“Mother, I’d like to introduce you to my girlfriend, Satsuma.” Bryant approached with the false confidence of someone who knew his evil mother wouldn’t treat him poorly in front of guests.

Nancy looked Clementine up and down appraisingly before breaking into what Clementine assumed was a smile. It was hard to tell.

“Why, Bryant! You didn’t tell me you had a new girlfriend! What a true beauty. Not plain like that Gilchrist girl. That’s a beautiful dress, darling. Very demure. Very mindful. Such an unusual name too!”

“Why, thank you, Mrs Landgraab!” Clementine smiled easily. “It’s French. Both the dress and the name.”

As if on cue, just as Geoffrey disappeared into the house, Clementine arrived early to "support her boyfriend."

"Look at you! Looking like one of the Wives of Willow Creek!" Lord Farquaad cackled.

"Hey, this was the most frigid-looking potato sack I could find. It's Keely's. What's your excuse, Sherlock Shit?"

"This is timeless. Anyway, do you have the USB?"

"Right here." Clementine patted her glove. "You ready for this?"

While Nancy and Bryant checked the lighting, Lord Farquaad and Geoffrey stayed outside, safely out of the way. Suddenly, the enormity of what was about to happen hit Lord Farquaad like a tonne of bricks.

"I CAN'T DO THIS! PLEASE DON'T MAKE ME DO THIS, DAD! SO MANY PEOPLE! YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT'S ABOUT TO HAPPEN!" he screeched, his eyes struggling to focus.

"Please, that's enough. Your mother will hear you, and that won't be good for any of us." Geoffrey tried to calm his youngest son.

"She's... she's going to be so angry."

"Here." Geoffrey slipped a sweet from his pocket and held it out to him. "I know she has you on that sugar-free diet after your last pimple."

Lord Farquaad stared at it.

"I won't tell if you don't."

"Smile, sweetie!" Nancy's augmented face pulled itself into a look of concentration as she snapped a few test shots of Bryant, checking the lighting.

"It's my birthday, Mum! Do we really have to do this?" Bryant groaned.

"I mean, we don't have to, but there is the small issue of the videos."

Bryant stood a little straighter and forced a smile while every muscle in his face screamed in protest.

"Okay, you're making that face again! Sorry, I know you're stressed out!" Keely looked at him with concern.

"It's nothing!" he protested, feeling slightly guilty.

"Come here! Oh my Watcher! Your shoulders!" She reached over and gave one a squeeze. They were practically solid.

"That's just muscle, baby!" He flashed a corny grin.

"Need I remind you that I know what's under there?" she retorted.

"So you know it's all muscle? Ow!"

Dallas winced as Keely dug her fingers into one particularly stubborn knot.

"Muscle doesn't usually complain when you poke it."

"Mine does."

"Your muscles are very sensitive."

"Thank you for respecting their boundaries."

Keely laughed and continued working at his shoulders, apparently satisfied that she'd found the source of that face.

Dallas let her.

Having finally been released from Career Day, Keely and Dallas took a break outside before heading home.

"Can you believe we'll be in dorms soon?" Keely said, unable to keep the excitement out of her voice.

"Yeah..."

Dallas wasn't really sure how to tell his girlfriend that he still hadn't decided what to study, or even if he was going to study at all. She already had so much going on between the constant hassle from Bryant, albeit strangely less so recently, planning her surgery, and applying for her own course. He didn't want to add to her stress, or give her any reason to panic and change her mind about uni.

"Niamh is going to love that vet talk when she goes to career day! Oh my Watcher! You have to see what she did to her hair! Did I tell you?"

Keely wasn't really paying attention to her surroundings as she chatted. If she had been, she might have noticed Jaya's eyes widen as Mara sidled up to them, looking increasingly sheepish.

"Girl, what the fuuuuuck?" Jaya hissed at Keely through gritted teeth.

"Sorry!" Mara squeaked. "I just thought..."

Keely knew Mara was overstepping the boundaries she'd set, but she also wasn't going to be that girl. Mara had hurt her, but there was still a chance it had been a genuine misjudgement, and Keely wasn't ready to hold it against her forever.

"Can you believe that?" Coleman was almost shouting as they sat down together.

"What? Sorry, I zoned out ten minutes in." Burton sighed.

"That woman went to space in her own rocket! Do you know how hard it is to calculate a stable ascent trajectory when your thrust-to-weight ratio is constantly changing? She's a total badass!"

"W...what did you just say?" Burton blinked.

"Oh, thrust-to-weight ratio? It's pretty standard. I've been building a rocket in my back garden since just before prom."

Burton stared at him. "You're building a rocket?"

"Yeah!" Coleman grinned. "Hey, do you think your skeleton's blue too?"

"What?"

"Because your hair grows blue naturally. I've been wondering how far down it goes."

On their first day back at school after the Winterfest break, Keely entered the canteen with a mission. Burton lolled along behind her and didn't realise they'd sat down at the same table as Mara until Keely started to speak.

"I wanted to thank you for telling me about Bryant and... my sister." She spat the words out before she could overthink them. "You... you were right."

This was not a conversation Burton wanted any involvement in. Nor did he rate Mara particularly highly after she'd dropped them for a chance at popularity, so he occupied himself by staring intently at some marks on the table.

"I'm sorry you had to find out from me. I don't expect you to want to be friends again. I just thought you should know." Mara tried not to sound too hopeful.
