â A Royal Invitation [For Alistair]
As soon as he suggested it, Alistair regretted it. In truth, he was awful at these games. Not only because he had a hard time thinking of questions to ask, but he rarely got the opportunity to drink because heâd never done the things that other people usually asked about.
âThe way itâs played is that the person whose turn it is asks a yes or no question. The other person or people respond is by drinking. They donât drink if the answer is no, but if the answer is yes, they take a shot or sip of whatever other kind of drink they have. The questions can be along the lines âHave you ever blank?â but it can really be any kind of yes or no question.â
Alistair refilled his own shot glass as he spoke and then reached across the table for Cailanâs. âItâs usually a lot more fun with more people, because after a while the questions tend to get funnier as people get drunk, and itâs just interesting to see what kinds of people have done various things.â
He slid the full shot back to Cailan and looked up at him. âThere are other various ways to play the game, such as âI have never,â in which the person whose turn it is says something heâs never done, and if others in the group have done it, they take a drink. Sometimes the ways get mixed up in to the same game, too.â
He left the fire whiskey uncapped, ready to pour it when it was needed. âSound good? Should I start then?â He waited for Cailan to give the go ahead and then thought for a moment, eyes trailing down to his shot glass for inspiration. His eyes went back up to Cailan and asked, âHave you ever been drunk at a press conference?â
Cailan patiently listened to Alistair as he explained the rules of the drinking game. The game would definitely progress differently if they had a large group of people playing. He could only imagine the questions others would think of. Depending on the group they might also take the opportunity to learn as much as possible about him. Perhaps even learn if some rumors were true. Like, if he had a golden toilet.
He nodded when his brother asked if he was ready to start the game. It sounded simple enough. If he didnât get the hang of it right away for some reason, he would learn it over time. It was a fun game, so if he somehow managed to make a mistake he was sure Alistair would correct him.
A smile pulled at his lips when his brother asked him the question, a light chuckle also leaving him. âYou may have to try harder than that. While I have consumed alcohol during press conferences, I have not been drunk at oneâ he told him. The Kingâs eyes turned down to glance at his shot glass before turning out to look at the others in the dimly lit bar.
âI have neverâŚâ he paused, trying to think of something that his brother has possibly done that he hasnât before continuing âbeen to the Deep Roads.â It was honestly the first thing that came to mind. It wasnât as though he was particularly picking on Alistair, since he knew he was a warden so thereâs really no way he hasnât been to the Deep Roads. In fact, Cailan had wanted to go down and see what it was like for himself. However, there were some people who refused to allow him to do so.

Legacies and Royal Favor - [Elissa and Cailan]
Elissa nodded several times as she absorbed the information that her king was relaying to her, taking in several calming breaths along the way. âI trust your judgement, and I will certainly need a bit of hand holding in the beginning. I am well-versed in politics, but not the specifics of senatorial duties. That was meant to be my brotherâs legacy, so Iâm afraid the majority of the lessons Father gave on the subject went to him.â
She cleared her throat and took another sip from her glass, scouring through her anxiety driven thoughts for any questions that might need answering. âWill I need a staff? I expect I will need advisers of some sort, or at the very least an assistant. Maker, I donât even know where to start with that. I think most of the people Iâd hire to assist me would know more about my job than I did.â
At this she laughed, clapping a hand down over her face sheepishly, though her smile was visible beyond it.Â
Cailan couldnât help but let out a low chuckle when Elissa mentioned needing a staff. What she said was more than likely true. Some of the people who assisted her would know more about her job than she might, especially in the beginning. However, she would learn in time. People that would be willing to help her would also be aware of the fact that she hasnât been trained for such a position her entire life. And they definitely wonât hold it against her. If they did, then they werenât someone that she should have assisting her.
âYou will most definitely need a staff. If you need any help in this I will be here. Of course, you are more than welcome to get assistance from anyone else should you feel the need for itâ he told her with a reassuring smile. âAnd do not worry about feeling that others know more about your job than you do. Sometimes that is their job. However, if you are sure of something, do not let others completely sway your opinion.  Although, I do recommend you at least listen to what they have to say.â

â A Royal Invitation [For Alistair]
Once Alistair was done giggling over their jokes, he scrolled through the web page he had up on his phone. âThereâs another bar not far from here, though it looks kind of seedier than the Hanged Man. But less seedy than others, so that may be our best choice.â
Alistair pulled up directions on how to get there. âHmm. I could call a cab to come get us, but I think we can walk. Itâs only a few blocks from here.â He backed out of his browser and clicked his phone lock, stuffing it in to his pocket.
The walk to the bar seemed to take no time at all. Most of Alistairâs attention being on turning at the right intersections, so there was little talk from him. âAnd this should be the place!â he said once he stopped in front of a door, a neon âOPENâ sign flashing in the window next to it. He grabbed the handle, turned it, and pushed his way inside.
The bar was dark, with a lot of cigarette smoke hanging in the air. It looked like most any bar, packed at this time of night, only that a couple people sat at a table sharpening and shining what looked like large hunting knives. âWell, this looks cozy enough. You find us a seat, Iâll find us liquor.â
Alistair moved off to the bar, returning to Cailan and the table that he had found with two shot glasses and a whole bottle of fire whiskey. He set both glasses down in front of himself, sat down, filled each glass full, and slid one over to Cailan. âBottoms up!â Alistair downed the shot, feeling the heat and cinnamon burn down his throat in in to his belly.
âSo, I think we should play a game. Have You Ever, maybe. Have you ever played that game? Know any other drinking games?â He was probably playing with fire with a game like that, but he figured it might be the best way to get to know some things about his brother without things getting a touch awkward, and hopefully he kept his wits enough not to travel down the âhave you ever had a brother?â road.
Cailan didnât mind the walk to the next bar. It was actually pretty refreshing. And it wasnât as though he opposed walking anywhere. In fact, he went on regular runs with his mabari. It allowed the canines some exercise as well as a chance for him to get out. Then again, walking his dogs was a bit different than walking in Lowtown at night with only his brother.
He stayed quiet and followed Alistair, only coming to a stop when he did in front of the new bar. Blue eyes scanned the outside of the building before walking into the dimly lit place. âI will find us some very comfortable seatsâ he said with a grin and chuckle. Only glancing at the men with knives he found an empty table and sat himself down. The war they entered was definitely lessâŚfriendly than the last one. Even if Cailan had received a few nice punches in the last. At least the other bar didnât have people opening sharpening weapons in it.
The King would hate to see how the worse bars faired.
When Alistair walked to the table and sat down, he glanced at the bottle he brought with him before taking his filled shot glass. Raising it up he nodded toward his brother and took the shot. The fire whiskey had a nice sweetness balanced by the burn from the cinnamon.
His brows rose when Alistair suggested they play a drinking game. Carefully, he set the shot glass down onto the table as he debated the idea. âI have not played Have You Ever. How does it work exactly? Please, explain the rules of the game.â
crowns do queer things to the heads beneath them.

