This video illustrates free fall and how if you aim a gun at an object and fire at the same instant that object is dropped, the bullet will still hit the object because gravity is affecting the object and the bullet at the same rate. 

The picture below shows two balls dropped at the same time. The green ball is thrown sideways, and the blue ball is dropped straight down. Despite this, we see that they hit the ground at the exact same time
