"Okay, deep breaths, tell me what you saw." The detective shifts in their seat.
"It was- we. Uhm," she steadies herself, "we were playing in the forest. I think there were 5 of us, I dont remember off the top of my head." She blows her nose before continuing. "Someone suggested hide and go seek so we all broke off. I hid up in a tree so I had a good view and could see two hiders and the seeker. My sister, Niña, she was hiding behind a rock and Selina, Selina Seven, the seeker, found her. It was like a scene out of a horror movie. Selina came up behind Niña and before she could even react had grabbed her in a hug from behind and- and ate her." She starts sobbing again, "Selina just. Opened her mouth and. It was like watching someone pick up a chicken or a small dog. It didnt matter how much Niña struggled, Selina just kept swallowing and dragging her down. I still remember how satisfied that snake looked after taking care of Niñas squirming legs and discarding her shoes. The distended stomach holding my sister. All I could do was stay silent, I wish I did something."
The detective had stopped writing a while ago. "That, sounds like a lot, miss." They lean forward and sigh, "did anyone else see this happen?"
"And you're aware that people don't... swallow other people whole... right?"
"Detective please you have to believe me!"
"I'll look into it Ms. Emily, but I can't promise I'll find anything."
Selina is at Niñas funeral despite being uninvited, looking identical to how she did before the events in the woods. Ms. Emily spends the entire night glaring her way, while the detective opts to use the night to watch Emily and Selina for any suspicious behaviours. A lot of remorse and useless conversations later, Selina corners someone and makes small talk. Someone who comes out of that conversation trembling and drenched in sweat. The detective makes a note to talk with her after the event.
"Ma'am, may I have a word?" The detective pushes through the crowd.
"Who are you? What about?"
"Im a detective, investigating Niñas disappearance, you talked with Selina Seven earlier, right?"
She scratches her arm before answering, "yes, Mx, I did. Why do you ask?"
"You seemed frightened by the conversation. Why was that?"
She looks around nervously. "I can't talk here, it's too open. Call me." She scribbles her name and number down on a napkin and hands it to the detective and drives off without another word. The detective looks at the name. Flips open their notebook, and writes a phrase before underlining it.
"Why was Sarah Six afraid of Selina Seven"
