Starting in March 2013, academy members have studied The Wisdom of the Lotus Sutra series to deepen their understanding of practicing Nichiren Buddhism. Ikeda Wisdom Academy was named by SGI President Daisaku Ikeda on January 26, 2013, during the North America SGI Youth Leaders Study Conference. On that occasion, he sent a message quoting from Nichiren: “My wish is that all my disciples make a great vow” (WND-1, 1003). With this as the foundation, the Ikeda Wisdom Academy program was designed as a youth leaders study program to ensure the future of kosen-rufu based on the oneness of mentor and disciple. Our motto is: “protecting the mentor & the teachings.” Two local academy meetings are held each month to study and discuss the series with fellow academy members, accompanied by video overviews as support material for each meeting. The goal of the academy is to raise young leaders to battle hopelessness and despair that pervade our society into one of hope and purpose. President Ikeda states, “The Lotus Sutra teaches of the great hidden treasure of the heart, as vast as the universe itself, which dispels any feelings of powerlessness. It teaches a dynamic way of living in which we breathe the immense life of the universe itself. It teaches the true great adventure of self-reformation” (WLS-1, p. 14).
