Haitian genealogy is not the easiest, but there are resources. https://sites.rootsweb.com/~htiwgw/familles-a.htm This site is useful for several surnames in Haiti, but all information from it should be verified by additional sources. There also is a Haitian Genealogy Facebook group that is quite active and includes many people with extensive experience who can answer questions and point to resources. Family Search (familysearch.org), a website affiliated with the Mormons, also contains a number of Haitian records from various parts of the island from the 1800s-1900s. One can find birth, marriage, and death records after setting up a free account on the site. For the colonial era, a number of records can be found at the French Archives nationales d'outre mer: http://anom.archivesnationales.culture.gouv.fr/caomec2/. Under Etat Civil, select Saint-Domingue and then choose which commune or parish you're looking for. Keep in mind that the territorial divisions of Saint-Domingue were not the same as those of independent Haiti, so you might have to peruse multiple communes. The records can be difficult to read, but they are often useful if you're tracing white colons or free people of color.

Gelede pays homage to the spiritual powers of women, especially elderly women known affectionately as “our mothers,” awon iya wa. The powers possessed by such women, comparable to those of the gods, spirits, or ancestors, may be used for the benefit or the destruction of society.  When manifesting their destructive dimension such elderly women are termed aje (“witches”).  If angered, they can bring down individuals and entire communities.
