Yesterday I was mentioning that Czechs have a problem with cultural appropriation, blackface, yellowface, orientalism etc. and today I came for lunch to my moms and while being here I've seen on tv

white man dressed as a woman in blackface lipsyncing to some i assume black artist

two white guys with maracas and bunch of white girls dressed in some latin inspired clothing (which could be fine but here it was very much a cultural appropriation type of way) dancing to some i assume latin american music

a fairytale set in japanese setting where all the white guys wear costumes and hairstyles to make them look japanese

and that's just in the 2 hours I've been here.

#dívka na koštěti #it's been a while since I last saw the film #but given they're all fairy tale/magical beings I don't necessarily think it was meant to be a black face #with that being said czechs have a terrible record of blackface as well as other racist depictions and cultural approprations #like I think it's only in the last decade or so when we kinda stopped doing that #there are famous fairytales that are set in 'arabian' aesthetic played by white people #there are native americans being played by white people #(in fact our whole idea of what native americans are is mostly associated with stories of winnetou #which were storied written by a german author who has never been to america and drew on like germanic archetypes - its a big mess)#I'm sure we'd also find yellowface though though that is a bit rarer #mostly because that culture is so distant from us that we don't even tell stories of them #(even though we have a large population of vietnamese immigrants here)#anyway what I'm saying is that I don't think this particular character was meant to be blackface #but that doesn't mean that czech films (especially the fairy tales ones) are all sort of racist mess

In honour of me finishing This is How You Lose the Time War which was on my list last year I want to do this again. Last year I ended up taking too long rereading LOTR in the first half of the year and then I got absolutely stuck on A Little Life (which I haven't even finished). Also in my real life I had to change jobs and everything was a bit wonky the second half of the year so I actually managed to finish only one book on that list.

But still it was nice to know what books I want to read so I'm doing it again. Trying to keep my goals small but I'm hoping that this year will be a bit more stable and if my new job holds I will have to spend a lot of time traveling to and from so hopefully I'll read more (just as long as I don't have to read anything like a little life).

I want to finish some of the series I've started reading and which since then have new books. I also want to continue to read some of the classics. I realised that there isn't many authors where I've read a lot of their books so I want to have at least few authors where I can say I've read more than 4 books (and not from a series) from them.

I already read 8/9 on the list (I decided to wait with the sunshine court till the 3rd book is released and then I can order them all at once - if any of you know how I can get the books in continental Europe without using Amazon I'd be much obliged since I hate the idea of giving money to Amazon but I just can't seem to find a way how else to get them here).

Anyway so I decided to make a new one. And since the last few months I read a lot in english I'm thinking trying to go for something more international and/or czech (i'm putting the names in english here but if it's not originally written in english i will be reading the czech translation - since english would also be a translation anyway)

We'll see how we're gonna succeed with this bunch since it does seem like a random bunch and Earthsea will probably take me a while but I'm hoping that my daily travels to work will help me get into whatever it is I will be reading and that I will manage to read through them. I have 6 months to do so and some of these should hopefully not take me that long to get through.

#i already managed to tick off three from this next groupings #but now I have 900 pages of earthsea ahead of me so we'll see how long it will take me #but I am very happy with how many books I've read this year

a tumblr post made me remember a band I used to listen to when i was a tween and so I went and listened to their first album again today and oh man. Like it's the most teen angsty pop punk (especially the lyrics) but also it makes me remember all the angsty feelings i had back in the day and how those stupid lyrics spoke to me and how I'm actually grateful that they don't speak to me anymore. It made me realise how much I've grown and how mentally I'm not where I was back then.
