because the resistance is not a bunch of evil, violent outliers; they are as much victims of the occupation as the women, children, and non-combatants are. Most if not all of them were born under the occupation; a good percentage of them are also orphans.

Rewatching Book 3 of ATLA and cringing at how dumb the Iroh fanservice plot twists are:
"Iroh lied about killing the last dragon before Zuko was born because he wanted to protect them! They actually deemed him pure of heart and worthy to learn the truest form of firebendingπ₯°" .......... even though he continued to be a violent general in an evil genocidal empire long after that...? I'm questioning the dragons' wisdom now.
"Actually Iroh and all the other old guys in the show are senior members of a super secret society working for the good of the world!!" ..... even though one of them flat out refused to teach the Avatar waterbending for misogynistic reasons, another refused to teach the Avatar firebending for personal reasons, and Iroh was an evil war general barely 6 years ago so I suppose he's only a recent member?
I love AtLA as much as anyone, but yeah it is, uh. Pretty abundantly clear that the White Lotus didn't exist in the writers' room until at least season two, and they didn't have a full idea of its role in the narrative probably until season three. The timeline on Iroh "Did A War Against All The Rest Of You" Azulonson joining and being trusted so high in the membership is also. Very questionable.
Which is all to say I think it would be perfect if we got to the season three end game and realized Iroh was actually still an errand boy initiate in the White Lotus. And Piandao pulls aside the main tent flap to reveal our Supreme Grand Lotus:

Many people in the comments are saying βtraumaβ, but this is actually a very normal occurrence. Itβs called Childhood Amnesia, and itβs a process which, as the brain reorganizes itself for cognitive thought that is developed in late childhood, it changes the Accessibility of those memories during recall. Many childhood memories are available to the person, but they will not be remembered during regular recall activity, you have to βtrickβ your brain into remembering with different tactics.
This is because there are two parts to memories - their encoding and their recall. The encoding determines their availability, their recall determines their accessibility. The reason why trauma memory and childhood amnesia are different is in this distinction. Trauma memory is often encoded differently, bypassing to the limbic system where it is stored as intrinsic memory. It canβt be recalled because it was never encoded. Childhood amnesia, however, seems to indicate that the memories are encoded, but we lose access to them as we age. This is most likely due to the development of brain structures that fundamentally change our encoding and recall of memory as we get older.
This is an important distinction, because trauma memory is βstored in the bodyβ, i.e. you get triggers that send your body into a cascade of uncontrollable feelings, sensations and reactions. Whereas childhood memories wonβt generally do that, they are just recalled at odd times with odd associations.

Trauma isnβt necessarily βstored in the bodyβ and doesnβt necessarily have triggers. These are common experiences but not universal. The 'encoded in the limbic systemβ theory has been disproven. Traumatic memories are re-experienced physically mainly because remembering causes our system to flood with stress hormones. There it also no evidence that trauma is stored in our 'ancient animal brainβ. (The body keeps the score is a bad pseudoscience book)
'Repressed memoriesβ donβt really exist. There are memories that are difficult to remember because they happened a long time ago and there are memories that youβve systematically trained yourself to avoid thinking about because they upset you, but they are still accessible to you. But if a therapist says you need hypnosis or some shit to 'recoverβ memories: run. Thatβs dangerous quack science and is likely to result in false-memory recovery which can really complicate existing trauma.
Intrusive remembering is a more common trauma-response than memory avoidance.
You can forget and then later remember genuinely huge things like your brotherβs wedding. You can also forget them entirely. It doesnβt mean you have 'repressed memoriesβ, it doesnβt mean that youβre traumatized and unless it happens frequently it doesnβt mean that you have cognitive problems. The brain as a memory tool is just incredibly flawed.
