little by little coming back
talking to college students to help mentor him
learned you can’t get someone to do the work for you
turns abstraction of college into more ways
taught him how to take opportunity

assumes that we all start life on an equal plain
won’t make much progress if we keep this mindset
must be given preparation
not that we create ourselves as backward individuals
caught in spiral and get trapped
can’t look authority figure in the eyes
in America, must look in eyes
when there’s hopelessness
people often don’t care
 not ready until we set up conditions
out on the streets because their basic human needs aren’t met
thought he may be disrespectful
change society by thinking this way
feeling the peoples feeling
agree with a sentiment or opinion
when the parent fails the child, state provides protection instead
created a more civil and fair way of treating children
kids who got in trouble treated in fairly humane way
1960s to Now: Change in Treating Children
rather in need of guidance
system of holding them accountable
harshly punishing children
system of punishment spilled over into other institutions
kids on the outside still encountering harsh conditions
Positive vs. Negative Credentials
may grow up the opposite to recieve negative credentials
dignity enhancement as crime suppression
searching for better life
probation officers can search you or others involved
restore people back in community i they’ve broken a law
include them again in the community