â A Royal Invitation [For Alistair]
Alistair got control of his own laughter enough to look seriously at his brother. âYes. How dare you dance with women with asshole boyfriends? Clearly you were in the wrong and should go back to formally apologize.â The Warden couldnât keep his face straight and let laughter spill from him again.
Alistair straightened up. The run had quickened what alcohol he had consumed in to his bloodstream. That, the laughter, and the fact that he was out of breath had made for a slightly dizzy moment. He took several deep, controlled breaths and the moment passed. One thing was for sure, he definitely not had enough to drink.
He took out his phone, ignoring the fact that he had about thirty missed calls, inwardly glad he had the foresight to turn the thing on silent, and pulled up the web browser it. He also didnât bother to look at the unhealthy amount of text messages he had piled up. âWe could call it a night, or we could try our luck at another bar.â He said even as his fingers flew across the screen, searching the area for more bars.
When the search was loading he looked back up at Cailan. âWhat say you?â
âPerhaps you are right, I should go back and formally apologize. Or should I send them a letter with a gift? Do you think they would enjoy flowers?â Cailan couldnât help but laugh at both his and Alistairâs comments. He highly doubted that they would have gotten in any trouble if they had stayed in the bar. Well, at least not from the authorities. It was extremely unlikely that they would feel obligated to arrest the King of Fereldan. However, he obviously did not need that attention. He could see the tabloids now. âKing Cailan fights over unknown beauty! Queen Anora nowhere to be seen!â
His blue eyes lowered to look at his brotherâs cell phone as he pulled it out. He would have to thank him for pulling him out of the bar at some point.
Cailan raised his brow at the suggestion of finding another bar to go to. Well, they didnât exactly drink all that much. Not that he was looking to get wasted. And not that that was an easy thing to do. A grin pulled at his lips as he combed his right hand through his hair. âWhat other bars are there? I do not think that it will hurt to find another one.â The phone that was sleeping in his back pocket said otherwise. âWell, unless I stir up another fightâ he said with a guilty, yet very amused, grin.
He was sure that his guards would have a few things to say to him when he returned to his hotel. As would Loghain the next time he saw him. However, it wasnât every day that he was able to spend time with Alistair. His brother who more than likely didnât know he was his brother nor knew that he knew that he was his brother. They were never really allowed to be together all that much when they were kids, let alone without supervision. The two of them had to make up for lost time at some point.
 What better time than now?
Legacies and Royal Favor - [Elissa and Cailan]
"Heâs⌠well, in Kirkwall there is likely some debate about who he is, but I know him and heâsâŚâ She fiddled with her glass, a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. âHeâs everything. Everything I needed long before I knew it was possible to need someone. Thatâs all that matters. To me, anyway.â
She cleared her throat and smiled, brushing her curls back over her shoulder and refocusing on what theyâd actually come there to discuss. âSo, Â how does this work? Iâll admit, I have an idea of what Father did, but I donât know the specifics. It was Fergus he groomed to take his place, not me, but I will do my very best to fill his shoes.â
Elissa attempted to put more confidence into her expression than she felt as she thought about what it would take to fill Bryce Couslandâs shoes, wondering if that were possible for her âor anyoneâ to do.
The King watched Elissaâs body language when she began talking about the man who kept her in the City of Chains. The person who made Kirkwall her home. He knew there was nothing he could do to stop the smile that mirrored hers. Not that he wanted to stop it. He was more than willing to let her know that he was glad she was happy.
Cailan brought his hand away from Niamh and set it back onto the table in front of him when Elissa steered the conversation back onto the purpose of the visit. âWell, there certainly are a lot of specifics. However, do not worry. I will not throw you blindly into the position. I have hand selected a couple of people to help you understand all of these specifics. They would also be willing to meet with you here or in Fereldanâ he said with a gentle smile. âAnd, of course, once you have picked up on everything they will let you be.â
Not that she would be completely alone in her job. She would constantly be assisted by those below her position, as well as those above and equal. Just as she would need to help them. It was important that she took the weight of responsibility that came with the station. She was to become a pillar that Fereldan stood upon. It has been far too long that those pillars shook and bent under the pressure of the kingdom.
