Mass extinctions have happened a few times throughout Earth’s history. When talking about mass extinctions, most people are referring to what’s known as the “Big Five” (or maybe Six, depending on who you ask)
Each of the mass extinctions were caused by different catastrophic events. We did a deep dive into all of them as part of an I Know Paleo series (our monthly premium show for our members on Patreon)

LOME led to about 85% of species going extinct. At the time, everything was mostly in water.
It happened in phases, or a one-two punch. What went extinct? Many trilobites (marine arthropods that looked kind of like big bugs), crinoids (sea lilies), and sponges died out. Some species did manage to survive, and they eventually repopulated the oceans.
