People actually would find the wrong definition on personal sites and some sites claiming to be informative. The first incarnation of Therian Guide, for example, leaned into the "having a connection" angle. They had included questions such as "what animal do you feel most connected to?" and "what animal makes you feel an uprising in your chest?" in their theriotype finding section. Basically a game of telephone that made its way to social media over time.
