From a cat's perspective, it's not that he has a bed and you have a bed. WE have TWO BEDS, a small bed and a large bed. And if you don't want to use the small bed, you do you, but he doesn't see why that should stop him from using the large bed.
I kept trying to figure out what his photo reminded me of
Saw Disclosure Day today, and what an odd movie-going experience. I don't think I've ever seen a movie and felt immediately and totally that it was just entirely mistimed. Like, was it a good or bad movie? Idk, it's Spielberg, so at the very least it's competent. Some thin characters, sure, and at many points the movie is clearly not interested in the things I'm interested in, but whatever.
[Mild spoilers ahead, but tbh, idk that any of this is anything you couldn't guess from the trailers]
I'm just stuck utterly failing to believe in the movie's big ~Disclosure Day~ climax because:
We're in the age of AI now. Absolutely no alleged alien footage is getting credulously believed right off the bat, no matter what some newscaster says.
What a touchingly out-of-touch faith in the the power of journalism and the reach of local journalists, lol.
Listen, am I jaded and dead inside or something? Is Spielberg living in the past re aliens? Because I didn't buy the way people got immediately emotional on seeing the alien footage. Maybe it's just that he used the classic Roswell little gray guys with the big black eyes as his aliens, and I simply cannot take those seriously anymore. I just think that short of actual, very obvious and visible alien ships showing up in, like, major cities, you're not going to get this kind of response.
I take the existence of other intelligent life in the universe as a given. The universe is very, very big, both in terms of time and space. Our existence as intelligent life may be unlikely, but not so much so as to be singular. I just don't think we're likely to ever meet any other intelligent life, because see prev re very very big universe. So, like, am I an outlier here? Is this something I'd have to be Christian and/or religious to understand or whatever? Because it would not rock my whole world view to get incontrovertible proof of intelligent life. Obviously it'd be exciting, but it wouldn't be crisis-inducing. It also wouldn't be especially crisis-inducing to find out there was a whole government conspiracy about it. Like, if such a thing had ever happened, that's a given, lol.
In general, I understand what Spielberg is going for here, it just all feels so...naive. And that is coming from someone who loves stories about the power of love and empathy! I guess my issue here is that the movie comes off as incredibly naive about the logistics, and I guess worldbuilding for lack of a better word, of its setup/premise. Spielberg should have set this movie in the 80s or 90s, it would've been more believable as a period piece.
In general, I just feel like we're 20+ years past the heyday of this particular brand of alien/first contact story. It feels really dated, and not in a fun and nostalgic way.
One really gets the sense that Spielberg is a True Believer re aliens, and that's why the movie doesn't, like, bother to provide sufficient stakes for why this big disclosure needs to happen now, in this way. Josh O'Connor's character gives a little speech about it, but it amounts to "people deserve to know!!!" And sure, I guess. But I feel like there was a missing scene or a dropped narrative thread about what's driving Colman Domingo's character to set this all in motion at this particular point in this particular way.
(I know what reason I'd find most interesting: that Domingo's character knows that humans at large need to get with the program ASAP because the wider galaxy is about to come knocking, for good or for ill.)
I will say, props to Spielberg for the open ending, and for the unanswered questions. There's stuff to chew on here, and the makings of a much more interesting story. I also really liked Margaret as a character.
Just, uh, maybe I'll have to imagine this movie took place in a universe with an Earth that has a fundamentally more healthy media environment? Or a high-trust society? Like maybe one where Fox News never existed?

Okay but imagine being the team of Eridian scientists tasked with keeping Erid's Only Human alive for as long as possible while the whole planet's environment is literally trying to kill him. And then Rocky shows up and is like:
âGrace says he would like half of dome to be water.â
âOh, is necessary for humans to have large amounts of water question?â
Small Eridian equivalent of a sigh. âNo. Not needed for life. In fact Grace will die if he falls in water and does not get out.â
âTell him we give him water in containers that won't kill him. Lots lots lots of water on Erid for Grace to drink.â
âNo. Grace say he want water on ground. Also want it with excess sodium chloride compound so it will be unhealthy for drink.â
âWHY QUESTION???â
To celebrate Erid getting their sun back on track, Grace asks for some alcohol. There's a small amount left from the Hail Mary and Rocky offers to take it to the science Eridians to see if they can synthesise more.
âGrace want this liquid for celebration.â
âOf course.â They scan it. âYou have wrong liquid. This contain compounds which are poisonous for humans.â
âYes yes yes. Grace say humans like feeling of being slightly poisoned.â
âWHY QUESTION?????â
Grace is like one of those extremely finicky tropical fish who instantly die if not kept in extremely specific conditions.
Only here the fish can talk and keeps asking you to make it vodka.

After school care pulled me aside about my child dropping an f-bomb âwithout remorseâ and I put on my concerned face and nodded a bunch.
Apparently he was building something with a younger kid âwho really looks up to him and is just starting to make friendsâ and said âHey, youâre really fucking good at this.â which is, in my estimation, really a parenting victory.
I absolutely failed at doing this:

pacific rim fucks severely for a lot of reasons but my favorite is that it opens with "the lizard aliens are unionizing so we built robots running on the power of love to fight them you got all that right" and before you have time to really process that concept bam gunshot body on the floor and the movie goes "now consider the vast power of grief in this setup" it never really stops considering
It also has a scene where the robot uses a boat as a baseball bat. That also fucks tremendously.

As far as possible, Jen Orpin
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a slapping,
As of some one gently flapping, flapping at my chamber door.
ââTis some fairy,â I muttered, âslapping at my chamber doorâ
            Only this and nothing more.â
Quoth the walrus, "Are you sure?"
