So says veteran rocker Neil Young. That sounds radical, but then again he has quite a few creative ideas for media and entertainment companies to rethink their approach to the brave new digital media world, like creating high-end audio products to counter the lower quality products available via current channels (legal and otherwise).

Netflix announced that it streamed a total of 2 billion hours of video in 4Q 2011. That equates to roughly 100 hours for each of the company's 20 million streaming customers. These sound like huge numbers (and remind us of the old signs outside McDonalds restaurants). But because Netflix has never before released streaming totals, it is hard to understand the significance.

"This of course is bad news ... because it means that more traffic is coming and they need to invest to stay ahead of the curve."

Album sales in the U.S. increased by 3% in 2011, the first positive gain since 2004, according to this report. This is good news for content owners and publishers. And Louis CK's "experiment" (our take here) suggests that consumers may be fully adapting to digital sales models.

What to look for in social media in 2012? This analyst says more social sharing  directly linked to e-commerce and Web-based transactions, and greater interaction between social channels and television (like X Factor voting via Twitter).

Mobile devices account for 10 percent of the time spent with various forms of media but only enjoys 0.9 percent of the advertising dollars spent across the various forms of media. Newspapers and magazines receive a greater share of ad dollars compared to time spent, while TV, Internet, and radio ad spending is about in line with usage.

Pandora can target display, audio and video political ads to consumers based on their zip code location, according to this report. That would allow campaigns to buy specific congressional districts, as opposed to entire metro areas or media markets. Online ads will make up a small portion of the total spend for elections in 2012, which is projected to total $4 billion. 

Meanwhile, Google and Samsung are still talking about launching a new "smart TV" next year.

The launch was modest, according to this report, with only 20 advertisers participating. The system is targeted at small and mid-sized businesses. Electronic payments are built in. eMarketer believes self-serve is critical for Twitter to meet its projected target of $139.5 million in ad revenue in 2011.

Hard to argue with that point of view, but there is plenty of skepticism about market reaction.
