Well, it definitely has nothing to do with "the nuclear family structure" (which is bs, was propagandized hard in the 1950's, and an ever-increasing number of people don't even grow up in one) which I certainly do have ideas about, but I doubt they'd be considered "bizarre" instead of just... averagely dismissive?

To copy from a previous reply: I don’t like cheating in fic because one person’s getting hurt, and the other is displaying a lack of either morality or self-control. I only tolerate it in incest fic because the hotness of the incest is hotter than the discomfort of the cheating. But I still tend to avoid it when there are other options to read.

Have you ever actually talked to anyone in a consensual incestuous relationship? Cuz I have. Quite a few of them, actually. Some relationships of which have been years long, as in over a decade. Some living as married, some with children. (Well okay, the children were imminent, I never talked to any who had children at the time I talked to them, but one woman was pregnant by her brother when I knew her.)

You're equating something that's well-known (incestuous abuse) with something that's actively kept secret in people's real lives (consensual incest). You're saying something is a myth just because you haven't heard about it. It's seen as a "myth" because people's lives are ruined when it comes to light because of the legal and/or social ramifications.

Y'know, I've been debating ever since I got the email notification of this ask on whether or not I was going to reply, because I usually just delete the few pissy asks I get, but this one is actually perfect to prove my point.

But we'll start out with a slight correction: it's a kink, not a fetish.

Now, with that out of the way, here's the thing. The issue with the situation you laid out isn't with the incest. It's with the cheating. There still would have been a problem if your mom cheated with someone other than her brother. The only problem with consensual incest is the social fallout. (Don't come at me about birth defects, we don't stan eugenics in this house.) Social issues surrounding consensual incest/consanguinamory get fixed, then there's nothing wrong with it.

Not saying you're not traumatized by the knowledge that you could have been, and people thought you were, the product of incest. But that wouldn't have been a trauma (aside from possibly due to the cheating) if incest was socially acceptable.
