Absolutely. Because you’re prioritizing your comfort over the immense tragedy that occurred tonight, making it all about you and your momentary discomfort, rather than seeing the larger picture for what it is. Be depressed. Be upset. Be livid. You should be feeling emotional over this because it’s wrong and a period of mourning. You don’t say at a funeral ‘Yeah I don’t really want to hear the eulogy because I’m uncomfortable someone is dead’. You show up, you deal with the crying, and you show your support even though you don’t understand the other person’s pain.
I’m just curious about that.
You want people to feel something for what happened — because it was horrible, disgusting, and a very clear show on one of the myriad problems with this country and world as a whole — even if it will adversely affect some who had no part in this act, and who may even sympathize with you.
How is that helping anything?
You’re shoving your emotions at people who might very well care about the problem, but you’re doing it in a way that does not incur sympathy to what you’re feeling.
Just because some people are choosing their mental and/or emotional stability at the moment over this, does not give you the right to lump them in with the people who are breeding hate with hate.
Today. Is. Not. About. You. Today is not about you. Today, this one day, is not about you or your problems. Today is not about what makes you mildly uncomfortable for the 0.5 seconds you have to hear about black issues. You can walk away, you can turn off the computer, you can block me, you can unfollow me, you could scroll down - but instead, you make it all about you, because you’re so obsessed with being treated as precious when a young, innocent black man lays in the cold ground.
Why the fuck would anyone have any obligation to make this issue palatable to you, when it has nothing to do with you or your comfort? Feelings of hatred and sadness today are completely valid. Equating the hatred the oppressed feel to the mild annoyance of their oppressors is the most shitty thing you can do. They are not the same, not even by a long shot. "Hatred" towards black people gets them killed and their killers walk free, "Hatred’ towards white people means mild annoyance and a whiny tumblr posts about how uncomfortable you feel discussing black issues. Balanced, right?
No. It is not about me.
Lives have been lost because of humanity’s inability to coexist. It’s happened since we first took breath on this doomed planet, it’s still happening today, and it will continue to happen.
Mourn the lives that were cut short.
Curse the people who failed to do what was right.
Be angry, be sad, be frustrated, lose or rally whatever hope you have for humanity while things like this still happen in the world.
That is your life to decide, you get the say in that.
You do not get to say what another does with their life.
Ignore you, argue with you, or fight alongside you — no matter a person’s race, they can choose to do either. And if you want to get angry about another’s right to their opinion or view on the matter, or how they handle it, that is your choice.
Walking away from tumblr for one night is not going to erase the issue.
No, I don’t understand black issues, or what they have to deal with. I simply can’t. I’m not black. I’ve never been in any sort of situation like that. I might not understand, but I still sympathize. You can throw whatever you want at me, I honestly don’t care. Call me a self-centered, ignorant racist. I will still sympathize.
I might disagree with how you’re going about some of it, but that does not change the fact that a very blatant wrong was committed tonight.
If you don't understand black issues, try not talking over them. Better yet, try not putting your mental illness over them in their time in the spotlight.
I have severe anxiety. I've been to the hospital for panic attacks. I've had my heart rate soar to 200bpm, so my disorder easily can threaten my life if it gets out of control. I know what a 'trigger' is outside the context of being mildly disquieted by white guilt.
As a white person during this time, the only thing anyone is asking you to do is not pretend the issue isn't there. Don't ask people to tag their posts of Ferguson so you can go back to Disney RP. Let black people have their platform and do not take it away from them. Listen to their sorrows, even if it makes you uncomfortable, because it should make you uncomfortable.
There is an obvious difference if you have a mental disorder so severe you can't function - but maybe ask yourself, if your anxiety/depression is triggered by the mere discussion of black issues... then what are you feeling anxious for, exactly?

You know what’s bullshit? I can turn all this off. I can get off tumblr, turn off the news, maybe play some Pokemon and this could all fade into the background for me. if you're uncomfortable with Ferguson coverage and you're not black, it's probably because you're racist and you're exercising your privilege not to care.
It's not enough just to say 'I don't think the decision was right' and then go back to your normal lives like you're fucking guiltless, like you're not part of the problem, like your apathy isn't indicative of what kind of dismissive person you are.
