@visionhcld — upholding my promise — you wanted unhinged in media res? welp. here you go
“She is a creature of ash.” A ridge suddenly juts from his cheekbones, his face warping as carapace distorts the features of his teenaged form in a rippling wave of crimson that disappears as soon as it comes, and the sharp points of claws dig into Zhongli’s face.
“She leaves either gems or charcoal in her wake and while I take no issue with her results, she cannot take my family.”
The ice beneath their feet trembles with a fleeting, shivering whisper as he speaks those last words, the world falling dead silent.
Then, the glacier explodes upwards.
Ice stars space glass rocket up around them in slices of frozen life, each cold sliver a memory, an emotion, each cutting to the bone with the ease of an obsidian scalpel. Each gash changes his appearance whether to match that memory or not — young, scarred, regal, foul: a kaleidoscope of all he is and has ever been.
[ A baby’s laughter, little fingers curling around his own as he dances around the kitchen table and sings them a fishers’ shanty— ]
[ The ring of sword-steel as the Traveler parries his blade, a hasty shield of geo around their sword blunting the electric edge of his halberd, their instinctive elegance in changing their elemental attunement honing the edge of his drive to win— ]
[ Zhongli’s shirt beneath the iron trap of his hand as he snarls in the god’s face and demands recompense, recognition— ]
[ The Tsaritsa’s chill lancing bone-deep — love, anger, pain, surety, righteousness — and with that touch he knows that every step he takes is laced with frost— ]
“I cannot regret. I must not. And so the reality in which she lingers and the dream in which she burns must coexist, in which she has the necessity, the right...”
His claws dig with that word into the delicate skin behind Zhongli’s jaw and in constellation points down his throat and oh, the blissful ease that rips forth viscous golden ichor is simply divine. His jaw parts as his tongue roils and twists, abyssal need wholly in tandem with the holy yet human desire too greedy to let a taste pass.
“I burn. Beneath the necessity of conceding to Her plan, I burn.” Teeth graze delicate skin, and yet with the latest gash the rest of him is all too human. “My peers call me a fool in truth, that I cannot see the machinations happening around me.
“Gods. Stars. Better would it be that I did not. Better would it be that I was simply an ignoramus who knew no different.” His fingers flex, now claw-less, though their blunt tips still dig into that sturdy throat. Shards of ice cascade up around them and with each cutting incision he has his crystal extrusions, then not, his horns, his human skin, his carapace, his eyes, his body warping and honing in ways he does not even understand yet as the mirrors of possibility refract around them, past and present and future and all the threads of worlds he saw as he fell that will never come to pass.
“They need no threat to keep me in line. Do they not understand? Do none of them understand? Do you? Does She?” A snarl, blunt-teethed, but crystalline spars lash behind him in fury and channel electricity along his spine.
“I am a man of my word.”
