When I met McMurphy
McMurphy greeted everyone finishing with me. He walked right up to me probably looking at me thinking just what the rest of them think. Chief Broom the big, dumb, deaf, Indian.
The part I remember the most is him laughing right in my face. He cackled and all I could think is it can't be that I'm the big Indian. He talks to me unlike the rest of them. He saw right through me without even trying. He knew that its an act and he didn't even know who I was. He was onto me and he made sure to let me know it. The Big Nurse just stood and stared at him as another Acute. Just one more person she can make smaller. McMurphy forced me to shake his hand to welcome him to the ward and the Big Nurse made her way over to interrupt this event. She made her stance on the rules of the ward very clear to McMurphy, with her eyes piercing into his. He continued to grip my hand as he spoke to her and she didn't care to notice. She thinks I'm deaf and dumb and that all she'll know. The Big Nurse glared at our new Acute and tells him he is no different than the others. McMurphy stared deep into the hollow shells of her eyes and doesn't back down. The gears are turning and she no longer in the control room. This time it is different. The Big Nurse sees something else, she knows that McMurphy may clear the fog and she is not happy. I been waiting a long while to see someone walk in and make her small the way she does to us. Maybe McMurphy will be the one. They smirked at another sizing each other up just as he releases my hand.
McMurphy is not afraid of the Combine. He looked at the Big Nurse in the eye and smiled. I think he decided then that he would play her game.
