while working at uni reading rooms, i used to commiserate w/ my liberal white women mlis-holders about annoying philistine academics who would engineer their own MFA of a solipsism against The Archive so they can bypass the History-Gatekeeping Customer Service Bureaucrat in Cardigan Form, but then i'd see my annual 'raise' be like 61 cents and automatically made to cover public service shifts so everyone else can get flown to the SAA conference while i stay chained 2 an empty office front desk sorting mail for a week straight and i'd be like. okay 🧍‍♂️

What do historians mean when they say "archive"? One archivist makes the case for a more precise use of the word.

It is a shame to fight over terminology, especially when there is a perfectly accurate and precise term that could be used: personal collections. Not only is “personal collections” more accurate, in my experience it also draws students’ attention to a number of questions that they don’t ask about the term “archive.” When I discuss personal or special collections with students, they begin asking questions that “archive” does not inspire, such as: Collected by whom? Collected why? For what purpose? These are the questions we are trying to teach as historians.

As many historians currently use the word “archives,” they seem to imply that an archive is the natural state in which primary sources arrange themselves after being discarded or left by their creators. It creates the false impression that there is little to no work that goes into making primary sources available to researchers, and—more dangerously—that archives are even a neutral or unmoderated space. When archives and the historical record are used interchangeably in this way, we are unable to see what might be missing.

#this is a fine corrective but i find it frustrating that these critiques on the erasure of women's labor in archival consolidation #still valorise credential politics that marginalise women's work but from the defensive position of the mlis-holder than the phd...#while side-stepping that the very impetuses for diffusing the meaning of 'archives' to include basement papers and people's flash drives et #in proletarian/subaltern social histories was diagnosed as a legibility problem ie what counts as evidence in scholarly argumentation #and (value-neutral) (mostly) many institutional archives or even libraries n cultural centers themselves do not steward those papers #the trope of 'discovery' with historical research is annoying esp when academics r writing shitty autoethnographies abt the ~mystery~#of the ac-controlled reading room while they aeon-order materials that have long been flipped through and organised n even provided #detailed descriptive guides as granular as at the box or item-file level and it's like. ok u r Not christopher columbus of this collection #and yea even the post-stoler emphasis on hegemonic voices in ~traditional archives~ by less careful scholars of stoler trouillot etc #can become a cheap jab abt their customer service handmaidens not doing the research for them so it's epistemic colonialism #but critiques that this discursive confusion invisibilises Women Archivists' work isn't principled #if it doesn't also attack the library accredentialisation infrastructure that also jettisoned many women from exercising #intellectual authority over collections they built in the last decades and rendered entrance into the field more inwardly inaccessible.....#but whateverrrr who cares abt the reading room paraprofessionals and contract gig workers some would burn finding aid drafts before #letting iron mountain truck drivers n warehouse workers join the society of american archivists conference or bargain benefits as a member
