I think that relying too much in LLMs can indeed harm your capacity for learning, in the same way that poor systems of learning (rote memorization, just copying whatever without thinking) can. Learning is a thing you need... to learn. Even LLMs can be a useful tool for learning as long as you have a good learning strategy.

That paper that says that AIs cause COGNITIVE ATROPHY is still unreviewd and smells so much of bullshit that I'm tearing up from here. Do not share it uncritically.

As someone who has studied education psychology to be a professor, there is quite a jump from saying "learning problems", which is a thing virtually everybody has and can be mitigated through learning techniques and strategies, and fucking cognitive atrophy, the implication that using AI somehow harms your brain permanently.

Nothing from that paper indicates to me that it produces cognitive atrophy or decline, certainly nothing that could not be solved with good learning strategies, and nothing that seems inherently connected to AIs.

Then again, that's my opinion. Just think clearly. If there's a headline that straight up says "brain rot" you probably should be skeptical.

And aren't functional brain imaging studies sus in general? There was that one paper that won an Ig Nobel prize for something to do with fMRIs of dead fish "responding" to stimuli

This is also my own opinion as someone who interacts with academia and teaching but I do not believe that you can make any meaningful research on study methods, pedagogy, learning, etc. using brain scans. Understanding how people learn or not is a whole science. A brain scan can't tell you if a person learned something or why they're having difficulties with learning something.

Tumblr really stumbled into a beautiful feature with the whole "tags are separated from the main post" (as they should be, they're metadata) + "tags can be as long as entire tweets" thing. They make a really nice form of textual subvocalization/whisper mode/aside/whatever (they're flexible!).

I keep finding myself wanting to make such asides on other sites and find myself subtly irritated that I can't. I wanna elaborate in a way that is diminished compared to the main post!
