Vasil Ivanov Kunchev, better known as Vasil Levksi (Vasil the Lionlike) aka the Apostle of Freedom, is the national Bulgarian hero. Starting off as a monk, he soon gave up his holy title to peruse the cause of liberating his nation from the 5 centuries of Ottoman slavery. And, let me tell you, this man was amazing. He had outstanding intelligence - being the founder of the Internal Bulgarian Revolutionary Organization, he set up secret networks of committees all over the country, preparing for a huge uprising and envisioning a pure and sacred republic with ethnic and religious equality. It goes without saying that he was constantly being chased down by the Ottoman empire, but the man managed to escape them through the art of disguise. He was known to be able to impersonate anyone and change his outlook entirely by even resorting to dyeing his hair, speaking in foreign tongues (was fluent in 3), forging his documents and going under various names in order to avoid capture. It is unknown exactly how many pseudonyms the guy had, but they were definitely over 40.
Speaking of appearances, hot damn! Levski is actually widely recognized as one of the most attractive men of his time, described as having golden locks and penetrating grey-blueish eyes. I mean, smart and handsome!? Witchcraft!
It’s very sad that a person of this caliber ended as he did… he was at last tracked down by the police after being betrayed by some of his own. Levski was taken to trial in the capital Sofia on 4th January 1872, whereon he confessed to his identity, but refused to reveal anything else about the existence of his organization and it’s members, taking all the blame. He was sentenced to death by hanging, and in the spot where he passed away today stands a monument of remembrance.
