     if  you’re  not  fifteen  minutes  early,  you’re  late.  the  mantra  is  practically  scripture  for  kamile;  it’s  only  ever  let  her  down  once,  when  she  had  been  invited  to  a  classmate’s  party  and  had  to  awkwardly  made  conversation  with  the  host  until  other  people  showed  up,  to  both  of  their  relief.  and  when  it  comes  to  classes,  it’s  always  worked  in  her  favor,  allowing  her  the  opportunity  to  get  the  best  seat  and  review  her  material  one  last  time.  kamile’s  near  obsessive  timeliness  has  become  even  more  advantageous  since  she  started  law  school,  with  her  and  professor  griswold  taking  advantage  of  the  five  to  ten  minutes  they  had  before  any  of  her  peers  showed  up  to  get  in  a  few  minutes  of  clever  class  material  based  innuendos  (though  recently,  there  has  been  a  part  of  kamile  that’s  hoped  griswold  is  running  late).  when  kamile  strides  into  the  classroom  exactly  fifteen  minutes  before  class  starts,  the  sight  of  isabel  sitting  alone  stops  her  in  her  tracks,  and  marks  the  second  time  her  rule  has  let  her  down.  she  can’t  even  be  relieved  that  griswold  has  yet  to  show  up.

     for  the  first  month  of  the  semester,  kamile  has  been  carefully  and  deliberately  avoiding  isabel.  they  haven’t  been  alone  in  the  same  room  for  years,  and  kamile  certainly  isn’t  going  to  be  the  first  to  reach  out,  justifying  her  avoidance  by  telling  herself  she  just  doesn’t  have  time  for  resolving  personal  drama  —  she  has  course  work.  she  schools  her  face  into  a  neutral  expression,  lifts  her  chin,  and  carries  on  her  way  to  her  seat.  “hi,”  kamile  says  with  a  curt  nod  before  busying  herself  with  pulling  out  her  laptop.

          isabel’s got a number of talents. punctuality, unfortunately, has never ranked very high on that list. she respects it, of course, tries her very best to play by its rules; but you can’t plan every second of your life and she certainly doesn’t try. to her, a minute lost is just loose change: something to spend unthinkingly. law school has proven itself to be an entirely different beast though. her peers are more intense, more dedicated, more— of everything, really. keeping up with them has required more effort than she’s used to exerting. today, a question for griswold necessitates her early appearance to class. not that it served her well. the classroom is empty when she arrives.
