It is. It's a photo of an old, degraded specimen from the Smithsonian. (Dave Johnson of Harvard, MCZ specimen 60585)

ph. Dante Fenolio. More enhanced fresh specimen (possibly still alive) photos, including larval/juvenile stages. He is part of a team that studies the Gulf of Mexico for the long-term impact of the BP Deepwater Horizon oil disaster in 2010.

From Fenolio, "What is really cool is that the stomachs of these fishes are lined with a black, deeply pigmented tissue. This "cloak" helps to hide bioluminescent organisms that the fishes have recently eaten. Nothing gives away a fish to potential predators like having something glowing in its stomach in the dark depths of the ocean."

MUCH CUTER, NO? This is a particularly small preserved specimen. Usually they are about 6 inches/20cm. (If this was alive, it would be blinded by so much light.)

Although very little is known about them (like most bathypelagic fishes), there is some solid suggestion that they form bonded pairs from observations in the wild.

thank you! after i put the tags there i found out that it is in fact dead (probably should’ve edited the tags). as someone who loves marine life it really sucks that this is the only specimen people know about, they’re a great fish!!
