One of my favourite photos from my trip to Warsaw in 2006

Help Ahmad Get Treatment and Surgery to Repair Serious Complication!
While Saja's husband Ahmad has been recovering from his recent surgery, he experienced a serious complication.
Saja contacted me recently to tell me that Ahmad has been taken to the hospital because of a urinary catheter that caused a wound to his bladder. He didn't notice because he has no feeling in his lower body. He lost a lot of blood and some people donated blood so he could regain consciousness. Now he needs bladder surgery. I have asked Saja for more details about the surgery and will add any I get. Please donate and share to help him out!
Also yesterday (Nov 8, 2025) Ahmad contacted me to ask for help for food and other necessities for his children and to cover the treatment he needs. He has told me that his treatment expenses for his bladder are about $350 per week. He also said he will need surgery for his bladder. Please help Ahmad and his family by donating and reblogging!
Saja is vetted by association. Her brother Jaafar is vetted by gazavetters and is #299 on their list. See this post for screenshot of vetting info.

In the past fifty years, fantasy’s greatest sin might be its creation of a bland, invariant, faux-Medieval European backdrop. The problem isn’t that every fantasy novel is set in the same place: pick a given book, and it probably deviates somehow. The problem is that the texture of this place gets everywhere.
What’s texture, specifically? Exactly what Elliot says: material culture. Social space. The textiles people use, the jobs they perform, the crops they harvest, the seasons they expect, even the way they construct their names. Fantasy writing doesn’t usually care much about these details, because it doesn’t usually care much about the little people – laborers, full-time mothers, sharecroppers, so on. (The last two books of Earthsea represent LeGuin’s remarkable attack on this tendency in her own writing.) So the fantasy writer defaults – fills in the tough details with the easiest available solution, and moves back to the world-saving, vengeance-seeking, intrigue-knotting narrative. Availability heuristics kick in, and we get another world of feudal serfs hunting deer and eating grains, of Western name constructions and Western social assumptions. (Husband and wife is not the universal historical norm for family structure, for instance.)
Defaulting is the root of a great many evils. Defaulting happens when we don’t think too much about something we write – a character description, a gender dynamic, a textile on display, the weave of the rug. Absent much thought, automaticity, the brain’s subsconscious autopilot, invokes the easiest available prototype – in the case of a gender dynamic, dad will read the paper, and mom will cut the protagonist’s hair. Or, in the case of worldbuilding, we default to the bland fantasy backdrop we know, and thereby reinforce it. It’s not done out of malice, but it’s still done.
The only way to fight this is by thinking about the little stuff. So: I was quite wrong. You do need to worldbuild pretty hard. Worldbuild against the grain, and worldbuild to challenge. Think about the little stuff. You don’t need to position every rain shadow and align every tectonic plate before you start your short story. But you do need to build a base of historical information that disrupts and overturns your implicit assumptions about how societies ‘ordinarily’ work, what they ‘ordinarily’ eat, who they ‘ordinarily’ sleep with. Remember that your slice of life experience is deeply atypical and selective, filtered through a particular culture with particular norms. If you stick to your easy automatic tendencies, you’ll produce sexist, racist writing – because our culture still has sexist, racist tendencies, tendencies we internalize, tendencies we can now even measure and quantify in a laboratory. And you’ll produce narrow writing, writing that generalizes a particular historical moment, its flavors and tongues, to a fantasy world that should be much broader and more varied. Don’t assume that the world you see around you, its structures and systems, is inevitable.
We... need worldbuilding by Seth Dickinson
Us fandom adults should really just go on strike. 3 months minimum where we don't post fic, we don't comment, we don't buy merch. Then we’ll see how fun the Lego Ninjago community is for anyone under 60 😂
so does that bathrooms movie have a scary monster in it or are they just like chilling

why is it always people who never actually pay attention to the women's game who are so invested in being critical of it? there was an all female refereeing team at the south africa czechia match. the us men's team is always called usmnt because the women's team is more successful and culturally relevant. the adidas world cup ad featured uswnt athlete trinity rodman with the vinicius jr. (brazil) and jude bellingham (england.) the english football media keep interviewing england women's team players with questions about what their mental edge was and advice for how they coped with the pressure given they actually brought football home with euros unlike the men.
women's football has actually never been more relevant during a men's world cup before but sure we have to make our stable of uninformed complaints about integration and self fulfilling prophecies & false statements about its unpopularity. like cmon, first pressure your local pro club to invest in their women's division, or go play rec league in your city which is integrated already.
sometimes there really is a single load bearing piece of information about a blogger that elucidates everything about their whole deal and recently for me it was learning that someone was from jersey. another time it was a prolonged history of concussions

the media can try but i will never fall into the nonsense of criticising black footballers for not being humble lol
common sports media racism tropes:
pace & power (iconic sketch): describe black athletes as dependent entirely on their physical gifts. a way to imply they are neither skilled nor intelligent, and effectively lock them out of leadership positions and post career coaching / analysis roles.
lazy: taking the gifted athlete argument to its conclusion, saying they don't work hard in training or in game. as though any pro athlete isn't incredibly disciplined and the margins for getting replaced aren't incredibly fine. also who fucking cares about training, in game quality is all that matters everyone loved eden hazard.
lifestyle issues: describe black athletes as uniquely irresponsible and distracted by doing normal celebrity things like modeling fashion, featuring on rap music videos, buying houses or partying. this also comes up with a dose of classism in the context of black athletes who may have made it out of the slums or projects.
ungrateful: fans usually want all athletes to be thankful to them, but they want black athletes to never ever challenge this compact even when they break it by racially abusing their own players. its also a way of disciplining players who command power by virtue of their reputation and skills – how dare you, have more power than me, a white person who pays for your career? white fans already feel ownership over their teams, but society tells them that all black people should be even lower than the white athlete you already justified calling wanker. and therefore the black athlete who can negotiate a big contract or have intelligent opinions on political issues you disagree with is ungrateful.
arrogance: it doesn't matter how much respect a black athlete has for his white peers or legends of the game expressed as investment in the history of the sport or outright praise. any semblance of personal confidence, no matter how justified must be stamped out. you can't show any personality by doing fun tricks or celebrating (showing off), you can't say you aim to win (disrespect), you can't let your game do the talking (media deserves respect.) you can never ever win even if you prostrate yourself to the media. you will always be perceived as arrogant for daring to be better than the media's white faves. even if every statistical measure was in your favor ala lewis hamilton, some people will never give you your flowers.
as a regular donor to Gaza Soup Kitchen I get their email updates, and they said today that while they've continued to be able to expand, donations are slowing down as Gaza gets less coverage. If you have a few dollars to spare, I encourage you to send them here to continue the amazing work that Hani and his team are doing.
