Clementine sighed with mild relief as Keely left the room with a very considerate little slam. She was furious, clearly, but Finn was asleep next door.

Once she was sure the door was closed, Clementine dug her mobile out from under her pillow.

Clemencrime: i think she bought it... shes pissed tho LittleLordFaarqualroy: !!! Bryant just got home and is extolling your virtues! Clemencrime: wat LittleLordFaarqualroy: He thinks you're hot.

Clementine smiled.

“…and he has blue hair like me! How awesome is that? He plays guitar and he’s from Strangerville!” Burton was basically talking at Siobhan by this point.

Siobhan nodded and smiled, half-heartedly adding strokes to her painting. She wasn’t especially invested in the piece itself; it was mostly there to keep her awake while she waited for Keely and Burton to come home.

By the sounds of things, they’d had a brilliant night.

Keely entered her sister’s room, having left her crown on her dresser to remove the temptation of using it as a makeshift shank.

She knew Clementine too well to expect panicked excuses, but the sight of her lounging in her pyjamas like she’d had the most uneventful evening imaginable made Keely’s blood pressure rise.

“Oh hi, Keely! Did you have a nice time?” Clementine asked, voice far too bright.

“You know I did, Clementine. Have fun with Bryant?”

She had been aiming for cool. Unfortunately, Bryant came out with teeth.

“I don’t know what you mean,” Clementine replied smoothly. “I just wanted to enjoy prom in case I don’t get to go when my time comes, spare and all. Did I stand too close to someone?”

She sounded calm. Unbothered.

Keely knew better than to trust it.

“DAD! Dad, I won Prom Royalty!” Keely burst in, sprinting to the first person she could find with the news.

“Amazing! As you should!” Mikel cheered. “Go show your sister. She got back from her homework club a few hours ago, but she might still be awake.”

Ah yes.

Keely found herself at a prom afterparty. Everyone seemed genuinely pleased that she’d won Prom Royalty, including Anita, who Keely had always assumed was Grace’s loyal shadow.

She couldn’t quite drop her suspicions completely, but she had the distinct impression that as they approached the end of high school, most of their year were growing rather tired of Bryant and Grace.

“Does your hair really grow out of your scalp like that?” Coleman asked, transfixed by Burton’s natural electric-blue hair.

“All mine,” Burton said proudly. “Trade-off for being born stuffed with sawdust, I guess.”

Coleman stared at him, visibly trying to process several parts of that sentence at once.

Burton got the impression that Coleman was fun, if perhaps not burdened by an excess of brain cells.

“Besides,” Dallas added, quieter now. “There’s something I’ve been wanting to do all night.”

Keely barely had time to process that before he leaned in and kissed her.

It was shaky, and she was fairly sure he misjudged the location of her mouth slightly, but it was perfect.

“I know what I saw, Dallas!” Keely snapped, her voice rising with every word. He didn't understand. He couldn't possibly understand the betrayal she felt.

“Okay, I believe you,” Dallas said gently. “Sneaking into prom is very Clemmy-coded. But she could've just been standing next to him.”

“They looked too comfortable. She's up to something. I just...”

Before she could work herself up any further, Dallas wrapped his arms around her.

Keely let out a long sigh.

This was supposed to be their night.

She wasn't going to let Clementine steal it from her.

Keely knew exactly what she'd seen.

What she couldn't understand was why her sister was with him.

She knew Clementine was ambitious. She knew she was manipulative. Quite possibly evil.

But why would she willingly befriend the boy who had made her life miserable for years?

Unless...

Unless she was just doing it to hurt her. ....

Clementine felt her stomach drop.

She hadn't planned for Keely to see her. Of course she'd see her eventually, but not yet. Not before everything was in place.

She couldn't tell her the truth, even if every instinct was screaming at her to.

Keely was too kind.

She'd try to talk her out of it. Worse still, she'd probably warn Bryant despite everything he'd done to her.

No.

This was going to hurt.

“Please give a huge round of applause to your Prom Royalty, Keely Aherne, and your Prom Jester...”

The rest of Principal Prescott's announcement washed over Clementine. Beside her, she felt Bryant stiffen in anger.

On stage, Keely and another girl chatted excitedly as they were presented with a crown and jester's hat. Keely looked out across the crowd, her smile growing.

For the entirety of her time at school she'd felt isolated. Othered.

Yet these people had voted for her.

Maybe not all of them... but enough.

She smiled warmly at the crowd until her eyes caught a flash of familiar long red hair...

Clementine was mercifully rescued from Bryant's bathroom spit-shower by the announcement of Prom Jester and Prom Royalty.

She slipped out behind him, confident he'd keep as much distance between himself and Keely as possible.

As she scanned the crowd, she caught Jaya enthusiastically cheering near the front.

Please don't recognise me.

Bryant, meanwhile, looked positively regal as he made his way towards the stage, already convinced he was about to receive the crown that was rightfully his.

Burton, meanwhile, had decided to launch a charm offensive against none other than Grace's permanently wound-tight, faintly haunted-looking brother.

He opened the conversation in the only way he knew how.

“Hey! The Watcher isn't going to smite you for smiling, you know. It's really not that bad!”

Elijah glanced at him.

“Isn't it?” he sighed.

Burton paused.

This was clearly a much bigger problem than smiling.

Completely oblivious to the fact that her sister was even there, Keely and Dallas spent most of the evening on the dance floor.

There was plenty of awkward eye contact, bashful smiling, and the occasional blush whenever one of them realised the other was already looking.

It was all painfully sweet.

Bryant was exactly as easy as Clementine had predicted.

He was a teenage boy.

And, more importantly, a spectacularly stupid one.

“I... think... you... should... break... up...” Clementine managed between Bryant’s deeply unpleasant attempts at kissing.

“With Grace?” He surfaced briefly.

“Mm.”

“Consider it done, babe.”

Bryant immediately resumed his efforts.

“Rough night?” Clementine crooned as Bryant slumped into the chair beside her.

He jumped.

He could have sworn the seat had been empty a second ago. Instead, an absolute knockout was smiling back at him.

“Oh! I... hey!” He hurriedly recovered, flashing what he clearly believed was a devastating smile. “Bryant Landgraab.”

“Oh, I know who you are.” Clementine smiled back. “I'm a huge fan of your channel.”

It was the biggest lie she'd told all evening.

“I’m Satsuma.”

“Is that...?”

“It’s French.”

Bryant nodded immediately, clueless.
