mikes relationship with jane is to put it simply a horrible mess of foolishly cultivated misery spawned from a lack of care in the writers room awkwardly misplaced upon children who have little to no way of knowing anything better. it is complex either way and sad from any angle. mikes proclivity to forget his troubles through fantastical escapism ie doesnt mesh well with janes struggles with humanization and forming a concrete identity and he does nothing to help her through it all while neglecting his own in the process. to put it simply anyway... this is only worsened with mikes learned sardonically misogynistic behavior, and though he is a child and any ounce of cruelty is unintentional, it doesnt negate the impact it has on himself and others ie. jane and will (along with a generalized sense of Everyone&Everything). interesting enough on its own but with this extra level of repression added to the mix i find it sadder and a little bittersweeter on all fronts. jane roped into feminine conformity and mike envying her inability for social scrutinization... there are plenty of things to be said but forgive me for lacking the patience to do so

mike and will are both attracted to men and grow up discovering themselves as gay boys though over time would slowly but surely enough piece together something crucial and long buried... and theyve faced monsters plenty so i think they would handle this pretty well considering (and especially so as long as they know they have each other) (they do!). mikes internalized homophobia is not something that is lacking in fandom focus to say the least but i disagree with the notion that he would "angst" so heavily over it... i feel as though this misconception stems from popular misreadings of the rain scene in particular (no, contrary to what you might think, mike really didnt mean it like that) (it is still the worst thing hes ever said). mike at his truest is kindhearted and lonesome and easily lost and always trying to be someone he is not, which was well-established in seasons 3/4 and even hinted at if not blatantly shown in the earliest episodes. hes a fool with something to prove but young above all else, and this is a part of growing up! i strongly doubt mike hates himself for it the way will does, but he is still afraid of examining his in/externalized behavior and coming to terms with it. while he seems to be the more eager of the pair to mature and move on, we know this to be a front on his part! ITS A RUSE! mike is not agonizing over teenaged wet dreams of sodomization; he simply does not understand his own feelings, which is ironically why i think she opens up to that part of herself long before will does
