, chances were she was creeped on way more than she should have been.
When the door opens via Ira's nosiness, the smell instantly hits her and she shuts the door the best she can. It's not boxed in, so it'll fade, but it's distinct. She might have been more worried about being kicked out of the apartment when she cared about the place, like somewhere near the beginning.] So, you got your own greenhouse or a medical condition?
