Last month, we launched a project on BackerKit to celebrate some of the biggest dinosaurs that were named last year

We did that by making them dinosaur trading cards, and we were fully funded in 15 minutes!

Mass extinctions have happened a few times throughout Earth’s history. When talking about mass extinctions, most people are referring to what’s known as the “Big Five” (or maybe Six, depending on who you ask)

Each of the mass extinctions were caused by different catastrophic events. We did a deep dive into all of them as part of an I Know Paleo series (our monthly premium show for our members on Patreon)

From now until the end of this month (August) our Dino Friends (free members of our Patreon) can access the first episode in the series. We talk all about what makes a mass extinction, give an overview of the Big Five, and go into all the details of the first one: the Late Ordovician mass extinction (LOME)

LOME led to about 85% of species going extinct. At the time, everything was mostly in water. 

It happened in phases, or a one-two punch. What went extinct? Many trilobites (marine arthropods that looked kind of like big bugs), crinoids (sea lilies), and sponges died out. Some species did manage to survive, and they eventually repopulated the oceans.
