Marcel apologizes tearfully to Reiner here as he explains.

This explains Marcel’s later intuition to save Reiner from Ymir, considering his guilt at leading Reiner down this path. This was never meant to be Reiner’s journey, yet by being cursed and then “saved” again, he is the one who ends up with years upon years of internal turmoil, and now he is also - outside of Annie - the last man standing.
