Cheers to the 2016 year! I am excited to be taking Richard Ross’s “Social Engagement” class under UCSB’s Art Department. I feel privileged to be in his last class since this is the last time he will be teaching this course.

Exactly one year ago I took ART 19 - Introduction to Photography that opened my eyes to the possibilities and opportunities I could pursue with this career path. I am looking forward to taking my third art class here at UCSB!

Recap Essay on Guest Lecturer

Our guest lecturer began his talk by connecting with us students since he recently graduated from UCSB last year. He even took ART 19 his last quarter because apparently he received a D in the class when he took it initially. From what I assume and heard from the lecture, it sounds like he was an art major. I was confused because I would think that being an art major he would have some visual and aesthetic sense.

Perhaps he did not know the technical aspects of photography, like me. I have thoroughly enjoyed this course because I had to force myself to learn such terms and settings like aperture, exposure, ISO, autofocus, manual, focal length, shutter speed, RAW, JPEG, TIFF, and so on. The prompts made me think of concepts that applied to my own life that could speak on a larger scale. I wish I could take this course again next quarter, but unfortunately I have class during the same time. I hope to continue pursuing the Art Minor throughout my next four years here.

The guest lecturer offered his take on myths and how we yearn to believe in it rather than figuring out how or why it was made. He quoted such people like Shakespeare and his beautiful model friend, Becca Weston. He also referenced numerous artists that were influenced by such ideas as myths, abstractions, and apocryphals. Not only did he reference artists, he also referenced a big-time baseball player. He spoke of peoples’ inability to place the player into a specific category like the “natural,” “jerk,” “bush leaguer,” “guy who piles up stats but can’t win,” “disgraced athlete,” and the “comeback story” due to his ephemeral nature. The professional baseball player constantly went from stage to stage and no one could predict where he would head next.

After sometime he went on to talk about what our projects dealt with: myths. He coined the term “myth” as one that contains threefold aspects: “reality,” “unknown myth,” and “known mental models.” He showed various diagrams that ranged from a triangle of the three interconnected and equal while others were disjointed and out of proportion from one another. Overall, he accomplished believable arguments and points about life, people, and of course photography.
