His mind raced as he sat contradictingly calmly beside his wife. He was plagued with thoughts of his past, things he’d done that he wished he could take back. A sideways glance at his wife reminded him of the man he wished to be. He wondered if she’d still love him if she knew of his sins.

He always wished he could be the romantic type, as he was sure she deserved at least that much. However, such a cold, analytical mind had no place for such pleasantries. Rather, his brain often racked for quick comebacks, and manipulative tactics to get what he needed from the numerous enemies he had. Sometimes, he wondered if he manipulated her.

As often as he could, he would shove those thoughts aside. He would attempt to convince himself that he could differentiate between his manipulative stunts and his true feelings. Other times, however, he was faced with what he believed to be the bitter truth. After all, a mind as brilliant as his cannot be fooled, even by his own intellect.

“Darling?” Her voice, as soft as it was startling, called to him. He liked to think of her as a lighthouse, one that guided him like a ship through treacherous waters to the rocky shore he called reality.

“Yes, my love?” His voice wavered, betraying his every hope to hide away his fears. Her gaze softened as her brows knit together in concern.

“What’s on your mind? You seemed so deep in thought, I’m a bit worried.” His mind filled with excuses, even without his conscious intent to do so. Instead, he reached out, hand trembling as it fell over hers, resting assuredly on his knee.

“You’re so beautiful.” He simply said. For once, shockingly to him, he didn’t think to say it. He had no plan, no scheme, just feelings. Such a foreign feeling left him nervous, scared even. This woman had no idea the power she held over him.

“What’s got you so sentimental?” She was well aware that this was no normal occurrence, and she had every right to be wary. It’s not all that common for him to blurt such compliments with no apparent reason.

“I mean it. If the stars were at their most bright and brilliant, I’d still only watch them in the reflection of your eyes. If the sea came to dance around us, I’d only move at your command. If God himself demanded I kneel, I’d only do so at your feet.”

Tears welled in the woman’s eyes as she became overwhelmed with emotion. Her heart pounded in her chest, drumming almost in rhythm with his words.

“My angel, I tell you often that I love you, but I’m positive that there’s no string of words in any language that could truly express the feeling I get when I’m at your side.
