I stumbled upon something so amazing that was happening right under my nose.  You see, there are people who love music, and then there’s me.  I’m obsessed with it.  I’m obsessed with what it does to the spirit.  Music is so special.  It’s a creation by someone else that has the ability to make ones body move; sometimes uncontrollably.   It’ll make you laugh, angry, cry, militant, sexual, violent, horny, bitter, jealous…it has the power to make you fall in love.  And what’s so interesting about it is that it’s all created by human beings.  Created by humans with special powers.  No seriously, special powers.  Quincy Jones has special powers! Roy Ayers has special powers!! Rick Rubin has special powers!!!

Sorry, that’s not the point of this story…

The DJ is like a music whisperer.  To understand the music the way an educated DJ knows music is a powerful phenomenon. They are like scholars, great teachers and philosophers.  Hip Hop Platos or Freuds.  I often find myself asking the superior DJ ‘How do you know THIS song exists?’  And 'how did you know to play it right at this moment?'  And 'you're spinning vinyl, how did you find it that fast?'  Or 'How do u blend so perfectly…HOW DID YOU TIME THAT?'  Amazing.   Amazing like John Coltrane or Donald Byrd.  Amazing like Leontyne Price or Luciano Pavarotti.  You DJ are an artist all by yourself because of the fascinating narrative that you are able to construct during your set that keeps this crowd anticipating what is coming next.  You DJ are remarkable.  You’re like a superhero that I always wanted to be.  The superhero of the party.

I just watched this video on my Luva's blog ( http://stuckeythewriter.blogspot.com/ ).  I LOVE Solange.  This video was shot in Cape Town, South Africa.  It totally brought back 10,000 memories that I have of my trip there.  Cape Town is a very colorful place, like LITERALLY colorful.  Yellows, purples, blues, and bright oranges everywhere.  And the browns are rich; rich shades of brown that you feel an immediate connection to.  From the browns of the sands to the browns of the skin...Cape Town is just a special, special place.
