Hello. I have been reading your blog for a while. It's incredibly beautiful. I want to get a book of Arabian poetry, but I'm afraid I do not know enough to make a sound choice. Could you, please, recommend some of your favorite Arabian poets or books? Thanks you very much in advance.

المدن رائحة: عكا رائحة اليود البحري والبهارات، حيفا رائحة الصنوبر والشراشف المجعلكة، موسكو رائحة الفودكا على الثلج، القاهرة رائحة المانجو والزنجبيل، بيروت رائحة الشمس والبحر والدخان والليمون، باريس رائحة الخبز الطازج والأجبان ومشتقات الفتنة، دمشق رائحة الياسمين والفواكة المجففة، تونس رائحة مسك الليل والملح، الرباط رائحة الحناء والبخور والعسل، وكل مدينة لا تُعرفُ من رائحتها لا يُعوَّل على ذكراها، وللمنافي رائحة مشتركة هي رائحة الحنين إلى ما عداها، رائحة تتذكر رائحة أخرى، رائحة متقطعة الأنفاس، عاطفيّة تقودك كخارطة سياحية كثيرة الاستعمال إلى رائحة المكان الأول، الرائحة ذاكرةٌ وغروب شمس، والغروب هنا توبيخ الجمال للغريب - Cities are smells: Acre is the smell of iodine and spices. Haifa is the smell of pine and wrinkled sheets. Moscow is the smell of vodka on ice. Cairo is the smell of mango and ginger. Beirut is the smell of the sun, sea, smoke, and lemons. Paris is the smell of fresh bread, cheese, and derivations of enchantment. Damascus is the smell of jasmine and dried fruit. Tunis is the smell of night musk and salt. Rabat is the smell of henna, incense and honey. A city that cannot be known by its smell is unreliable. Exiles have a shared smell: the smell of longing for something else; a smell that remembers another smell. A painting, nostalgic that guides you, like a worn tourist map, to the smell of the original place. A smell is a memory and a setting sun. Sunset, here, is beauty rebuking the stranger.

لا أستطيع أن أكتبَ عن دمشق، دون أن يُعرِّشَ الياسمين على أصابعي. ‏ ولا أستطيع أن أنطقَ اسمها، دون أن يكتظَّ فمي بعصير .المشمش، والرمان، والتوت، والسفرجل - I cannot write about Damascus, without the jasmine climbing on my fingers. I cannot say Her name, without my mouth getting overcrowded with apricot juice, blackberries and quince.

أما اللَّيل، فهو مهنة الشُّعراءِ .. وكفى … - As for the night, It is a profession for the poets alone, And that is all.

تقول : متى نلتقي أقول : بعد عام و حرب تقول : متى تنتهي الحرب أقول : حين نلتقي - When are we going to see each other, she asks After a year and a war, I say When is the war going to end, she asks When we see each other, I say.

امسحوا الدموع يا رفاقي ثم ارفعو رؤوسكم مثل ما ترفع الأزهار تيجانها عند قدوم الفجر وانظرو عروسة الموت منتصنة كعمود النور بين مضجعي والفضاء امسكوا انفاسكم وأصغوا هنيهة .واسمعوا معي حفيف أجنحتها البيضاء - Dry your tears, my friends, and raise your heads as the flowers Raise their crowns to greet the dawn. Look at the bride of Death standing like a column of light Between my bed and the infinite; Hold your breath and listen with me to the beckoning rustle of Her white wings.

أقضي ليلي وأنا أكتب إليك رسائل حب ثم أقضي نهاري التالي وأنا أمحو كل كلمة على حدة فعيناك بوصلتان ذهبيتنان تشيران دوماً صوب ... بحار الفراق - I spend my night writing you love letters And then I spend the next day Erasing each and every word For your eyes are two golden compasses Always pointing towards… the seas of parting

ضبطت نفسي متلبسة بحبك مثل لصة صغيرة ..تسرق رغيف حنان - I have caught myself loving you Like a little thief Stealing a loaf of tenderness.

يوماً ما قُلنا لـنْ نفترقْ إلا بالموت تأخر الموتُ وافترقنا - We once said that only death would tear us apart Death was late and we split.

،وجَلس حزنِي تِجاهي تأملني قليلآ ثم أجهش الحزن بالبكاء .وبَقيت صامتة - And my sorrow sat next to me, stared at me for a while, then it burst into tears and I remained silent.
