Robin Banks loved Winterfest. All those stupid families forgetting to lock their doors after that imbecile Father Winter had left, more often than not having deposited a forbidden yuletide log in their toilets. If the door wasn’t unlocked, there was almost certainly a window cranked open somewhere. And the presents: gaming consoles, hot tubs, portable bonfires! Yes, Winterfest was a very profitable day for Robin Banks.

"Oh, fuck RIGHT off!" Clementine snapped.

What Robin Banks had not accounted for was the emotionally fraught, hormonal teenager taking the new family puppy (§1000 with the right buyer) out to do his business.

"I’ve had the worst Winterfest ever! My sister’s not talking to me, and all because I have a masterplan to help her! You wouldn’t understand, it’s far more evil and clever than anything you’ve ever done! Now I have to deal with the fact I showed emotion in front of my gross blue-haired brother! Do you understand how humiliating that is? And you have the fucking nerve to try to rob me today of all days??"

Robin wasn’t sure whether she was imagining the steam coming off Clementine, but it was clear she wasn’t to be messed with.

"I love you!"

Long after the movie had ended, and after Jalen had said goodnight and hinted that they should probably call it a night soon too, Keely was still explaining her post-school plans.

"It’ll just be my mum and me! I’m sad I won’t get to see much of Tomarang, but I really want this over with before uni. I don’t want our first time to be with that. Sorry, that’s way too much!" Keely was talking at a thousand miles an hour.

"It’s not too much," Dallas said calmly, putting his hand on hers. "Do what you need to do and I’ll be here."

Keely climbed into her boyfriend’s lap, cradling his head in her hands.

"I really don’t deserve you," she sighed.

Jalen returned to his marking, aided by a pair of noise-cancelling headphones and a rather pointed look at Dallas and Keely as they made a quick exit to the living room. There, they settled on the sofa to watch a movie; to Dallas’s horror, College Cram.

As they watched, Keely’s investment in the movie, and her general excitement about university and everything that came after, was obvious. Dallas kept throwing nervous glances in her direction while she remained completely absorbed.

How would she feel if he didn’t go to university with her? How would she feel if he didn’t go at all?

Keely deserved to be with someone smart.

Jalen approached the young couple after an acceptable amount of time had passed and he could safely assume they were no longer attached to each other’s faces.

"Just the girl I wanted to see! I have a book on plants for your dad, but more importantly, you need to talk to this one about university choices!" He eyed his son pointedly.

"Daaad!" Dallas protested.

"Dad nothing! You need to get your application in as early as possible. I bet Keely already has her course picked out."

That part was true. Keely knew she was going to apply to Britechester’s Fine Art course. She looked at Dallas, who had a familiar panicked smile plastered across his face.

They had talked about university. Well, Keely had talked and Dallas had nodded along, occasionally hinting that he was torn between courses without ever naming any of them.

"Happy Winterfest, baby!" Dallas greeted Keely with a cheesy grin, holding a sprig of mistletoe triumphantly above her head as she stepped inside.

“I know Winterfest has been a bit of a shitter, what with your sister doing… well, whatever the fuck she’s doing, but with your birthday coming up, I wanted to ask if you’d given any more thought to your surgery.” Siobhan smiled awkwardly.

“Oh.” Keely had been trying to find the right moment to have this conversation with her parents, but Siobhan approaching her first certainly made things easier. “I still want it. One hundred per cent.”

“Well, your dad and I have been talking, and we can afford it. What would you say to a trip to Tomarang? Just the two of us, before you start uni.”

“Are you sure? It’s nearly twenty thousand simoleons!”

“Let’s just say I gaslit Willow Creek Gallery into believing my last landscape was my finest work, and San Myshuno Gallery started sniffing around. We can definitely afford it. Fecking suckers.”

Burton risked certain death as he reached for her hands. Clementine flinched, but she didn’t pull away. He took that as a promising sign.

“I’m not going to try to convince you not to go through with it. I know you will. But you know you can stop if you want,” he told her.

“It’s almost done. I’ve got nothing left to lose.” Her voice shuddered on the final words.

Clementine collapsed against him. Stunned, Burton wrapped his arms around her as she began to shake.

He knew they would never speak of this moment again. He certainly wouldn’t mention it to anyone else unless he fancied an early death.

Clementine rubbed the back of her neck and avoided Burton’s gaze. A horrible, pathetic part of her wanted to tell him everything, but she knew she couldn’t. Other people would only disappoint her, interfere and weaken the plan.

Then again, the plan hadn’t accounted for her own sister hating her.

Her eyes began to sting. This was the worst-case scenario.

“It wasn’t meant to happen like this,” she whispered. “She wasn’t meant to find out.”

Burton was suddenly very aware of how young Clementine was, despite her intelligence. It had been spectacularly naive to assume she could conduct an entire relationship at the same school, directly beneath her sister’s nose, without eventually being discovered.

“Haven’t you heard of knocking?” Clementine snapped as Burton quietly closed the door behind him.

“I was just coming to see how your fake headache was doing,” he replied coolly. “It’s Winterfest. Everyone misses you.”

“No, they don’t.”

After opening their presents, Keely and Niamh joined Siobhan to “help” prepare the Winterfest feast.
