Rio 2016 French qualifiers
Hereâs a summary of what happened at French nationals: whoâs already qualified and who could be. I calculated everything myself so there might be mistakes but I think everythingâs correct. In pink italics are the 12 smallest margins aka the 12 swimmers (6 men, 6 women) closest to minima. That does not mean they are the swimmers that will be chosen. I just thought it interesting to show this. As for the 200m freestyle, results here donât mean much (JĂ©rĂ©myâs does, but not really Jordanâs and Yannickâs) since Jacques Favre said: âYannick is third but the criteria are open. We will analyze everything and present the best possible team in Rio. It doesnât matter if heâs 2nd or 3rd, what matters is his time. He has one but itâs apparently wrong. Weâll try to find a way, we have to, to give Yannick a correct time. All options are open.â My guess would be replacing his time at nationals with his time at Euros and make a decision then. Weâll see.
Another question I have is: when they say 12 spots, does it mean 12 swimmers or 12 places in races? JĂ©rĂ©my Stravius is already qualified in the 100m freestyle but came very close in the 200m freestyle and 100m butterfly. If heâs chosen for those, does it count as 2 spots or just 1 or none since heâs already in the team anyway? If it meant 12 swimmers who can be presented in several races, it would open more opportunities. JĂ©rĂ©my swam the best 2 qualifiable times but since heâs already in the team, it could mean 2 more spots. Jordan could get one in the 400m freestyle, for example, and Yannick could get the 200m freestyle one without too much fuss about unfairness. It would also give a bigger chance to Jordan Coelho, whoâs very deserving imo. Same for ladies: Charlotte Bonnet and Coralie Balmy are among the 6 swimmers closest to minima but both are already in the team. Then again we donât even know if theyâll choose the 6 closest times or just swimmers they consider close enough⊠And will they make use of the 12 spots? âUp to 6 women and 6 menâ means they can choose to bring in less than 6, considering how few swimmers reached FINA olympic minima anyway.

Note: I have only included the first and second swimmers of each race when they were within olympic minima.
If 12 spots mean 12 swimmers, regardless of how many races they take part in, they can basically bring everyone who reached olympic minima. Only 8 women did and 2 are directly qualified. 10 men did (excluding Yannick for now; Iâll explain why later) and 4 are directly qualified. 6 qualifiable women, 6 qualifiable men. So it will really depend on the meaning of 12 spots.
A first list will come out on Wednesday. I donât see how they can, following their own rules, put Yannick Agnel in it. If/when they do âfind a wayâ to add him later, will it be as one of the 12 spots (in which case one other man wouldnât be brought in, probably Nicolas DâOriano whoâs quite far from French minima) or as another extra swimmer since thereâs nothing for that situation in the rules anyway? According to olympic rules, each country can bring up to 26 women and 26 men. With 6 already qualified swimmers + 12 extra choices + relay-only swimmers, France would still be far from those 26+26. Adding a swimmer would be within the olympic rules.
Basically, France could have spared itself all that trouble and if they end up bringing everyone who reached olympic minima I will laugh/cry/scream hysterically for days.
Thanks for compiling that list. Over at Swimswam some of the readersâ comments in the last few days made it sound that if a swimmer made the french minima in at least one event they can swim additional events if they made the Fina A standard. And then they wouldnât count towards the 12 spots. I hope they do it that way. But after all this drama this past week this solution almost seems too easy.

