She followed the stranger out of the cell, keeping her attention on both where she was walking and the map displayed in front of her. It was better this way, since they would be able to navigate far easier, and itâd show their proximity to any guards they happened to run into. Easiest for them to avoid conflict. Well, she hoped they wouldnât have to fight at all. She wasnât a strain or anything, so the most she could do here in this strange virtual world wasâŚher hacking skills.Â
But perhaps if push came to shove sheâd be able to create some sort of block to protect them, perhaps a wall between them and anyone who came at them? But coding something like that would definitely take time, and she wasnât sure if sheâd have enough time for something like that. Sheâd keep it on the back burner at least. It didnât hurt to have contingency plans.Â
StillâŚshe was surprised at just how quiet it was. Even though she was trying to make as little noise as possible, the fact it was so silent feltâŚunnatural. The map didnât display anything unusual, but that didnât mean they couldnât be walking right into a trap.Â
âItâsâŚa lot quieter than I expected,â she murmured, barely above a whisper as they ascended the steps. Then again, they were the only ones here. Had they given them lax security or something..?
Falco didnât answer the girlâs observations, being able to see that himself. Plus, a response only made more noise in the uncanny silence, and he didnât want to risk that. As he reached the top step, he peered around the corner of the stairwell. Nothing to the left. The right was the same.
The sound of a door opening in the distance, followed by the sounds of two, three sets of footsteps and a noise like something being dragged across the floor, caused Falco to duck back into the stairwell. âShit,â he hissed under his breath.
âDoesnât sound like a shift change to me. They got a body with them, so theyâre probably occupied.â Falco cocked his gun in preparation. âCould take âem down while theyâre distracted...â He was mostly thinking aloud, and his confidence in his ability showed through his tone of voice. âI donât want to let them roam around while Iâm trying to get out of here.â
