ICARUS FELL —

nate and his importance to her as someone who profoundly understood her and how much she loved him and how she grapples with wondering how nate would have fared in the post-war world. her need for and also fear of isolation without him as her rock.

the fact that she was a pretty distant person pre-war (and still is post-war to some degree) but manages to forge more meaningful relationships in the apocalypse than she ever had previously and sort of her ruminations on that fact. like is it necessity? is she just afraid of being more alone that she already feels? is it indicative in a change in who she is as a person now? who knows. i don’t. she doesn’t.

                           “  what —  ”

                             “  ---  pardon?  ”     she’s half lost in thought,  mind on the case at hand,  only registering that the sheriff was speaking to her when she looks up and catches his gaze.  he’s got a sheepish smile and a finger tapping the underside of his chin,  and it only takes her a moment to put two and two together.  fingers fly to her own chin and come away  ---  sticky and orange.

“  sweet potato,  ”     she explains with a laugh.  no napkin on hand,  so she pops the finger into her mouth.  perhaps unbecoming,  but she doubted the sheriff was the judging type.        “  my son is finally trying solids.  we did mashed peas last week,  what a disaster.  ”