If you look at the videos, you see he arrives surprisingly slowly so itâs possible the pad didnât register his touch at the right time. The same thing happened to him in the morning - in a different lane. So either heâs incredibly unlucky and the pads in his lanes happened to fuck up twice in the same day, either thereâs something wrong with the way he touches. That doesnât explain why the manual clock didnât give a conclusive answer, of course; but if the gap is small⊠Itâs crazy this is even happening. I donât think weâll ever understand. It should be noted that none of the angles we have are positioned in the middle of the pool - all are closer to Yannick - so perspective favors him. Which doesnât say he shouldnât be second, but we have no elements that make us believe beyond any doubt that he should be.
Controversy aside, thereâs one thing that seems to be overlooked a lot - whether he was second or third, he was quite slow and far from his PB. France has set ridiculous minima, we know that. But they can only pick 6 men and 6 women who havenât reached them while making olympic ones. Even if he had been second, should he have been given one of those 6 spots? Only 2 men (Stravius and Mignon on 100free) have qualified for Rio so far. If Manaudou was to miss minima in the 50free (he got them in 100free but arrived 3rd, so no qualification), heâd most likely take a spot. Joly and Coelho have already put in great performances and should imo be considered. If Lacourt fails his minima, or Perez-Dortona⊠Six spots isnât a lot. Should one of them be given to someone who, as much as I love him, doesnât seem in good shape and hasnât been in good shape for some time? Or should they be kept for the winners of races who didnât immediately qualify, or at least for 2nd-place finishers that were closer to minima? My honest opinion is that only Jeremy should get a spot in the 200free. Regardless of whoâs second and whoâs third, I donât think either Pothain or Yannick were good enough.
Iâm a huge Yannick fan so iâm probably at least slightly biased when it comes to all of this. To me it looked like he placed second. I already thought so while watching the live stream that evening and felt like something was wrong when they showed him in third. Right now one can say that it doesnât matter anyway because he hasnât reached the minima the french fed set out. But since they can still pick 6 men from the first and second place finishers it does matter. And i feel for both Yannick and Jordan.
And here comes the moment that shows what a mess this whole event is. the minima the french fed set are ridiculous. That has been stated more than once. I get it that a federation wants to set to their own minima and not just take the fina standard to make sure their swimmers can meet certain expectations in Rio. But than you have to be either totally uncompromising and say if you miss the minima you wonât compete at the Olympics or you have to have more than one competition where swimmers can set a time. Because otherwise how can you ensure a fair selection when the federation picks these 6 men and women? I mean how do you decide how close is close enough to the minima to get picked? Does reputation and past results matter? There are just to many varibales. And it puts the french federation in a bad light. But now they have to resolve the mess they created.
I love Yannick, we swam for the same team when he was still in Nice so he has definitely always been a favorite of mine and someone I appreciate in and out of the pool. But I do think it very much matters that he hasnât been swimming very well for a while. I think it should be taken into account and itâll all depend on how many swimmers manage to reach the minima straightaway and therefore how many swimmers fight for those 6 spots. If there are many of the latter, Iâd rather see, say, someone like Jordan Coelho (200fly) who is regularly improving, swam only 0.02 from his PB and could step up in the next couple years, than Yannick who just isnât doing well lately. Itâs not because I donât like him - simply, as it is right now, I donât think heâs among the most deserving of a spot in Rio. Of course the huge problem with those French minima is that swimmers are expected to be in âolympicâ shape⊠months before the Olympics. But that, alas, cannot be changed. As for the 2nd/3rd debate, the question isnât whether he arrived 2nd (he obviously did) but whether he touched 2nd. That is what cannot be proven (because the perspective in video doesnât allow a clear answer and the difference between the pad and the manual clock was not considered sufficient), and whatâs causing this mess. Rugby fans are familiar with that situation with âtry or no tryâ - we canât prove you didnât score, but we canât prove you did. Itâs the same here with Yannick: they canât prove he did not finish second, but they canât prove he did either.
But Jordan Pothain has said if he was picked, he would step down and give Yannick his spot if asked: would that be possible? Besides, Jacques Favre has said âFor now the result stands. There is a time but itâs supposedly not correct. We will analyze everything and present the best possible team in Rioâ Hm. Does that sound like âweâll find a way to include Yannick if we want toâ or is it just me?

I canât seem to get my hands on the document right now but itâs supposed to be a matter of percentage between the French minima and the actual time swimmers got. Supposedly the smaller that percentage is, the higher your chance to get called up. Anna Santamans, for example, is pretty certain to make the cut in the 50free because she swam 0.02 from the minima, so the percentage will be very small. A first squad should be announced next Wednesday. This federation being the mess it is, who fucking knows what theyâll do, maybe they wonât even follow their own rules, we just donât know.

1. Qualifying event
French nationals in Montpellier (March 29th-April 3rd 2016).
2. Rules for qualification in individual events
The olympic selection can include a maximum of two swimmers per individual event, limited to 26 female swimmers and 26 male swimmers.
2.1. First step
2.1.1. The first two of each event will be qualified if they reach French minima during their final.
2.1.2. For events ranked by time (ex. 1500free), the two swimmers with the best times will be qualified if they reach French minima.
2.1.3. In case of equality between swimmers for point 2.1.1., the swimmer who swam faster in the series will be qualified.
2.1.4. In case of equality between swimmers for point 2.1.2., the swimmer who swims faster in that event at the European championships will be qualified.
2.2. Second step
2.2.1. At the end of French nationals, the federation can pick more swimmers at the following conditions:
2.2.1.1. Having reached olympic minima.
2.2.1.2. The choices for this list will be made based on a percentage that will show the swimmers closest to French minima.
2.2.1.3. In any case, this list cannot exceed 6 female swimmers and 6 male swimmers.
Even though I love Yannick and want him to do well, I donât want him to get the 200free individual spot simply because of who he is or past results. That probably came of wrong. Â But there are still a few months till Rio so there is still time to get better. Â French nationals are so early. And that goes for all the swimmers that have been pretty close to the minima. Â I know with the way Yannick has been swimming the past couple years that him defending his title is unlikely. He looks pretty exhausted right now. Â And I think it is not just because of the toll this week has taken. Â So who knows how much better he can get.
If it werenât for the whole 2nd/3rd fiasco and Yannick had simply finished 3rd I wouldnât even have this discussion. But since the result is at least slightly questionable and caused quite a stir the federation has to find a solution that is fair to both Jordan and Yannick. With the Jacques Favre quote you posted it does sound like the federation can bend the rules the way they like. Which is bothersome but not surprising.
As it stands right now both Yannick and Jordan missed the minima. The solution that would seem fair to me is to have them fight it out in the pool. Give them and a few other swimmers who missed the minima and are not part of the chosen 6 the chance to set the time at a meet a little closer to the Olympics. Maybe the European Championships or something. If they miss the time at this meet then itâs over. Â But it seems unlikely that the federation will go that way. So will have to wait tonight to see how many swimmers have qualified outright and then see what they make of it.
