This is my son Jingles, he turns 10 years old this year. I love him dearly, the pins have changed and the back and sleeves have patches on them, plus extra fabric behind the pins cause he's got his fair share of wear and tear.

i am not immune to a well choreographed fight scene with a fun song in the background
i'll be honest. If you can't deal with someone wording things badly then you aren't going to be an ally to autistic people or indeed anyone with a developmental disability, intellectual disability, or disability that impacts language.
also you are never going to be safe for people for whom english is their second language. if someone clarifies their meaning and apologises and you can't accept that over the original wording then don't bother pretending to be autism friendly.
and like part of my autism is that i become convinced that the way i interpret words is the way that they're meant. my autism is disabling to my communication abilities. i have poor emotional regulation, i jump to conclusions. a lot of my reactions are informed by prior negative experiences. i can and probably have been overly defensive in the past.
and i've been misinterpreted so much and had my words picked over and mocked for saying the wrong things and mocked for being unable to say anything at all and it always feels devastating. it's ironic that the same disability that has me treated poorly would have me react poorly to a similar situation, but that's just how it is.
so i'm not saying you can perfectly manage all your reactions just by trying hard enough. especially considering how much disability affects these things. but i do think if you are completely unwilling to give autistic and other DD/ID people leeway for how they word things or understand that they have a disability that impacts their communication and give us grace then you aren't a disability advocate.

I think that you need to have a certain amount of rule breaking attitude to be the first to do something.
I think that my grandmother didnât become the first woman race car driver because sheâs the sort of person who thinks that every time you eat at a dining table you need a full table placement. You canât just bring a plate and fork to the table youâve gotta have like tablecloth, placemats, two kinds of knives, the works. Her mind cannot comprehend a universe where you could just eat a sandwich off of a napkin at the table.
So in the same vein she couldnât conceive of a woman race car driver because there werenât women race car drivers when she was a kid. She was like âoh it just wasnât done back thenâ so she didnât even try even though that was her dream job.
Anyways I do often wonder how much talent and passion has been lost over the years because thereâs a lot of people out there like my grandmother who canât conceive of things outside of the established norms. If there had been even one person who pushed her to follow her dreams, she probably wouldâve been a damn good race car driver but nobody did and she wasnât.
The thing is, Iâm also naturally a rule follower. I can conceive of breaking the rules, but actually breaking them makes me think Iâm gonna get in trouble. Or at least thatâs how I used to be.
There were people in my life who taught me how to question the rules and assert myself and I had parents who encouraged me to follow my dreams first and think about money second.
I got lucky though. Not everybody has people to teach them how to be bold and not everybody is naturally a rule breaker.
So somebody that wanted to be a race car driver became a housewife because she didnât know that there were already women race car drivers. And she had a fun and interesting life as a housewife but she didnât do what she really wanted.

if abbi pulling were a man, her success in the 2024 f1 academy season would be talked about for ages. She wouldâve been instantly moved up to higher junior racing series. Not stuck in gb3. obviously, if she were a man she wouldnât have been in f1 academy (but thatâs not the point here)
in the 14 races they had that season, abbi won 9 of them. She got 10 pole positions. And podiumed in every single race.
if she were a man, she would be called the next up and coming goat. The new senna. The next Schumacher. The star of the next generation. Someone who would get guaranteed a spot in f1.
but because she is a women, she got dropped and sent to gb3. You donât hear people gush about her records or the fact that she is going to lead a next generation into the sport.
