Scientific America Asks Prominent Scientists for Their Response to the Election of Trump
~ With the election of Donald Trump to the American Presidency, Scientific America Magazine reached out to some the sciences top minds for their take on the potential idiocracy ahead of us. Their responses varied. Ethologist, Richard Dawkins has asked New Zealand to offer American and British scientists asylum in the wake of Trump and Brexit and the advancement of willful ignorance. He thinks it could be a boon to their culture. They didn’t all have such a reactionary perspective. Michael Snyder, professor of genetics, Stanford University School of Medicine had a more hopeful perspective, saying,
Advancement of science transcends partisan boundaries and is fundamental for human health, and is a bedrock for U.S. technological advances and the economy. Hopefully, this will continue under any new administration. Although there is a rise in nationalism around the world, I think it is important that the international openness of science, its collaborations and its benefits be maintained for the benefit of all.
Let’s all hope Snyder is optimism is well placed.
